Applying to study in the USAChoosing a university programme is a very important decision. You will need to think about the typeof university you are most interested in, the location of the university, the choice of activities onoffer, and the costs.Information on all of these areas isreadily available through universitywebsites. Many universities also haveadmissions counsellors who can talkto you about your options. Werecommend that you think carefullyabout what choices are right for youand then choose an undergraduateprogramme that suits your needs.There are a large number and varietyof higher education institutions inthe USA. Four-year institutionstypically offer full bachelor degreeprogrammes, whereas two-yearcolleges usually offer associatedegree programmes. You will needto begin researching college optionsas early as possible so that you canmeet all the application and testingdeadlines where applicable.The US-UK Fulbright Commission’swebsite (www.fulbright.org.uk)provides useful hints on how tocomplete the Common Application,as well as tips on the applicationprocess, for international students.What subjects can I study?How do I apply?Leaving Examinations, and can alsobe inputted as current year courses inthe ‘Education’ section. Universitiesmay also offer their own institutionspecific applications and most areavailable online.All universities will require you tocomplete an application form.Many universities, but not all, usethe Common Application form(www.commonapp.org) whichallows you to apply to multipleinstitutions using one form. Thismust be submitted online. A Levelsare specifically listed in the ‘Testing’section, under Senior SecondaryYou will be required to answer one ormore essay questions and provideinformation regarding your extracurricular activities. Your school willneed to submit other forms, includinga transcript (your detailed academicrecord while at school), one or morerecommendation letters and a letterfrom your guidance counsellor/tutor/head teacher or equivalent.Many US universities allow you to takea range of subjects in the first twoyears of your undergraduate degreebefore specialising in Years 3 and 4.This means that you will have theopportunity to explore the differentsubjects on offer before making a finaldecision on your major field of study.In some disciplines, however, curriculabegin in Year 1. Course requirementsvary widely from university touniversity and are typically availableon the institution’s website.It is important to note that inthe American university system,medicine, pharmacy, veterinaryscience and law are only availableas postgraduate courses. If you areinterested in studying one of thesefields, you should plan to meetwith an advisor at your universityonce you have enrolled in yourundergraduate degree to discussyour postgraduate plans.Do I need a Grade PointAverage (GPA)?Cambridge qualifications are awardedusing grades and do not have anumerical grade point average.Most universities prefer that youapply giving details of your gradesand do not enter any informationabout grade point averages. Theyunderstand the meaning of thegrades for their systems and willbe able to assess your applicationusing this information. Applying to study in the USA continuedevaluators can be used to obtain aGPA if you are specifically requestedto provide this. The university maysuggest which credential evaluatoryou should use in this case. Weoften recommend that students seeka credential evaluation from morethan one evaluation service. There isno universal method for calculatingthe GPA, so differences can occurbetween credential evaluators.If you are unsure what is required,check with your chosen university,explaining which qualifications youhold or are studying.Do I need to take SATs?Entry to many universities in theUSA requires students to presentstandardised test results from theSAT (www.collegeboard.org) orthe ACT (www.act.org).Some universities may also exemptstudents from all tests. Make sure youcheck the admissions requirements foryour chosen university well in advanceof making an application and thencontact the university if you are unsureabout what is required.Do I need to take an Englishlanguage proficiency test?The most common English languageproficiency tests required byuniversities are TOEFL and IELTS.
