MUSIC PRODUCTIONOVERVIEWModern music production has become integrated with technologyin a synthesis of technical, artistic, and creative skills. Exploringthe link between original, creative ideas and the tools used toimplement them increases the development of a person’s technicaland expressive abilities.Participants produce an original musical piece that is designed tobe played during the national TSA conference opening or closinggeneral sessions. The musical piece should be energizing,interesting, and of a spirit consistent with the Technology StudentAssociation.R In recent years,developments incommunicationtechnology havedramatically changedthe way music isELIGIBILITYEntries are limited to three (3) teams per state. Teamwork is stronglyexperienced. Duringthe past century,encouraged, but an individual may participate solo in this teamrecorded music wentevent.from nonexistentTIME LIMITSA. Entries must be started and completed during the current schoolyear.B. The musical piece should be more than one (1) minute and lessthan three (3) minutes in length. There will be a five (5)-pointdeduction for each five (5) seconds under the one (1)-minuteminimum and a five (5)-point deduction for each 15 secondsto the primary waypeople listen tomusic. Music ProductionLEAP LEADERSHIP RESUME/INTERVIEWA Team LEAP Leadership Resume is required for this event andmust be submitted at event check-in. Semifinalists will respondto interview questions related to their submitted LEAP Resumefor a maximum of five (5) minutes. A team competing in thisevent will use the Team LEAP Leadership Resume template; anindividual competing in this event will use the Individual LEAPLeadership Resume template.ATTIRECompetition attire, as described in the National TSA Dress Codesection of this guide, is required for this event.PROCEDUREA. Participants check in their entries (portfolio, CD, and LEAPLeadership Resume) at the time and place stated in theconference program.B. Entries are reviewed by evaluators. Neither students noradvisors are present at this time.R Read theGeneral Rules andRegulations section inthe front of this guidefor information thatapplies to all of TSA’scompetitive events.Music Productionteams should payclose attention to therule related to originalwork and the user ofmaterials from othersources.C. Each semifinalist team explains its portfolio and musical piece tothe evaluators and discusses the purpose, value, and creativeprocess of its work. Semifinalist teams will not be allowed toobtain their portfolios until their scheduled interview time.E. The LEAP interview will be conducted as part of the semifinalistpresentation and will last a maximum of five (5) additionalminutes.It is essential that students and advisors routinely check theTSA website (www.tsaweb.org) for updated information aboutTSA general rules and competitive events. There will be a five (5)-pointdeduction for each five (5) seconds under the one (1)-minuteminimum and a five (5)-point deduction for each fifteen (15)seconds over the three (3)-minute maximum length.D. Musical pieces thirty (30) seconds or less will be disqualified.E. All entries become the property of TSA for non-profit promotionalpurposes and will not be returned after judging.F.All musical pieces must be the original work of the team andmust have been completed within the current school year.G. Free, non-copyrighted sounds, loops, or other musical elementsmay be incorporated into musical pieces. The sources of theseelements and the way in which they are used in the musicalpiece must be described in the portfolio, and the track list mustillustrate these elements.H. Each actual instrument, voice, and/or synthesized instrumenttrack used in the final music piece must be illustrated in atimeline format in the portfolio.I.Where applicable, all ideas, sounds, and loops from othersources must be cited. If copyrighted material is used, properwritten permission must be included (see the Student CopyrightChecklist). NOTE: Failure to follow this procedure results indisqualification.J.The CD and documentation materials are turned in to the eventcoordinator at the time and place stated in the conferenceprogram. Documentation materials (comprising a “portfolio”) arerequired and should be secured in a clear front report cover. Thereport cover must include the following single-sided, 8½" x 11"pages, in this order:1. Title page with the title of the musical piece, the event title,the conference city and state, and the year; one (1) page2. Table of contents; pages as needed3. Plan of Work log that indicates preparation for the event,as noted by date, task, time involved, team memberresponsible, and comments (see Forms Appendix or TSAwebsite); one (1) page4. Purpose and description of the musical piece; one (1) page5. Self-evaluation of the piece using criteria from the officialrating form; one (1) page6. Lyrics; pages as needed7. Depending upon thestated purpose, musical pieces are judged on coherence, style,creativity, and artisanship, as well as technical attributes, creativity,organization, and their overall effect. Additionally, the musical pieceand portfolio should reflect familiarity with the technologies used inmusical production. Portfolios should be complete, well written, andprofessional in organization and appearance. Late entries are considered on acase-by-case basis and only when the lateness is caused byevents beyond the participant’s control. Requirements for attiredo NOT apply during check-in.D. Place an entry number on each CD and portfolio. Secure theentries in the designated area.E. One (1) hour before the event is scheduled to begin, meet withevaluators/assistants to review time limits, procedures, andregulations. If questions arise that cannot be answered, speakto the event manager before the event begins.F.Evaluators independently assess the entries.G. For participants who violate the rules, the decision either todeduct 20% of the total possible points or to disqualify theentry must be discussed and verified with the evaluators, eventcoordinator, and a CRC manager.H. The number of evaluator teams depends on the number ofentries.
