FROM OUR MINISTER“Of all the trails in life there is one that matters more than all theothers. It is the trail of the true human being.” (Kicking Bear – NativeAmerican Chief.) Is Bush Hill Park United Reformed Church on thattrail? Some answers to being fully human may include: being real; makinggood relationships; being a good lover; to be sensual, understanding, and beautiful inside; to be in touch with your feelings; to flow into yourpotential; to have the masculine-feminine balance correct; to behealthy in body and mind; to be free; to live and die well; to appreciategood food, friends and things; to appreciate the wonder of life; beingalive with all your senses; to be deep but full of fun.Being a church means that weneed to be fully human byallowing our humanness to fullyreflect God’s likeness in us.God’s glory then becomes aworship lived to the full. To beredeemed is to be redeemed intoall that we are meant to be; to belike Jesus, who is the mostcomplete human being.understand the signs of God’slife in our everyday and innerworlds. I well remember my greatgrandmotherwhowouldregularly stop what she wasbusily doing to thank God for hersuccess at darning a sockbeautifully, or asking Him to findher needle she had dropped. Hereveryday was really grounded inher Maker!Being more Christ-like is tounderstand fully the differencebetween good and evil whichGod has given us an innatecapacity to do. So, for example, shame, guilt, fear & furtivenessare all signs alerting us to thefact we’re making wrong choices. We need therefore to be achurch that seeks to understandwithout judgement. In the early years of the ChristianChurch we are aware of; “SeehowChristiansloveoneanother.” being a quality that wastruly visible to the outside world. The credo for living in this lovingattitude was preached by Jesuson a mountainside one day inwhat we now call The Beatitudes(Matthew 5.1 – 12). How werelate is summed up fully inthese “beautiful attitudes” ofJesus and should form the basisTo rediscover the ‘windows toour souls’ is to find and read and3

who is unable to sympathise withour weaknesses, but we haveone who has been tempted ineveryway, just as we are—yetwas without sin. 16 Let us thenapproach the throne of gracewith confidence, so that we mayreceive mercy and find grace tohelp us in our time of need.of our relationships in everycircumstance, committee andconversation. Following them isto be blessed by God in everyaspect of our living. As being human is fraught withhuman weakness, we need apowerful leader in our high priestJesus Christ. Hebrews 4:14-16(ANIV)14 Therefore, since wehave a great high priest who hasgone through the heavens,Jesus the Son of God, let us holdfirmly to the faith we profess. 15For we do not have a high priestBeing human is to truly followJesus Christ our Saviour in allwe do.4

Smile LinesPalm SundayIt was Palm Sunday but because of a sore throat, eight-year-oldJames stayed home from church with a neighbour. When the family returned home, they were carrying several palm fronds. Jamesasked them what they were for. “People held them over Jesus'head as he walked by,” his father told him."Wouldn't you know it," Johnny fumed, "the one Sunday I don't go,and he shows up."FlowersThere are women whose thoughtful husbands buy them flowers forno reason. And then there's me. One day I couldn't stand it anylonger. "Why don't you ever bring me flowers?" I asked."What's the point?" my husband said. "They die after about aweek.""So could you," I shot back, "but I still like having you around."GrannyThe little boy came home from his first day at Sunday School. Hetold his mother that his Sunday School teacher was Jesus' granny.Startled, his mother replied, “"How did you reach that conclusion?""Well, she never stops talking about Jesus," he replied.HappyNever miss an opportunity to make others happy, even if you haveto leave them alone in order to do it.ScienceProtons have mass? I didn't even know they were Catholic.5

Visit of the Moderator, Reverend Doctor Andrew PrasadOn the 21st March the Moderator is coming to preach at the service to mark 100 years of worship on this site. A reserved man, Charlie met Phyl at a dance during the waryears and it was love at first sight! He served in the GrenadierGuards in the war in Palestine. We have indeed been blessed by his care and we pray God'sblessing on Phyl his wife, his daughter Ann and son Stephen andhis family. Mothering Sunday - 14th MarchThere is an old Jewish saying:God could not be everywhere, and therefore He made mothers.Mother Church, Mother Earth, Mother of the Gods - our human mothers - all of them have been part of the celebration of ‘Mothering Sunday’ - as the fourth Sunday in Lent is affectionately known. In Roman times, great festivals were held every Spring to honour Cybele, Mother of all the Gods. Other pagan festivals in honour of MotherEarth were also celebrated. With the arrival of Christianity, the festivalbecame one honouring Mother Church.During the Middle Ages, young people apprenticed to craftsmen orworking as ‘live-in’ servants were allowed only one holiday a year onwhich to visit their families - which is how ‘Mothering Sunday’ got itsname. This special day became a day of family rejoicing, and theLenten fast was broken. In some places the day was called SimnelDay, because of the sweet cakes called simnel cakes traditionallyeaten on that day.Palm Sunday - 28th MarchHoly Week begins with Palm Sunday, when the Church remembershow Jesus arrived at the gates of Jerusalem just a few days before thePassover was due to be held. He was the Messiah come to his ownpeople in their capital city, and yet he came in humility, riding on ayoung donkey, not in triumph, riding on a war-horse.As Jesus entered the city, the crowds gave him a rapturous welcome, throwing palm fronds into his path. They knew his reputation as ahealer, and welcomed him. But sadly the welcome was short-lived andshallow, for Jerusalem would soon reject her Messiah, and put him todeath. On this day churches worldwide will distribute little crosses made frompalm fronds in memory of Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem.12

A message from the people our church sponsors children through:A New Year Message from JHFDear Praying Friends,At the beginning of a new year I am reminded of the words of Micahconcerning what the Father says is good, indeed what he requires of us, thatis to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with Him.China is a country with vast potential and vast need—including more than550,000 orphans; over 60 million disabled citizens; millions of elderly and sickpeople in need of basic care; and thousands of schools and businesses inneed of educational support. There is also a great moral and spiritual need.Since 1978, China has opened her doors to foreigners. At that time, a groupof Christian businessmen and academics from Hong Kong began building abridge for Christians to help meet these needs. As a result, Jian HuaFoundation was established in Hong Kong and since 1981 has equipped, enabled and supported Christian individuals to serve in China.Jian Hua means “build China”—and that is what we to do. Currently we havemore than 170 full-time associates teaching, operating businesses, practicingmedicine, managing orphanages, training medical personnel and midwives, and serving in community health and physical therapy programs - a list thatkeeps growing as new associates join us. In all we do, Jian Hua associatesbuild relationships—changing lives as we serve with hope and love. You Can Make a DifferenceToday, China’s doors are still wide open. The needs are great and theopportunities many. But, we can’t do it alone! We want to increaseawareness of Jian Hua. We want to expand existing projects and start newones. We want to better support and train our associates. Would you help?We need more
