The themes are: Famous Kentuckians, Kentucky Trivia, World Equestrian Games, KentuckySymbols, Kentucky Caves, Derby Festival Hot Air Balloon Race, Kentucky Derby, Kentucky statebird, and Kentucky State Parks. The teachers decorated using pictures, construction paper, maps, fake plastic animals, and bulletin board paper. The students are enjoying learning about Kentuckyand had a very good new year of school. –Makenzie Lucas1

New ESL AssistantNew 3rd Grade AssistantMrs. Lydia Cain is a high school graduate fromChile, South America. She attended AshlandBusiness College. She has worked at PoageHead Start program, Hatcher Elementary, andnow Charles Russell. Mrs. Cain comes from alarge family of nine brothers and sisters, allwho live in Chile. –Zach GreeneMrs. Sharla Johnson is a nice lady whose son,Carson, is in second grade in Mrs. King’sclass. She used to teach at Verity MiddleSchool and taught 7th grade reading. Nowshe’s a teacher’s assistant for 3rd grade. Shewent to Morehead State University and has herteaching degree. Everyone was nice to her,and she lives close to Charles Russell. –JakeDamronStarry NightNew Resource TeacherCharles Russell has a new resource teacher,Mr. Tim Rice. He has an undergraduatedegree from the University of Washington inSeattle and has a master’s from Marshall. Heis currently working on a master’s fromUniversity of the Cumberlands. He spent fouryears substituting in the Ashland SchoolDistrict. He also spent two years at PacNow.He is currently teaching at CRS, Crabbe, andVerity. He also teaches baseball at KCDiamond. He is married to his wife, Hillary, and he has a daughter, Addison that is almostfour. He has a dog named Rico. So now youknow Mrs. Rice. The 4th graders made a picture of “StarryNight” painted by Vincent Van Gogh onSeptember 3 at CRS with Mrs. Foudray, artteacher. How they made it was on pack paper, with crayons, and glitter. Van Gogh’s originalpainting inspired them. They made them in Mr.Manning and Miss Hood’s classrooms. Thirdgrade students also made the pictures. Theydid a good job. I was glad I got to see thisproject because it was my first interview. Didyou know that Van Gogh only sold one paintingin his lifetime? It looked like the students had agreat time doing this project. The pictures arehanging in the hall for others to see. -CarrinaHensley2

Ms. Rowlett’s Exercise TimeCell ProjectMs. Rowlett and her third grade class gooutside for exercise every day. The studentseach get their own mat to go and do exercisessuch as scissor kicks, push-ups and runningaround a tree and back. Ms. Rowlett does theexercises with the kids. The reason she doesthis is to help the students get fit. The classdoes the exercises in the morning if it can fit inthe schedule. When the kids go home they geton the computers or watch TV and they onlyget twenty minutes of recess a day. So Ms.Rowlett decided to have an exercise time withher class. –Chloe VanHornOn September 9, in Mrs. Hall’s science classesin 6th grade, the students made a cell projectout of food. They did it so they could learnabout cells and how they work and what theydo for the body. They did it by taking snackslike Jello, nerds, and so on, to make a deliciousanimal or plant cell. –Cody BlevinsApples, Apples, ApplesCarnation ExperimentBoth 4th grade classes did an experiment withcarnations this year in Miss Hood’s scienceclass. The supplies used were cups, dye, water, and white carnations. The colors of thedye that were chosen were: red, yellow, blueor green. First they cut the leaves off theflowers. Next the students got to pick theirflower and the color of dye that they wanted. Then they put water and a few drops of dye ina small cup. Last they put the flower in the cupwith the water and dye. After about two daysthe carnations turned the color the studentschose. They did this to learn how water andnutrients travel through the stem up to theflower. –Maddy GreeneIn Kindergarten, Mrs. Geyer’s class driedapples. They did this by cranking apples on awheel so they were cut into slices and were incircles. Then they dipped them in water andhoney. After that they let them dry in a heatbox for 18 hours. The kids loved the driedapples; they were really good. In Mrs.Bonner’s class the kids cut apples in half sothat they could see the star inside the apples. Then they made a chart and the kids wrotedown their favorite color of apple between red, green, or yellow. That is how the Kindergartendid Apple projects. –Abby Crites3

Blow and DrawJohnny AppleseedOn September 27, Mrs. Janice Ledford cameto Mr. Manning and Mrs. Blankenship’s roomsto teach about John Chapman, better knownas Johnny Appleseed. She taught the 4thgraders how to write a cinquain poem and theywrote about different kinds of apples. Themost popular apple to write about was the reddelicious and second was the Granny Smithapple. The first grade made a JohnnyAppleseed face from a paper plate. Theclasses got to taste different apple productslike: apple chips, apple butter, apple jelly, andone last thing was an apple muffin. They didworksheets on where Johnny Appleseedtraveled. They did these activities because itwas Johnny Appleseed’s birthday onSeptember 26. That was pretty much whatthey did, plus it looked like they had a lot offun.Eight students from 5th grade learned how toblow and draw on the harmonica. Mrs.Reinhard wanted some of the 5th graders tolearn how to play the harmonica. We’re havingharmonica class every Friday at 1 to 1:30 pm.The students love to play the harmonica. Some students were laughing but some gotnervous. Blow and draw means to makedifferent notes, for example: blow makes itlower and draw means it goes higher.Students in the class are: Baylei Park,Madelyn Hamilton, Austin Smith, TylerWilliams, Carrina Hensley, Andrea Donalson, and Bentley Meade. I hope we’re going tolearn a lot more about playing the harmonica.–Carrina HensleyViolin Class-Nick EndicottPinwheelsFriday, September 24, Mrs. Susan Boyerstarted going to each school teaching violinlessons. Only six or so students are chosen.CRS students are: Casey Walter, Sami Taylor,Elijah Keaton, Aryn Hughes, Riley Gransbery,Amy Moore, and Bryan Lucas. Mrs. Boyer isteaching a song called “Kaleidoscope” byWilliam Ho. Mrs. Boyer is letting them practicewith the Verity orchestra this spring and theycan’t wait! -Amy Moore & Casey WalterOn September 30, the first graders werestudying about wind. So they made pinwheels, and they took them outside to let the kids seehow the wind makes the pinwheel spin. I thinkall of the kids had fun, but also learned manynew things about the wind. –Cassandra Holbrook4

SunflowersFire Prevention MonthOn September 30, the 6th grade students madea still life of sunflowers. We used beans tomake the seeds, then strips of paper to makethe petals. Next we used green paper and aforeshadowing to make the stems and pots. After they were made it was actually a prettyfun art project. It helped us all learn moreabout Vincent Van Gogh as he had a famouspainting called “Sunflowers.” -Cassandra HolbrookOn Monday, October 4, in the morning, bothkindergarten classes went to the fire station fora tour. Then later that day, Miss Goble broughtin her two Dalmatians. She brought them in toteach the students about different kinds ofDalmatians and how they can help people. She brought them to school with a bag of icecubes to give to the dogs whenever they did atrick right. Then they talked about who was themost famous person who had a Dalmatian itwas George Washington. Next she broughtcoloring sheets. They could color the dog withbrown spots, which was like Lexie or withblack, which was Emme. Then they talkedabout why they had Dalmatians long ago. Itwas because if a snake or mouse would comeand scare the horse, it would make the horseflip the people back. When the dogs sawthem, they would scare them away. Did youknow there are two kinds of Dalmatians? Well, now you do. A Dalmatian with brown spots iscalled liver. Miss Goble then let the dogs goaround the classroom so the kids could petthem. Then both classes got a picture with thedogs. All the kids had a great time. During themonth of October the students will be doingworksheets about fire safety: stop, drop androll; feel the back of the door with the front ofyour hand; and stay low and go. They aredoing this because October is Fire PreventionMonth. –Makenzie LucasRED RIBBON WEEKOCTOBER 25 – 28, 2010The staff and students of Charles RussellElementary will be celebrating Red RibbonWeek! The primary classes havemet some wonderful new friends: Tuggles theteddy bear, Carmen the Cool Cat, and Wagnerthe dog. These critters are learning some veryimportant lessons right along with us. Inkindergarten we have talked about makinghealthy choices and how those choices affectour bodies. In first grade we have talked aboutmaking healthy choices, our feelings and howto use “I feel messages” to let others know howwe are feeling, as well as how importantlistening is. Second graders have been talkingabout how to make our dreams come true, andhow important it is to stop and think before weact. Third graders met a really cool robot friendnamed Auto. Through many comparisons toAuto we learned how our bodies aremagnificent machines as well but are muchdifferent then Auto’s “body.” We can have anawesome future if we set goals and make goodchoices. Forth and fifth graders have beenworking diligently on the steps to settingreasonable goals and how to work toaccomplish them.
