Resumes & Cover LettersMARKETING YOUR EXPERIENCEWhat To IncludeMost internships, research opportunities, and full-timejobs require you to submit a resume and cover letteras part of your application. These documents introduce you and your experiences in a professional, succinct format to a potential employer or reference.Their purpose is to market you as an excellent fit forthe position. Most resumes include several standard sections. Thesamples in this handout show examples of thesecommon sections and options for formatting. Thefollowing guidelines will help you make smartdecisions as you build a document to highlight yourprofessional value:As a freshman or sophomore, your resume will bebroad in scope; it’s okay to list leadership roles andexperiences from high school. Over time you willbecome more focused on professional interests andgoals, and your materials will become more tailoredto highlight the experiences that best represent theskills needed for positions you target.Permanent address: Listing an address is stillgenerally expected and common, but giving apermanent address (where your parents live) inaddition to your current address might not benecessary. Include it if you are looking for an opportunity in the same city to show that you can be readilyavailable.RESUME TIPSBlog, portfolio, LinkedIn address, website: If youhave these, include links to show examples of yourabilities, but be sure to edit and manage your onlinebrand. Everything you put online says somethingabout you. Control the message. What Your Resume Says About YouYour resume is a visual tool that markets who you areand what you have to offer to employers. The contentand format represent your personal brand. A document that is error free, easy to follow, and visuallyclean indicates your attention to detail and clearcommunication skills. Strive to include and describeexperiences in the way that is most meaningful toyour audience. Objective statement: Most college students can skipthis and instead use a cover letter to describe the fitbetween the employer’s needs and what you have tooffer. However, a summary is highly recommended fortechnical resumes (in which case, it may serve thepurpose of the cover letter) and for resumes of highlyexperienced people. A good summary statementfocuses on specific accomplishments and skills relatedto the position you’re seeking.NEED HELP WITH YOUR RESUME AND COVER LETTER?Stop by Quick Questions drop-in hours (Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. in DUC 110). Resumes and Cover Letters2Education: List institution, degree, major(s) andminor(s), graduation date, and location. Includeadditional degrees, coursework, or special programsin reverse chronological order. Transfer students withsignificant experience at another school can also listthat institution; however, it’s not necessary if the bulkof your degree was completed at WashU. Dual degreestudents should list both institutions. Study abroadcan also go in this section.GPA: List your GPA in the Education section if you areproud of it or if the employer asks for it. You can listyour cumulative GPA, major GPA, or science GPAdepending on your goals. This information is moreimportant in some fields than others. Ask advisors ifyou’re unsure.High school experiences: It is okay to list your highschool and related activities as a freshman or sophomore. The closer you get to graduation, the moreimportant it becomes to replace this information withmore recent experience. You want employers to seeyou as a young professional.Relevant coursework: Avoid long lists of typicalclasses. Include this section only if you wish tohighlight a few specific advanced, technical, orelective courses that directly relate to the positionyou’re seeking.Job experience: Restaurants, retail, camps, and workstudy all give you transferable skills sets includingvaluable experience managing information andrelationships.Internships, research, co-ops, leadership, service, shadowing: Paid or unpaid, these are excellent waysto build your Experience section. Describe them interms of your accomplishments. As your resumebecomes more robust, you may want to break theseinto more tailored sections (e.g. Teaching Experience,Research Experience).(314) dent groups: Whether you list these as anexperience, complete with description, or as anactivity depends on your level of leadership andinvolvement. If you gained significant skills oraffected change, list as you would an internship.Honors, awards, publications, professional memberships, exhibitions, presentations: These areexcellent things to include, particularly if they are fromyour college years. Be sure to give dates and, whennecessary, brief descriptions to give context. Whereyou list these depends on how many you have. Acareer advisor, career peer or mentor can help youstrategize.Hobbies, interests, personal travel: Most often, these are not worth the valuable space they take toinclude, unless you know they’ll help you connect withyour audience. Exceptions include significant personalprojects with defined skill sets (building robots, designing web sites) – these should be listed asexperiences and described with bullets.Skills: Indicate your knowledge of technical, language, research, computer (software, hardware, platforms, programming languages, operatingsystems, applications), and other specialized skills. Beaccurate when describing your level of knowledge orproficiency (basic, proficient, fluent). Or, you canquantify your experience (2 semesters of college-levelSpanish).Soft skills (such as “great communicator”): Theseproclamations hold no water for employers. Instead, illustrate your skills through the examples in yourbullet points and in your cover letter. Don’t just say it,prove it.

Resumes and Cover Letters3REFERENCESPrepare a list of references on a separate page instead of writing “References available upon request.” That way, youwill have them ready to go if an employer asks for them. Copy and paste your name and contact information fromyour resume onto a second page and list the name, title, address, phone, and e-mail of three to four people. Greatpeople to list include professors, employers, student group advisors, and internship supervisors. Contact all references before you list them to ensure that they are comfortable acting as a reference for you. Once you have provided the reference list to an employer, contact each reference and provide him/her with the job title, description, company name, and the name of the person who will be in contact.TAILORING YOUR RESUMEThe position description and/or organizationalresearch will help you identify the employer’s needsand the characteristics they desire in an ideal candidate. Make it easy for them to see how you fit the billwith the following strategies:Show them where to look:Devote the most real estate on your document to theexperience that will resonate the most with therecipient. You probably don’t need 4 bullets todescribe your summer experience at Banana Republic, unless you’re gunning for a buyer role there.Use headings that highlight critical skills:Within each section, you should list experiences inreverse chronological order. However, as you developmore skills and experience, you can design thesection headings and intentionally order them in away that draws attention to the things that you mostwant the employer to notice. (e.g. Theater DesignExperience, Project Management Experience)Use key words:Notice and match the language from the positiondescription and the organization’s web site. This mightmean slight tweaks to the way you describe yourexperience (saying “taught” vs. “coached”, forexample), but shows that you understand their goalsand culture. You could also work in key words byadding relevant coursework. Some companies usesoftware to cull through applications based on keyword recognition.Be judicious about what you include:In most cases, as a college student, your resumeshouldn’t go on for pages. You may have to cut outsome things to make it easier for the recipient tofocus on the most important things. It can be difficultto be objective about this, so seek opinions fromothers.THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A RESUME AND A CVA curriculum vitae (CV) is very similar to a resume in terms of most key formatting. Some countries refer to the CVthe same way we refer to a resume. In the US, a CV is distinct from a resume in the sense that it is used primarily inacademic and research circles or in medical careers. CVs are more comprehensive than resumes because they cango beyond one page, and therefore do not need to be as tailored. They typically include academic research, publications, and presentations. For some good examples, look for the CVs of some of your professors to see howthey’ve represented their body of experience. For most undergraduate students, the difference between a resumeand CV is negligible.(314) 935-5930careers@wustl.educareercenter.wustl.edu

Resumes and Cover Letters4WRITING AN EFFECTIVE BULLETYour goal is to make it easy for a future employer to see your capabilities, based on what you’ve done in the past. Areyou good on the phone? Comfortable fielding questions from the public? Reliable with major projects requiringorganization? Experienced at analyzing data on Excel? Employers will only know if you tell them. Say what you actually did: It does no good to usefancy words if your description is unclear or doesn’tmake sense. When the employer initially reviews yourdocument, you won’t be there to provide explanations or insight. Avoid vague phrasing and state yourcontributions accurately, simply, and clearly. Focus on accomplishments: When possible, state theresults of your efforts rather than just yourresponsibilities. Describe your experience through the lens of transferrable skills: Determine which aspects of your previouswork most relate to the employer’s needs, anddescribe your qualifications accordingly. For example, customer service skills your gained in retail could bevaluable in other client-based work.Give numbers and details, in a concise way: Howmuch money did you raise? How many people didyou manage on the committee? Which major companies were on your client list? How, exactly, did youpersonally contribute to the project? Don’t use a lot ofwords, but paint a defined picture.Example Bullet: Helped plan sorority socialExample Bullet Revised: Collaborated as part of a five-member executiveteam to plan and implement a charitable socialevent that raised 5,000 for a local non-profitMAKING IT ONE PAGE AND EASY TO READEmployers spend just seconds reviewing each resume so it’s critical to make your information easy to absorb. Moststudents should aim for a one page resume. If you have more relevant content, two full pages are preferable to anodd half page. Margins and typeface: Margins should be even on allsides, but can go as low as .5 inch. With the exceptionof your name, which should be bigger, your typefaceshould be 10-11 point font. It’s generally smart to usethe same professional typeface throughout.Don’t use a template. These lock you into formattingthat can be restrictive as your document develops.Make each line count: You might be able to slim downyour name and contact information, or only use oneaddress. Rephrase bullets that have one or two wordsthat run to a second line. Condense words and phrasesto make them more concise without losing meaning.(314) 935-5930careers@wustl.educareercenter.wustl.edu Eliminate old or irrelevant experiences: This isespecially important if they can be trumped by morerecent, similar ones. Format: Check for consistency and parallel structure inthe way you list key information such as headings, titles, dates, and locations. Also ensure yourdocument is visually balanced, meaning you fill thepage evenly and leave enough white space.
