It is also one of thelargest universitiesinSouthIndia.There are culrently 35 teaching departments, 432afliliated colleges, l1 Academic Chairs and 38 self-financing centres under the university.Besides the main campus located at Thenhipalam village in Malappuram district, there aretwo other campuses at Thrissur and Vatakara. With more than quarter of a million studentsregisteredfor various graduate andpostgraduate programmes, the university's studentpopulation parallels the figures of the largest institutions in the world. It has produced2532phDs and more than one million degree holders. The University caters to the educationalrequirements of the Malabar region, consisting of some of the most backward districts of theState. The courses offered by the University are specially tailored to suit the ethos andrequirements of the region.With an'A'Grade by NAAC, the Universityof Calicut has made its distinctive mark inhigher education in the country. It is the third most searched university in the world accordingto Google records. An uncompromising commitment to academic excellence and a foolproof examination system have been crucial in maintaining the university's high academicstandards. In order to keep the syllabi up to date and address the needs of the rapidlychanging job scenario, the university periodically reviews the structure and content of thecourses. This is taken care ofby126 Boardsof Studies functioning under 14 Faculties. The University of Calicut is thefirst university in the state to introduce a regime for weeding out plagiarism inAnti-plagiarism software in use is constantly monitored and reviewedresearch.The Universtf of Calicut reached l14th position in the recently announced QS-BRICSRankings 2018. Among Indian Universities, University of Calicut bagged the 6th position .The examination system has been streamlined and fool-proof mechanisms are now in placefor the efficient conduct of the exams and prompt publication of results. The introduction ofonline verification system has facilitated rapid verificationofmarks and certificates,benefitting a large number of graduates and employers. In 2016, the university won the EGovemance Award for the successful implementationof ICT in administration, finance,examination and research. The University of Calicut is the frst university in the State toimplement the Digital Document Filing System (DDFS) successfully. The DDFS hasfacilitated quick processing of files, faster decision making, real time tracking and statusverification. Using this fucility employees and administrators can also work from homes andoff-campus locations.After becoming fully Wi-Fi-enabled, the University has succeeded in extending ICT to theprocess of learning in a largeway.The University subscribes to more than 4000 e-journalswhich can be accessed by the faculty and the students online from both within the campusand outside. Many departments have brought in social media platforms for communicationand discussion in their leaming systems. The concept of the virtual classroomwill become areality when the current efforts to setup video conferencing links between the faculty andleamers of each department and between departments reach their successful culmination.The University's achievements in sports and games have been remarkable. Right from itsinception, the University of Calicut has become all-India champions several times in inter-zone toumamentsachievementsingames like football, volleyball and basketball. The University'sin athletics is probably unmatched by any other university in India.Thelegendary Olympians P T Usha and Anju Bobby George are alumni of the University. The students and the faculty also have an active presence in the social media.The Educational Multimedia Research functioning on the campus is the only one in the State.It has contributed immensely to the cause of higher education in the region by producingaudio-visual material in a variety of subjects. The production of audio course materiallaunched by the EMMRC is moving at a tremendous pace and dozens of texts have alreadybeen produced. The technical personnel who are at the helm of material production at theEMMRC have won several awards and distinctions at the national levelThe University's green initiatives include the One Person One Tree project which is expectedto provide complete green cover to the University in a short time. The University hasIntroduced Green Audit, Green Campus Award, Swatch Campus Award and Green Fest inorder to foster Environment Consciousness. Rain-harvesting projects have been undertakenextensively. A massive solar energy project for providing power to the entire campus roundthe clock is under consideration.The University has also become a tourist destination over the last few years. It maintains abotanical garden, considered to be the best in the state, visited by thousands of people ayear.It now covers an areaof 19.5 hectares and boasts of over 5000 specimens. Efforts to diversifuthe botanical garden have been launched. The university herbarium (CALI) isaninternationally recognized reference centre for plant specimens. The sprawling landscapedpark is alsoagreat attraction for visitors. The buildings on the campus are artisticallyconstructed and are a pleasure to the eyesThe University has set up a Community Disability Management and Rehabilitation Program(CDMRP)toprovide free advanced disability management servicedevelopmental impairments. The program also makes provisionfortostudents withresearch throughcollaboration with various national and international institutions working in the area ofdisability management. As an institution that cares for the needs of differently-abled studentsand populace, a DAISY Audio Book system for visually challenged has been set up in thelibrary. The Schoolof Distance Education,formerly known as the 'Institute of Correspondence Courses and Continuing Education',University of Calicut, started functioning in the Academic year 1981-82. Now it is one of themajor Departments of the university and has also emerged as one of the major distanceeducation providers. Details of the Proposed M A Programme in ArabicThe proposed Post Graduate Program in Arabic Language and Literature under semestersystem is designed with a view to imparting to the students an advanced knowledge in ArabicLanguage& Literature. As different from the traditional M A Arabic course, this programmewhile retaining the classical background and essential classical contents, lays great emphasison the teaching of and the practical training in the functional use of Arabic as a modernlanguage. The practical aspectslivingof the Arabic Language as translation (both theoryandpractice), simultaneous interpretation, modem terminology and applied grammar are givendue importance in the syllabi. As for the literature, its modern branches i.e. Novel, ShortStory, Drama, Poetry and Modern Essays have been given adequate representation. ln orderto acquaint the students with the fundamentals of Computer application with Arabic softwarehas also been included in the syllabi. Thus, the programme has been so designed as to servenot only as s scholastic and literary course, but also as modern and practically orientedcourse, in a comprehensive way.3.1 Mission and Objectives of M A Programme in ArabicTraining in the Arabic language offered by the School of Distance Education enables one, atthe end of the training, to become a translator, an interpreter, a teachei or an interculturalconsultant. In an era of globalisation a person trained in a foreign language is always indemand. The course aims at developing competence and proficiencyin spoken as wellaswritten language through the use of language laboratory, audio-visual means etc. Parallel tothis the courses in civilization and culture give a total overview of the history, geography andcultural institutions of the country concemed. A survey of the particular country's intellectualhistory is woven into the fabric of the course to give the students a proper understanding ofthe relationship between society and its art and thought.Literature is studied as a specific discipline in itself and students are trained in variousmethods of literary analysis.The M.A. programme has been designed to provide advanced and intensive training ofArabic Language, Literature, Culture and Civilisation through courses such as translationArabic-English-Arabic, simultaneous interpretation together with course contents suchclassical prose and poetry, modern prose and PoetIY, historyof AtabicaslangUage andliterature, Arabic novels and plays, prepare students for research and interpretation.Programme Project Report-MA in Arabic, SDE

At the end of the programme, the students will be familiar with the history, developmentand critical assessment of the range of themes and styles in the various genres of classicalArabic prose and poetry literature. They will have gained a critical understanding of anumber of texts selected from classical Arabic prose genres, such as maqama, hikaya, khabar,risala and drama, and an ability to comment on the literary (language, style and narrative) andsocial (function and cultural and identity politics) dimensions inherent in these texts. Anof the workings of the Arabic literary language will have beenacquired. Particular.attention will be given to notions of "literariness" and the cultural andadvanced understandingpolitical role of literature.in the Arabic context. Students will also gain familiarity withclassical Arabic literary theory and criticism.The studentswill be familiar with the range of themes and genres to be found in medievaland contemporary Arabic literature andliterary theory and themes. Theywillwill have developed a grasp of relevanthave acquired a detailed knowledgeissues inof a selectednumber of texts comprising both poetry and narrative prose, and will be able to comment onthe performance setting and social function of the works in question.Particular attention is given to the interface between popdlar and canonical literature, and thestudentwill be expected to situate selected popular texts in relation to prior or subsequentcanonical counterparts.3.3 Duration of the FrogrammeFour semesters spre4d over two years.3.4 Faculty and Support StaffRequirementThere is one faculty in the rank of Assistant Professor) for MA Programe in Arabic Languageand Literature on Contract basis. There is sufficient staff support from the SDE office forprocessing administrative work. The service of qualified resource persons and subject expertsfrom various govemment and aided colleges are utilized after they axe approved by the vicechancellor in the preparation of SLM, coordinating and taking contact classes and conductinginternal evaluation.3.5 Programme DeliveryThe programme is being delivered with the help of SLM and contact classes. students through the contact class centers. The soft copiesof the study materials willbeavailable in the website (www.sdeuoc.ac.in Student Zone Study Materials). The use ofweb-based tools is not in place yet, but steps are being initiated. The study materialsbe provided in printed formif the total enrollment forwill nota programme is less than 50 students.3.6 Instructional Delivery MechanismsApart from providing Self Learning Material, the students of SDE will be offered contactclasses at various contact class centers. The details regarding the contact class centers aregiven in the website of the SDE from time to time.Astudent can choose Contact ClassCentre at the time of Online Registration. The ailotment of contact class centreson the number of students enrolled for each programme.willdependIf sufficient number of candidatesisnot enrolled for a programme, the nearest contact class centre will be allotted. The time tableof contact classes will be sent to the students well in advance. The classes will handled byteachers of the SDE, teachers of the colleges affiliated to the Universities in Kerala and byexperts in the concerned field.3.7 Procedure for Admissions, Curriculum Transaction and EvaluationThe admission notifications forMA Programme in Arabic, among othersare being issued inleading national and regional dailies during the month of June-July.
