Moreira (2014)Fire Safety LessonLesson Title: ESL Fire Safety!Context: This lesson is designed for ESL/EFL students at an intermediate level. According tothe partnership with the Fire Safety Dogs, students should be under the age of 11 years. Thelesson, ESL Fire Safety, addresses who are firefighters, plans to keep safe when a fire occurs, andwhat precautions to take in the home for a fire.!Time Frame: Assign homework the night before the lesson presentation. In addition, plan on atwo hour class period to complete this lesson.!Objectives:By the end of this lesson, students will be able to: describe who fire fighters are, what they can do, and what they have. state the three elements that start a fire; “the fire triangle.” give instructions of what to do when clothes catch on fire. plan and execute a fire escape route at home and at school. verbally ask a question on the Skype call about fire safety.!Materials: Internet connection (Skype in the classroom, the Fire Safety Dogs, Fire Facts, Fire SafeKids) Computer need to include or be attached to: Microphone, Speakers, Screen projector orSmart-board Copies of Worksheets!Activities:!Day 1 Homework:Pass out the Fire Safety Packet to students (this will consist of all the worksheets needed for thelesson). Have students work on pages 1-5 for homework; helping them get an idea of what theclass lesson will discus the following session. Students will need a computer at home to playonline games.!Day 2 Class: Review Fire Safety Packet homework and answer questions Describe the 3 elements of a fire; “the fire triangle.” Oxygen, heat, and fuel (wood, paper,etc.) Discuss Fire Safety Vocabulary and Rules Discuss the Fire escape route from the classroom and Plan a Fire escape route for home 30 minute Skype video call with the Fire Safety Dogs (schedule an appointment before) Each student will ask one question!!
