THE HISTORY OF SHIPBUILDING AND PROTEST1294: First shipyard is established on the River Tyne, building ships for Edward the1 of England.st1852: The Swan Hunter Yard is established in Wallsend, Newcastle upon Tyne.1906: The Mauretania, a transatlantic ocean liner, is launched from Swan Hunter. The ship was 790 feet long with a beam of 88 feet and a gross tonnage of 31,938 tons.It carried 2,000 passengers on its maiden voyage on November 16, 1907 and wonthe Blue Riband for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic, a record held for 22 years.1920–1933: During the global economic downturn, 28 shipyards are closed in the North East.GEORDIE GLOSSARYGeordie is the dialect of Tyneside in the North East ofEngland. On the border with Scotland and as a deep seaport, the city has its own distinct accent and a lexiconof words drawn from Scandinavian and Baltic languagesfrom across the North Sea, Scots, Scots Gaelic, andRomany. For this production we are not using thebroadest of accents, but we have retained some of thewonderful sound and words of the North East.1938–1950: Many shipyards are reinstated and nationalized to build ships for the war effort.Al Reet: All right1970: The Conservative government is elected under Edward Heath.Aye: Yes1971: The Heath government attempts to close the Upper Clyde Yard in Glasgow despite theYard being economically viable. Led by trade union leader Jimmy Reid, the laborers occupy theyard and stage a work-in, where they continue working despite the yard’s proposed closure. In a span of 18 months, the workers complete several ships, and in 1972, the government isforced to keep the yard in operation.Canna: Cannot1972 & 1974: Miners begin protest strikes, which paralyze the country and lead to huge wageincreases, directly bringing down Ted Heath’s Conservative government in 1974.1973: Britain joins the European Economic Community.1974: Election ends in a “hung parliament” with Harold Wilson as prime minister.1977: In the Ridley Plan, MP Nicholas Ridley proposes how the next Conservative governmentcould fight and defeat a major strike in a nationalized industry. Privatization of heavy industryand the systematic weakening of the power of trade unions becomes a central objectiveof “Thatcherism.”1978–1979: Strikes paralyze Britain during the so-called Winter of Discontent. In responseto government wage restraining, inflation, and IMF austerity measures, a massive wave ofindustrial unrest spreads across Britain.May 1979: Conservative Margaret Thatcher becomes Britain’s first female prime minister.March 1984: A 12-month “miners strike” over pit closures begins. National Union ofMineworkers (NUM) chief Arthur Scargill unites various strikes into nationwide industrialaction without a ballot.June 1984: During the battle of Orgreave, 5,000 riot police take on 5,000 protestors. The BBCedits footage of this violent confrontation to make it appear as though the miners instigatedviolence when, in fact, the police baton charged protestors.September 1984: Thousands of miners and police clash once more at Malty Colliery nearRotherham. Protestors had been out of work for six months and the lack of income was startingto take its toll.November 1984: A growing number of miners decide to return to work as Christmas looms.Violence on the picket lines becomes more widespread.Divvin’t: Don’tDivvin’t Kna: Don’t knowDoon: DownGan: GoHaddaway: Exclamation of dismay or disgust, “go on,”“do one,” “go away”; as in, “Haddaway with you”Hinny: Woman, often wife/partner/girlfriend; expressesconnection and affectionHoway: General exclamation, literally meaning “comeon,” can be positive (“Howay, let’s go”) or negative(“Howay, stop that”)Hoy: ThrowMan: Person regardless of gender, see “HowayMeg-Man”Nowt: NothingOwt: AnythingPet: Term of affection regardless of genderQuay (pronounced “key”): DockQuayside: DocksideRadgie: Crazy person, often a young man, unpredictable, irrational, possibly violent, certainly irresponsibleSlipway: Where the ship is constructed and launchedMarch 3, 1985: Delegates at a NUM conference decide 98-to-91 to end the strike.Telt: ToldDecember 8, 1986: Major national industries are privatized.
