THE SUP VETERANSGIVING BACK & REKINDLING CAMARADERIE THROUGHTHE HEALING BENEFITS OF OCEAN SURFBy Evelyn O’DohertyHow do you conquer fear? “Youacquire the technique and skill setto put yourself in that situation andknow how to manage it confidently.” Ian CairnsNo one understands this mindsetand action mentality better thanthe military. Putting oneself in thepath of danger, taking calculatedrisks and sometimes bigger ones,is part of the acquisition of skillsthat allow military men & womento do their jobs every day.The comment above was made atthe dinner table by Ian “Kanga” Cairns30STANDUP JOURNALwhile overlooking a mind-blowingsunset at the luxury Grand PalladiumVallarta Resort and Spa in Punta deMita, Mexico. There we were, twelveof us in total. Together, we weredeveloping a bond of trust, humilityand shared experiences with GreenBerets, Naval Aviators, Army Rangersand Navy SEALS as part of the firstSUP Veteran’s Stand Up Paddle SurfRetreat, piloted by GenRation (GR).I was privileged to be there as aparticipant and journalist, eager to talkto these warriors about their militaryexperiences in foreign lands, covertoperations, and the challenges of reentry into civilian life upon discharge.THE SUP VETERANS POWEREDBY GENRATION (GR): TOP LEVELPERFORMANCE & STOKEThe SUP Vets is a newly hatchednon-profit launched by James“Bart” Bartelloni, a “Top Gun” NavalAviator, Wesley “Wes” Spence, aformer Navy SEAL with three toursin Afghanistan and Richard “Whit”Wittington, an Army InfantryOfficer with two tours in Iraq. Theirmission is to bring together groups ofUnited States active duty or retiredmilitary members for a one-of-a-kindexperience to learn how SUP Surf. The coaching staff and backgroundstructure of our SUP Veteran’sRetreat was custom tailored byGenRation (GR), a wickedly skilledteam of talent that provides high levelpaddle, surf and wellness experiencesfor water enthusiasts who want totake their performance to the nextlevel. GenRation’s co-founders LorenSaxby and 2018 SUP Surfing WorldChampion Sean Poynter were bothon site in Mexico to spearhead ourretreat. Also present and part ofGenRation’s professional coachingstaff were Sunset surf legend IanCairns, world class athlete andentertainer Daniel Hughes andMexico’s own star talent of FelipeHernandez. It’s worth noting that GenRationprovides multiple dynamic services.GenRation Xperiences (GRX),like this one, offer luxury-stylewellness retreats with high qualitycoaching. The brand also showcasessophistication and practical knowledgethrough their development of a newline of high performance SUPs.These boards, designed by legendaryshaper Bert Burger (original innovatorbehind Firewire Surfboards andcreator of Sunova Surfboards),alongside GenRation’s co-founderSean Poynter, are manufactured bySunova. Made from balsa wood, theboards are lightweight and designedfor high performance with step uprails, pulled in tails and a shallow profilefor speed. GenRation supplied 12 ofthese new surf SUPs to the retreat forparticipants. There was the Wedge, the Kanga and SP25 to choose from,A WATER LOVER’S MAGAZINE31

THE SUP VETERANS“I caught my first wave back in San Diego right before I attended my first retreat that literally broughtme back. As a Naval Aviator, flying in F-14’s, we were catapulted daily off the aircraft carrier. Thereis a split second after you give the thumbs up, an instant before the catapult shot, when you haveto decide whether you will live or die that day. When that “cat” lets you loose, your stomach drops, your head is pinned back by G-Force and your life is on the line. One of the waves I caught that dayput me in that moment where I had to choose and the drop in my stomach as I bottom turnedand fired down the line reminded me of those days. It's as wild as flying off aircraft carriers!”Camaraderie, an essential component to aveteran’s service, is reinvigorated through skillbuilding, laughter and learning on The SUPVeteran’s Retreat.- JAMES “BART” BARTELLONIAlam Garciadepending on one’s skill level. Each boardcame in varying sizes and volume in orderto properly match every rider’s ability. Thiswas clearly an exclusive opportunity to learnfrom the best on high level equipment. This 5-day ‘Active Duty and Militarymembers only’ retreat consists of 6 hoursdaily in the water, multiple private and smallgroup coaching moments from the all-starinstructors including daily video reviewsessions where each participant’s stance, power and technique from the morning’swaves are analyzed in slow motion overrich coffee and home-made biscuits. Every32STANDUP JOURNALaspect of it was highly structured, wellorganized and detailed. The collaborationbetween Grand Palladium Vallarta, SUPVets and GenRation was complete downto every meal, specialty drinks, snacks, daily room and pool-side service as well asavailable spa services and a jacuzzi tub inevery room. In short, a supreme experience, surrounded by elite men of the US militaryin a luxurious setting made for a memorableencounter.“I caught my first wave back in San Diegoright before I attended my first retreatthat literally brought me back. Thatfirst night’s dinner provided by the GrandPalladium Vallarta consisted of a privatedining experience on a raised platform justabove the waterline where chefs grilledsteaks, shrimp, and freshly caught fish toperfection, while coaches, coordinators andguests drank cervezas while watching thesun drop down over a vast expanse of ocean.Dinner was a lively affair. Afterintroductions were made, jokes and storieswere told in a large family-style settingthat would become a staple part of everymeal on the SUP Veteran’s Retreat. Inthe military, service men and womendevelop tight, long lasting bonds with fellowcomrades-at-arms in close quarters andoften under extreme conditions. Uponreturning home, a difficult part of thereadjustment process is not having thesetight friendships to count on in a veteran’sdaily life.“I found the family style meals forbreakfast, lunch, and dinner to bebeneficial. I felt like we were family! Therewas an opportunity to sit next to others atevery meal and learn about them. Whata super group of people all different butwith one core.” - Pete HendersonThe SUP Veteran’s retreat offers a oneof-a-kind experience to military personnelA WATER LOVER’S MAGAZINE33

Bartelloni’svision also includes introducing the healingbenefits of the ocean to allow vets torelearn how to relax, enjoy each other’scompany and return home with a skill thatkeeps them motivated to stay connected34STANDUP JOURNALto the ocean. Every aspect of this retreatunderscores this common thread.“SUP Vets was a great opportunity toreconnect with brothers from a differentmother – and to personally get back on thewater after years of absence – remindingme once again how truly amazing the oceanexperience remains.” - John Clagett a.k.a.“Rooster”DAY 1: THE AGENDABreakfast is served daily at 7AM in anoutdoor dining room overlooking the water.Twelve to eighteen people for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day, depending onwhat guests, cameramen, or hotel staffdecided to join us. Coffee, croissants, omelets, fresh juices, granola and fruitfortified the group for the day’s openingSUP Surf Progression Session with coachesCairns, Poynter, Hughes and Fernandez. After our meal, the group was split up.Half the vets who had surfed before weretaken out on the water and the other halfwere ‘in the pool’ with Ian Cairns to learnpaddle stroke technique, foot stance andturns. Those of us who escaped the legendof Ian Cairns’ scrutiny that first day feltlucky to get out on the water to catch a fewwaves. After Coach Cairns’ session in the ‘pool’,everybody joined up at Bahia Royale, aworld class point break right outside of theGrand Palladium Vallarta Resort, to catch afew waves. Between Kanga, Sean Poynter,Daniel Hughes and Feilipe Hernandez, there were eyes on everybody’s surfing.Plus, onshore was cameraman, DanielSpencer of EvoLove Media, recording oursession for the afternoon video analysis.I learned so much in that first session myhead almost exploded. Poynter immediatelychanged my take-off position on each wave, showing me how to line up properly toget into the wave earlier and create morespace & momentum for my first maneuver. That changed everything. It wasn’t just aboutthe expert advice given by the SUP Pros; itwas the building of camaraderie during thesessions. We learned, we cheered, we laughedand, most of all, we inched closer together.”- KEVIN HENDERSONwas paddling across the lineup to take offfrom behind the peak, position myself inthe power pocket of the wave and set updown the line. Speed, power and flow arethe key points of interest and our sessionsimmediately got down to business. At 11:30AM, we were called in for abreak. Onshore the hotel had set up acart in the shade specifically for our groupwith refreshments, fruit infused water orgatorade and fresh bananas and apples toboost our electrolytes after having beenin the hot morning sun. We were given anhour and a half to rest, eat lunch (all 18of us) and meet in the video room for ourfirst video analysis session. These morningsessions were long, the coaches consistent, encouraging and full of quick tips and pointsof reference to make the session successful.36STANDUP JOURNALEvery day, I would climb out of the waterafter 3 hours, exhausted and elated, butnot sure how I was going to show up for theafternoon session. But then, the video analysis brought onthe stoke. At 1PM, we met in a private room inGrand Palladium Vallarta’s vast networkof spaces, with a large screen andvideo monitor, freshly ground coffeeand homemade pastries to settle intocomfortable chairs and spend a few hoursreviewing our morning waves.Ian Cairns led these coaching sessions, while Poynter, Hughes and Fernandezadded their perspectives and personaltips for additional coverage. This wasreally happening. Surf legend Ian Cairns,World Champ Sean Poynter, top dogDaniel Hughes and local legend FelipeHernandez came together to analyze everywave videotaped by Daniel that morning, offering retreat participants blow-by-blowcommentary on foot stance, take off, bodyposition, and the execution of maneuvers.Mind-blowing! Each participant wasreviewed on two waves chosen by Daniel tobe included in the session. Cairns led thediscussion as Poynter rewound the videoagain & again, to make the teaching pointsknown. As a top tier coaching staff, thisrepresentation of some of the greatesttalent in SUP and surf is formidable. Theirfocus is direct, their comments oftenmulti-layered around a main point, andtheir skill level as coaches exemplary. These video sessions rapidly became a highpoint of each day as we learned from eachother’s successes and failures, applaudedevery effort and experienced the thrillof professional coaching in an exclusivesetting. Plus, the coffee was damn good.“The video review sessions stand out forme with this amazing program. It wasn’t justabout the expert advice given by the SUPPros; it was the building of camaraderieduring the sessions. We learned, wecheered, we laughed and, most of all, weinched closer together.” - Kevin HendersonDaily, the video sessions would invigoratethe group. Morning fatigue forgotten, at3PM when the review was over, we wouldgrab our boards and head out to BahiaRoyale to cement this new learning intomuscle memory and mindset. Each reviewwas revelatory. Every wave discussed madeus sit up and pay attention. This experiencewas too good to miss. Total stoke.Afternoons at Bahia Royale were full ofbrotherhood. A shared learning experiencein the morning brought this band of Armyand Navy veterans together in a way thatmere socializing never could. Hoots andcatcalls in the lineup were a prerequisite.Long conversations drifting on the boardsin between sets cemented friendships.Laughter was abundant and the oceanprovided. By the time we dragged ourselvesout of the water at 5:30 or 6:00PM,sunburnt, arms heavy, full of good sunshineand surf, the day was already maxed out. There was time to shower before dinner, grab a beer or two poolside and thengather under the thatched cane roof at ourtable set for eighteen again - give or takedepending on who was staying for dinner to break bread and share another meal.CREATING DEEPER CONNECTIONS:THE SUP VETS BUILD RELATIONSHIPSIt was at dinner that I began to get toknow the men. When asked to join theretreat as a participant and journalist, I hadno idea what to expect. What unfoldedduring our daily conversations, whetheron a board or in the dining hall, shifted myperspective regarding the military forever.Seated next to me were multiple careerNavy SEALS, Top Gun Naval Aviatorsincluding Bart who flew an F-14 for 11 yearsand Rooster, whose career as a Hornetpilot made him one of the most decoratedaviators in the Gulf War. Kevin, a GreenBeret commander, educated me on howA WATER LOVER’S MAGAZINE37

THE SUP VETERANSEvery one of these men had experienced things outside the realm ofmy limited understanding. They had witnessed the direct effects ofwarfare both personally and in individuals close to them. They eachhad a driving ambition to serve, and many, in their post-combat livesare still serving their country through military training, consultantwork or coaching others. They are serious, sometimes intense, but also the most honorable and compassionate individuals I havemet in a long time. Compassion and a need to serve is what drivesthem forward. I felt incredibly fortunate to be at that table.Mission complete: Friendships forged through fun and sharedstoke are the heartbeat of The SUP Veteran’s experienceAlam Garciathe Green Berets function. A SEALcommander talked about heading a nonprofit for veterans suffering from PTSDand the realities behind a combat veteran’sreturn to daily life. Not your averagenightly conversation! That first night Ilistened to Kanga Cairns swap stories with aSEAL about putting themselves in positionsof danger (Kanga in big waves, the SEALat war) and how that changes a person’s38STANDUP JOURNALperspective. I began to understand thesewere no ordinary men. What Bart had amassed here on theocean in Punta de Mita was a group of highranking military veterans, many of whomwere still serving their country in one formor another. Every one of these men hadexperienced things outside the realm of mylimited understanding. They had witnessedthe direct effects of warfare both personallyand in individuals close to them. They eachhad a driving ambition to serve, and many,in their post-combat lives are still servingtheir country through military training, consultant work or coaching others. Theyare serious, sometimes intense, but alsothe most honorable and compassionateindividuals I have met in a long time.Compassion and a need to serve is whatdrives them forward. I felt incrediblyfortunate to be at that table. The SUP Veterans retreat format putgreat emphasis on developing commonbonds. We ate together, learned skillstogether, relaxed together. In addition, wewere offered group experiences outsideof SUP Surfing in order to solidify ourconnection. This is where I felt the SUPVets retreat transcended all expectationsand achieved its purpose of forgingconnection.MEDITATION: SOUND HEALINGAND A DEEPER BONDTwice that week, we were invited byBart’s wife Kathy to participate in a groupmeditation experience. Kathy is a skilledtrainer, meditator and certified CrystalBowl Sound Healing practitioner. TheGrand Palladium Vallarta offered us a quietspace in a private room filled with bean bagchairs, pillows and blankets where Kathyurged each of us to get comfortable andbe open to new experiences. In a groundedmanner that spoke of her experiences withveterans and their mindset, she offeredinsight into the practice of meditation andcrystal bowl sound healing. Eyes closed oropen, Kathy’s voice was enough to allowone to relax and let go. She held the spacebeautifully. After bringing us to a placeof comfort and quietude, Kathy slowlybegan to introduce the sounds of thebowls. A deep, vibrant ringing coupled withoccasional soft gongs, as she fluidly movedfrom different bowl shapes and sizes in ourcandlelit room and brought the men and metogether in an unexpected way.To witness these elite military veteranssoften around the experience of the bowlsA WATER LOVER’S MAGAZINE39

An all-star crew of professional surf coaches, top leveladministrators and ambassadors of stoke, the SUPVets elite squadron of (from top) Felipe Hernandez,Loren Saxby, Daniel Hughes and World ChampionSean Poynter make for a formidable force to raise yourperformance to the next level.Alam Garciaand meditation, profoundly moved me.In addition, it opened up our realm ofconversation afterwards to talk about thingslike faith, meditation practices, PTSDand our connection to the ocean. Mealstogether took on a new depth of discussion.Diving deep into values, beliefs andmotivations, whatever walls had been leftup began to come down. Things got real, honest and raw. It is easy to understandwhy men whose daily existence requiresthem to be in charge 100% of the time,40STANDUP JOURNALrelish a moment to discuss the motivationsthat drive them. For many of us, thesemeditation sessions and their aftermathwere a favorite part of the trip.MISSION COMPLETE: OFF THE COAST& CHARGING THE FUN FACTOROn our 2nd to last day together, many of uswere physically maxed out. After surfing forover six hours daily, muscles were on highalert from over exertion. These are not menwho give up easily nor go at less than fullpower when given a set of instructions. As aresult, our SUP surfing progression sessionswith the coaches became full-out attackson waves with maximum focus and a desireto progress beyond what a normal humanbeing might expect. So, on Thursday afternoon, rather thanrisk additional injury (there were a coupleof men down already from attemptingpowerful surfing techniques the body wasn’tready for yet) GenRation brought in acouple of pangas - or covered boats - totake us off the mainland of Mexico to oneof the outlying islands. Boards fully loadedand beers in the cooler, we headed outacross the open o
