Business Certificates – an overviewBusiness Certificates were originally introduced in 1993 andfeature three qualifications that provide a progressive wayto develop English ability for international business andthe workplace:If a candidate has not yet entered the job market, C1 BusinessHigher can be used to show universities and colleges that acandidate can: B1 Business Preliminary carry out complex and challenging research. B2 Business Vantage follow any academic business course at university level C1 Business HigherWho recognises the exams?Business Certificates make it easy to prove to employers the exactlevel of a candidate’s English skills and are officially recognised byemployers, universities and governments around the world. Achieving a certificate atthis level proves that the candidate is able to communicate withnative speakers for routine business and workplace purposes.B2 Business Vantage is set at Level B2. A certificateat this level proves that the candidate is becoming skilled inBusiness English.C1 Business Higher is targeted at Level C1 – the second highestlevel on the CEFR scale. Level C1 is required in demandingprofessional settings, and achieving a certificate at this level provesthat a candidate has reached a very advanced level of English.Exceptional candidates sometimes show ability beyond C1 level.If a candidate achieves grade A in the exam, they will receive theBusiness English Certificate Higher stating that they demonstratedability at Level C2.Statement of ResultsThe Statement of Results shows the candidate’s: Score on the Cambridge English Scale for their performancein each of the four language skills (reading, writing, listeningand speaking). Score on the Cambridge English Scale for their overallperformance in the exam. This overall score is the average oftheir scores for the four skills. Grade. Can Do summaryWhat can candidates do at these levels?The Association of Language Testers in Europe (ALTE) has researched what language learners can typically do at each CEFR level. B1 PreliminaryReading and WritingThe seven parts of the Reading paperPART 1 Multiple choiceIn this part, there is an emphasis on understanding short real-worldnotices, messages, etc. Sample task and answer key: pages 12 and 20.Each correct answer in Part 1 receives 1 mark. In this part there are five short texts, each of which isaccompanied by a multiple-choice question containing threeoptions. In all cases the information will be brief and clear, andthe difficulty of the task will not lie in understanding context butin identifying or interpreting meaning.A wide variety of text types, representative of those likely to beencountered in international business, can appear in this part, forexample, emails, advertisements, internet newsflashes.Each text will be complete and have a recognisable context.PART 2 MatchingIn this part, there is an emphasis on reading for detailedcomprehension.
