What we will discuss? Purposes and uses of theResumeStandard Resume FormatsResume SectionsFormatting TipsSpecial ConsiderationsKeywords5

The Purpose of the ResumeThe resume’s main purpose is to get you aninterview! It is often the first item a potential employer seesabout you and therefore is very importantA resume is a short descriptive account of your workexperience, education, qualifications, achievements, and special skills.(In addition, a resume may be requested by ascholarship committee or be part of your admissionsapplication for graduate or professional school).6

Resumes can be used in the followingways: To network with others, including at Career FairsTo be submitted along with an employer jobapplication form and/or cover letter as you apply foropen positionsTo be taken to a job interviewTo be coupled with a dynamic online presence, particularly, your LinkedIn profile7

Standard Resume FormatsReverse ChronologicalFunctional8

Reverse Chronological ResumeStarts with your current experiences, andthen goes back in time chronologically. Most employers prefer this resume format.9

Sample- Reverse Chronological Resume10

Functional ResumeConcentrates on your particular areas ofexpertise and specialized skills and abilities, rather than on individual job duties.Job candidates who are entering new fields orhave experience unrelated to their careergoals might want to choose this format, because it focuses on transferrable skills, not specific job experiences.11

Sample – Functional Resume12

Resume SectionsI.Personal InfoII. ObjectiveIII. Summary of QualificationsIV. EducationV. Work ExperienceVI. SkillsVII. Awards & ActivitiesVIII. Volunteer ExperienceIX. References(this can vary)13

I. Personal Information Name should stand out.Can vary the placement of name, address, phone number, email address.List only one phone number.Professional-sounding voicemessageProfessional email addressIn certain cases, “AfghanCitizen” is appropriate here.14

II. Objective Short and sweet is preferred if you areusing your resume to apply for a specificposition.Example: “Seeking position as HRManager in UNDP.”If you are taking your resume to a careerfair or uploading it to a website, theobjective should be general.Example: “Seeking full-time accountingposition.”15

III. Summary of Qualifications Could also be called:“Profile”,“Qualifications”, or“Highlights”Should be tailored to thejob in question via the jobdescriptionExample“Blends academic trainingin social work with threeyears experience workingwith diverse clientele.Adept at interviewing, report writing andproblem-solving.Professional, collaborativeand committed.”16

IV. Education Most recent degreeor current studylisted first University List expected dateof graduation.Spell out collegename: Kabul High school(freshmen only)List graduation withhonors or high GPAList options, minorsand certificates.17

V. Work Experience/Work History Part I Current or most recent job experience firstNot all jobs need to be listed - - why?List job title first.Include employer’s name and city.Use bullets or paragraphs to detail jobduties and accomplishments. Each descriptive phrase should begin withan action verb. (current job – use present tense;previous jobs – use past tense) If using bullet format, no more than 5 or 6bullets items per job.18

V. Work Experience/Work History Part 2 Prioritize the order in which you describejob duties, with the most relevant oneslisted first.Divide your work experienceinto “Related Experience” and “OtherExperience”, if appropriate.Remember to list internships if they arerelated to your field. It doesn’t matter ifyou were paid or not – good experience isgood experience!19

IX. References “available upon request” Ideally, have at least 3people agree to be yourreferences. Do not ask family orfriends, but consideremployers, professors, scout leaders, clergy whoknow you well enough toaddress your talents andattributes as a goodemployee, student orcitizen.Give your references a copy ofyour resume and keep themupdated on your job hunt.(Never list yourreferences’ names onthe resume). Instead, only if requested, provide a listthat includes: reference name, job title, place of employment, phone number and emailaddress.23

Formatting TipsThere is not one specific way to format your resume. You have many choices. But the advice presented inthis workshop comes from what employers tell usabout their preferred resume formats.A word about resume templates. You may choose touse a resume template (a means by which you ‘plug in’your information into a prescribed format) but it isn’trecommended unless you are short on time.Templates aren’t flexible and generally don’t allow forcustomization – thus, use your own Microsoft Wordskills to create your own unique document!24

Formatting Tips, Part I Use one font and samesize throughoutdocument (exception –your name)Use BOLD toemphasize only themost importantfeatures of yourresume Acceptable typesizes are 10, 11and 12 pt.Be consistent withtabs, dates andother formattingfeatures25

Formatting Tips, Part 2 Length is only important ifyou are handling the hardcopy of the resume, inwhich case it should be oneor two full pages.Decide on an overalldesign scheme – bulletsor paragraphs?Make the resumeprofessional-lookingand inviting to read.26

Special ConsiderationsYour resume should be targeted to the specificjob you are applying for. The job description helps you customize yourresume to the employer’s needs.Make sure the employer doesn’t miss out on yourmost marketable assets: put them in priority orderin the top half or top two-thirds of the resume.27

It’s all in the details Do not use personalpronounsDouble check yourspelling, grammar andpunctuationPrint your resume on agood printer and useheavy (20 to 24 pound)neutral-colored paper28

The whole truth, and nothing but the truth . . .Never ever include falseinformation on your resume. With the technology that isavailable today, employers caneasily check on your background.29

What is Curriculum Vitae?30

What is a CV? And how does it differ from aresume? A curriculum vitae (or CV) is longer and much moredetailed than a resume because its purpose isdifferent.CV’s are usually requested from individuals whoare applying for graduate or professional schooladmission, or job opportunities related to science, research, or higher education.Career Center staff can review your CV, just aswe review student resumes.31

A short summary of youreducational & work history,awards & achievements32

It’s not One Size Fits All!You need to tailor yourC.V to each position youapply for.33

Funny Facts The average time spent by recruiters looking at aresume: 5 to 7 seconds. 76% of resumes are discarded for an unprofessionalemail address. 88% rejection rate when you include a photo onyour resume. 68% of employers will find you on Facebook. There are 15 million brands and organizations onFacebook. 18,400,000 applicants found their job on Facebook. 10,200,000 applicants found their job on LinkedIn. 89% of recruiters have hired someone throughLinkedIn. 8,000,000 applicants found their job on Twitter.34

Types Of CV Chronically:A chronological CV focuses on presenting the candidate'sexperience on an employer-by-employer basis, with the postsbeing listed in reverse chronological order. Chronological CVsshould also contain a brief personal statement at the frontwhich sets out the key skills and strengths of the candidate. This is the most common type of CV. Functional:Unlike a chronological CV, a functional CV places the emphasison your skills and expertise rather than the chronology of youremployment to date. Combined35
