College of the Mainland 2021-2022 CatalogA Message from the President5courses in the same subject at the same time with the developmentalcourse serving as a tutor for the college credit course. COM was the firstcollege or university in Texas to fully implement this program and theresults are impressive.Students also are benefitting from a redesign of community collegeeducation through Guided Pathways to Success. Through GPS, thecollege is diligently working to provide students with structured pathwaysthat lead to the successful and timely completion of a degree orcertificate. This also includes providing students with program mapsthat will result in a smooth transfer to a four-year college or university.COM academic courses transfer to public universities throughoutTexas. As one of the most affordable colleges in the state, students maycomplete an associate degree in small classes at a fraction of the cost ofa university.The college also has a robust workforce program with a variety ofcourses offered from process technology and welding to allied healthand cosmetology among others which affords students to earn acertificate and then join the workforce. A police academy, fire academyand emergency medical technician classes remain popular amongstudents.College of the Mainland also has adult education for those wanting tocomplete courses and pass the Texas high school equivalency exam andoffers English as a Second Language, too.College of the Mainland is transforming with the construction of manynew buildings – STEAM/Allied Health Building, Industrial Careers Buildingand a Student Success Center – following the overwhelming voterapproval of a 162.5 million bond referendum in November 2018. Thefour-story STEAM building will contain 24 classrooms, 28 labs and 9student areas and will allow the college to expand its popular nursingprogram and the cyber security networking lab, as well as add many newprograms to its Texas City campus.Welcome and thank you for considering College of the Mainland.Whether you are a first-time college student or returning to college, youwill find that College of the Mainland offers a wide variety of courses thatcan be applied toward an associate degree or workforce certificate plusthere are plenty of other classes that will pique your interest.As a community college, we attract a spectrum of students from highschool students who attend Collegiate High School and enroll in dualcredit courses to 90-plus-year-olds who take classes as part of theLifelong Learning Center. The new site will house dual credit and general educationclasses for students in north Galveston County cities.
