Year 4 NewsletterTerm 2 2020A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPALWelcome back to school everyone. Whether yourchildren are in classrooms at school or learning fromhome, you are an important and valued part of ourlearning community. We will work hard tocommunicate effectively with you and provide the bestlearning experience for your child.All classes will be using Class Dojo as a medium forcommunicating with learners and their parents thisterm. It can be accessed from your phone, computer,ipad or laptop and is easy to use. Please make sureyou have connected with each child’s teacher. Theysent you an invitation to join Dojo before the holidays.Ring us if you need help to join.Students will not need access to a laptop or iPad allday in order to do their learning but if they have adevice, they could use it to watch the videos andcommunicate with their teacher via Class DoJo insteadof using your phone. Learning activities set, can bedone in a book or on worksheets provided. Childrenwill need to send finished work back to their teacher.This can be scanned on your phone or you can take aphoto of it with a phone or iPad and then the photo/scan can be easily uploaded to Class DoJo.Lastly, teachers will call to check in on how thechildren are going. The call may come from a privatenumber. You can of course ring or email the school ifyou have a question.CHILDREN AT SCHOOL:Children at school will be in their own class roomsdoing their normal learning programs.CHILDREN LEARNING AT HOME:All children who are not attending school need tointeract with the learning we have prepared each day.If they are sick and won’t be joining in for the day,please message the class teacher on Class Dojo orcall the office to let us know. We have to keep a dailyroll for children at home as well as those at school.Teachers will work in year level teams to make surethey can provide a great learning program for thestudents in class and those at home.For children at home, teachers will upload two shortinstructional videos each day. One will be for Englishand one for Maths. Teachers will also be available atsome time between 8:00am and 4:00pm (on schooldays) to answer questions and to check work. This willbe done through Class DoJo. Students will be setsome compulsory learning tasks each day and alsosome extra optional activities. Parents will need tohelp set a daily routine, show your child/ren the videoson Class DoJo each day and help to support/supervise the learning. Specialist teachers will uploadone video a week.We have a rigid cleaning schedule happening atschool – cleaners are in twice a day and classteachers have initiated many regular hygienepractices. We encourage students to socially distanceas much as possible.We have adjusted our “at school” structures inresponse to the large number of students who areattending this week.The most important thing is that we are all safeand healthy. Welcome back to Term 2!Dear Parents/Caregivers,Welcome to Term 2! We hope you have all had alovely break, staying safe and enjoying family timetogether. Term 2 is looking a little different, but wewant you to know, we are here to help you withwhatever decision you choose to make for your family.Room 27, 28 and 29 are all working together toensure we continue to have quality lessons plannedand delivered to students at school. These lessonswill be filmed daily and uploaded on ClassDojo thefollowing morning, for the students who are at home.Please note: Daily English and Mathematicsvideos will be of either Ms Amber, Miss Cobb or MissPhillips - ALL Year 4’s must watch and complete allEnglish and Mathematics lessons regardless of whatteacher is in the video. We have planned all lessonstogether.It is expected that students staying at home completeat least 2 hours of school work each day. The Englishand Mathematics lessons are a priority, along withyour child’s reading. Students at home are expectedto complete these lessons each day and upload aphoto of their work on their portfolio on ClassDojo fortheir classroom teacher to mark and give feedback on.Students can then choose to complete activities fromSpecialist teachers on ClassDojo or the matrix andother learning activities that are in the home packsthat are posted fortnightly. The first pack should arrivein the mail early in Week 2.Please ask questions on ClassDojo if you are unsure.Your classroom teacher will respond as soon as theycan - Please be patient as we now have high numbersof students returned to school, so we are back toteaching our normal daily lessons in the classroom.We hope to see all our students back at school, whenyour family is ready. This will be explored through numeracygames, mental routines, problem solving activitiesand flash cards.In addition to this, our key skill lessons will cover arange of different content areas from the number andgeometry strand, including: addition and subtraction location and transformation 2D and 3D shape multiplication divisionEnglishThe types of texts we will be covering this term are: information reports procedure writingStudents will write an information report assessmentpiece this term which will be assessed and scoredusing the Brightpath scale. JollyGrammar teaches a wide range of language formsincluding the parts of speech, punctuation and thetenses past, present, and future. It also teaches awide range of spelling rules, including definingaspects such as the short vowels.Library Borrowing Days:Room 27: WednesdaysRoom 28: WednesdaysRoom 29: FridaysScienceThis term we will be focusing on the inquiry question:How do natural processes and human actions changethe Earth’s surface over time?In this unit, students will investigate how and whynatural processes and human actions change theEarth’s surface over time. They will identify evidenceof change through exploring rocks and fossils andinvestigate how erosionis caused by humanactivity. Students s into theformations of landformsand weathering.

Humanities and Social ScienceThis term in HASS we will be learning about the FirstFleet and the British Colonisation of Australia.Students will be investigating life in Britain during thelate 1700s and learn about the events that took placewhen the First Fleet arrived in Australia. We will bediscussing what life would have been like as a convictand will be identifying the impact a British colony hadon the Indigenous people of Australia.Learning MatrixEach fortnight, students will receive a learning fromhome matrix. This matrix will be filled with a variety ofdifferent learning activities covering a range of differentsubject areas. Students working from home, shouldchoose at least 1 activity to complete per day after theyhave completed the online English and Mathematicslesson that is uploaded on ClassDojo. New matrix willbe posted out and uploaded to ClassDojo fortnightly.Specialist subjectsThis term we will have Music and Drama, Auslanand Health and PE as specialist subjects.Music and Drama with Georgia YatesThis term in music, students will begin exploringimprovisation, and in particular, question andanswer. They will do this through bodypercussion, using instruments and through danceand movement. Students will also begin readingthe treble clef.In drama, students will continue their unit onmime and facial expression. They will begin usingtheir voices. Students will experiment with thevolume, speed and projection of their voice usingReader’s Theatre, poetry and fairy tales.Please ensure you are regularly checking yourClass Dojo for updates about Music and Drama.Content for home learning will be uploaded onThursday each week.Auslan with Christine KrohnTo help make learning consistent across the yearlevels and methods (at home or at school) thisterm we are all learning about animals. We will beadding a lesson each week based on animals;this might be a presentation, or a finger spellingtest. Maybe students can teach their parentssome Auslan signs this term?We will be adding our song ‘Dance Monkey’ to allclasses Dojo’s for the online learners and we willpractise this song in class. Whenever studentshave some spare time, they could practise theirsigns for this song. We are hoping that wheneverything returns to normal, we can all sign thesong together at assembly. Sorry to all theparents who will end up with this song stuck intheir heads all day, it is quite catchy.Health and PE with Matthew CuconitsAfter an extremely successful start to the year, Iam excited to introduce new topics that will allowstudents to develop new skills. In Term 2 studentswill learn about nutrition and the importance ofhealthy eating. Students will also learn about thebenefits that physical activity has on your overallhealth.The Term 2 Physical Education componentinvolves the following:European Handball - Students will learn anumber of skills including; dribbling, passing,shooting, defending and goalkeeping.Soccer – The following skills will be practised anddeveloped over a 5 week unit; passing, dribbling,shooting, defending and game play.As for students who are learning from home,online learning activities and videos withinstructions will be posted on class dojo eachweek on Monday morning. These activities willrequire very little equipment and can be done in aspace at home.

Within the applicationthere are mini tasks for students tocomplete so they understand the mainfeatures within the program. This applicationhelps to teach the skills required to become anengineer and a designer. This program will beused at school this term during the STEMspecialist subject with Ms Ostrun.Typing TournamentTyping Tournament is a websitethat students can access thatincreases their fluency andaccuracy in typing words andsentences on a keyboard.Students have an account that they can use atschool and home.
