Asam folat dapat diperoleh dari daging, sayuran berwarna hijau, dan susu. Gizi buruk (malnutrisi) merupakan penyebab utamanya. Anemia jenis ini jugaberkaitan dengan pengerutan hati (sirosis). Sirosis hati menyebabkan cadangan asam folat di dalamnya menjadi sedikit sekali. Kekurangan asam folat juga dapat menyebabkan gangguan kepribadian dan hilangnya daya ingat.
