Many ofthe 8th graders have applied for high schoolspecialty programs. The counselors will submit these applications to the high schools onFebruary 17th. The first round of notificationsfrom the high schools will begin the week ofMarch 10th for students who are selected forinterviews or tests. Final acceptance letterswill be mailed by April 21st. Good luck to allour 8th graders who have applied!The counselors will begin academic sessionswith our 7th graders in February. Our7th graders will take a career inventory withtheir school counselor and complete their academic career plan. The academic careerplans are mandated from the Department ofEducation and helps your child focus on theirstrengths and apply them to future goals.Please join us on Thursday, March 23rd at6:00 PM. The School Counseling Departmentwill be holding our annual Access CollegeNight with the Access College Foundation. This event is geared for our 7th and8th grade families to prepare them for highschool and financing college. Dinner anddoor prizes will be provided that evening!Students will participate in our College/CareerFair on Tuesday, March 28th during their elective times. Then on Wednesday, March29th students who took the PSAT will go on acollege tour of James Madison University.Parents please remember we offer parent/teacher conferences on the 2nd and4th Monday of every month. Please call theschool counseling office to schedule a conference with your child’s teacher. We look forto continue to partner with you in yourBeginning in March and carrying through May wardchild’seducation.all students will meet with their counselor tobegin planning their courses for the followingschool year. The current 6th and 7th graderswill complete a course request form, requesting the electives they would like to takenext year. Please remember the classes theyselect are just requests, as offerings andspace may be limited for next school year.

Way to go!The National Math Club is one of the distinct programs of the MATH COUNTS FOUNDATIONthat gives students the opportunity to engage in mathematics that is non-competitive, funand different from "textbook math." It helps build students’ confidence and improve theirattitudes towards math and problem solving.Tips for Developing Strategic Readers and WritersAll students are encouraged to read and write leisurely at home. Some activities include:1. Use “snail” mail to write to a family member or friend.2. Find a recipe and create a "Chopped" masterpiece.3. Check out a magazine about a favorite hobby and share it with a friend or teacher.4. Read to a sibling, family member, friend, or pet, three times a week.5. Write to the editor of the local paper responding to an article that is near and dear toyour heart.6. Send multiple texts using correct, grammar, punctuation, and spelling.Complete three of these activities with evidence and receive incentives from the Englishdepartment.
