Enables data transferIntroduction Hardware and module redundancyThe DeltaV OPC Data Access Server (OPC Server) providesa fast and efficient means for transferring data between theDeltaV system and OPC Data Access client applications. With redundant OPC servers, you decrease your probabilityof a failure of an OPC server or the Application Stationinterrupting your data transfer and causing costly downtime.Using redundant OPC servers increases your protection againsta single point of failure in the DeltaV OPC communications,so you are more protected against single point OPC serverhardware and software failures. Automatic switchover Online upgradable

OPC Data Access Server RedundancyThe redundant OPC servers reside on a dedicated pair ofApplication Stations. When the active OPC server fails, the standby OPC server automatically takes over, providingdata transfer without user intervention. The redundant OPC servers communicate with each other overthe DeltaV control network, so no special cabling is required toadd OPC server redundancy.BenefitsEnables data transfer. OPC redundancy consists of anactive and standby OPC server. If the active OPC server or itsassociated Application Station detects a failure, the standbyOPC server assumes the active role, providing reliable datatransfer under the right conditions. Your OPC communicationswill have increased protection against unexpected failures.Hardware and module redundancy. The redundant OPCservers reside on a pair of Application Stations. One ApplicationStation is dedicated to the active OPC server and the otherApplication Station is dedicated to the standby OPC server. In addition to hardware redundancy, the Assigned Modulessubsystem on the Application Station pair is also redundant, providing redundant operation for all control modules assignedto the Application Station pair.Automatic switchover. If the active OPC server or itsassociated Application Station detects a failure, the standbyOPC server assumes the active role automatically, with nouser intervention required. The standby OPC server is in “hotstandby” mode, so switchover occurs as quickly as possible.Depending on the failure condition and OPC redundancyconfiguration, the failed OPC server and Application Stationwill reboot and automatically assume the standby role, restoring OPC server redundancy with no user intervention.Online upgradable. Since the redundant OPC servers reside ona pair of Application Stations, the OPC servers can be upgradedonline under the right conditions. Similar to the DeltaVcontrollers, you can upgrade the standby OPC server and itsassociated Application Station while the active maintains OPCcommunications, then manually switch over to the upgradedApplication Station.www.emerson.com/deltavSeptember 2019Product DescriptionThe DeltaV OPC Data Access Server provides real-time,read/ write data communications to OPC client applications. For OPC data communications where you can’t affordinterruptions, the DeltaV system offers OPC server redundancyto minimize the risk of interruptions. You can add a standbyOPC server that operates in hot standby mode, mirroringthe operation of the active OPC server. When a monitored fault is detected, the active OPC serverfails over to the standby OPC server, which then assumes theactive role. Your OPC communications continue on the “new”active OPC server. In addition, the DeltaV Event Chroniclestores a record of each OPC server switchover and the reasonit occurred, if known. The redundant OPC servers reside on a pair of DeltaVApplication Stations. OPC server redundancy is configured inDeltaV Explorer from the Application Station Properties dialog. Then, during DeltaV workstation configuration, you identifythe Application Station that will host the initial active OPCserver and the Application Station that will host the initialstandby OPC server.Although there are two physical Application Stations thathost the redundant OPC servers, they are seen by the DeltaVsystem as a single workstation. The Application Station pairis known by the name configured for the initial active OPCserver node (e.g. REDOPC). The initial standby OPC servernode has the same name appended with S (e.g. REDOPC S).The Application Station pair appears in the DeltaV Explorersystem tree as a single icon.By configuring OPC server redundancy, a redundancysubsystem is created on the Application Station pair. Theredundancy subsystem transfers messages and data betweenthe Application Stations, keeping the OPC servers synchronized.2

OPC Data Access Server RedundancySeptember 2019OPC server redundancy also includes redundant AssignedModules on the Application Station pair. Any control modulesassigned to the Application Station pair are redundant. Landingyour OPC data in control modules running in the ApplicationStation pair enables redundant module execution, similar toredundant DeltaV controllers. When you assign control modulesto execute in the Application Station pair, the redundancysubsystem allows modules running in the standby AssignedModules subsystem to be synchronized with the modulesrunning in the active Assigned Modules subsystem. The DeltaV Diagnostics Explorer application shows the statusof the redundant OPC servers, the Application Station pair, and the redundancy subsystem, as shown below. The active OPC server and Assigned Modules subsystem worktogether with their associated Application Station to provideone-for-one redundancy with the standby OPC server, itsAssigned Modules subsystem, and its associated ApplicationStation. If a problem is detected with any of the monitoredcomponents on the active OPC server node, the entireApplication Station will switch over to the standby OPC servernode, with the standby OPC server assuming the active role.DeltaV Diagnostics Explorer allows you to view OPC Mirror redundancy diagnostics data.www.emerson.com/deltav3

OPC Data Access Server RedundancyWhen you configure DeltaV OPC server redundancy, theApplication Station itself is not redundant, only the OPC serverand Assigned Modules subsystem. In addition, the ApplicationStation pair is dedicated to redundant OPC communications.Once the Application Station pair is configured for OPCredundancy, no other subsystems on the Application Stationpair may be enabled. When you configure the Application Station pair for the firsttime, you identify the initial active and the initial standby OPCserver nodes. However, during operation, either ApplicationStation can host the active OPC server, depending on the lastswitchover. Since either OPC server can be the active OPCserver, each Application Station should be sized to handle theactive OPC server role.September 2019Some of the events that can cause a switchover are: OPC server failure DeltaV software process failures Application Station hardware failures Communication failures between the active andstandby OPC servers Manual switchover from DiagnosticsThe automatic OPC server switchover reduces the risk of losingdata in the event of a failure. If the active OPC server fails, thenstandby OPC server automatically becomes the active OPCserver. During normal operation, the standby OPC server is in“hot standby” mode, so switchover from the failed active tothe standby OPC server typically occurs immediately after theredundancy subsystem has detected the failure and triggeredthe switchover. The hot standby mode adds more load to theDeltaV system but allows immediate availability of OPC dataafter switchover.During Application Station switchover, which typically takesa few seconds (depending on the Application Station hardwareand the size of the OPC configuration), the OPC data will holdthe last value under the right conditions, enabling a bumplessdata transfer to the new active server. It is important to saythat there are conditions that cannot be detected and cancause a bump during a switchover. These undetectedconditions include and are not limited to: DCOM errors, synchronous read in the middle of switchover, software bugs, etc. A switchover event is generated and collected in theDeltaV Event Chronicle, providing notification to the operatorthat a switchover has occurred.A failed active OPC server and its associated Application Stationwill remain failed by default, waiting for the cause of the failureto be investigated. While the failed OPC server is in the failedstate, switchovers are disabled and the active OPC server is insimplex mode. However, you can configure the ApplicationStation pair to automatically reboot the failed ApplicationStation to allow the failed OPC server to assume the standbyrole without user interaction, if possible. A standby OPC serverthat assumes the active role will remain the active OPC serveruntil the next switchover.www.emerson.com/deltavFrom DeltaV Diagnostics you can see the status of the activeand standby OPC servers. Indication of the active and standbyOPC server status is also available from a redundancy statusfaceplate display located in the system tray on the ApplicationStation pair. You can upgrade the Application Station pair online withoutlosing OPC data communications between the DeltaV OPCservers and their associated client applications if the rightconditions exist. As mentioned before, there are undetectedconditions that can cause a bump in communications duringa switchover and need to be considered when performing anonline upgrade. An OPC Data Access client application connects to the OPCserver on the Application Station pair and does not need toknow which OPC server is currently active. The marshalling ofthe OPC client connection to the active OPC server is handledautomatically by DeltaV software. Under the right conditions,a failure of the active OPC server and switchover to the standbyOPC server does not impact communications to the OPCclient and can provide a bumpless transfer of OPC data. Duringswitchover, the OPC client receives the last good value, thenonce the standby OPC server becomes active, real-time OPCcommunications will resume.4

OPC Data Access Server RedundancyIn order to communicate with the redundant OPC servers, asmall software application must be installed on the OPC clientworkstation. If the OPC client is located on a non- DeltaVworkstation, installing the OPCRemote.exe application(located in the DVExtras folder on DeltaV installation DVD1)will install the redundant OPC server handler. If the OPC clientis located on a DeltaV workstation, running the RedundantDeltaV OPC Server application, located on the DeltaV StartMenu (Start DeltaV Installation Redundant DeltaVOPC Server) will install the redundant OPC server handler onthe DeltaV workstation. The redundant OPC server handlermanages the connection to the active OPC server. Youconfigure the redundant OPC server handler by identifyingthe Application Station pair.September 2019The OPC client connects to the redundant OPC serverhandler, which allows the OPC client to communicate withthe redundant OPC server without needing to know whichOPC server is active. The redundant OPC server handler alsoautomatically directs the OPC communications to the activeOPC server after switchover. In addition, the redundantOPC server handler allows you to configure the OPC clientconnections to just the active OPC server—the redundantOPC server handler allows the OPC client configuration tobe copied to the standby OPC server.3rd Party Workstation3rd PartyOPC ServerRedundantHandlerDeltaV OPCServerDeltaV cation Station Pair (Active/Standby)Redundant OPC servers are supported only on the ApplicationStation.
