SCANIA SERVICEEXCHANGE RANGE4Scania Parts Fact File – Service Exchange

SUSTAINABILITY AND COSTEFFECTIVENESSThe basis of an service exchange part is a wornout part that is returned to the supplier as acore. The core then forms the raw material in theremanufacturing process. When the customerpurchases an service exchange part, a deposit ispaid that is refunded when the core is returned. The core must be in sufficiently good conditionto enable its re-use. If the core is not in goodcondition then the reimbursement is reduced. Thecore must therefore be handled as valuable rawmaterial when it is returned. If the return criteria is met, the returned core willbe cleaned, inspected and remanufactured to thesame exacting standards as the new Scania part.Compared with new spare parts, serviceexchange parts have several advantages: Competitive prices Reduced use of raw materials Reduced CO2 emissions Reduced energy consumptionThis contributes to the ‘circular economy’ andsustainability.CUSTOMER COMMUNICATIONON THE SERVICE EXCHANGERANGESometimes it is uneconomical to replace wornparts with brand new ones, especially in oldervehicles, while trying to repair a broken part cantake an unnecessarily long time at the workshop. That’s why the Scania service exchange range is acost effective way to quickly get the vehicle backon the road. The Scania service exchange range gives accessto a wide range of remanufactured componentsat competitive prices. The range maintains thesame high quality as brand new spare parts and iscovered by the same warranties, which creates asense of security for the customer.Service exchange parts have the followingqualities:They contribute to reduced environmental impact.Remanufactured parts fulfil the same function asnew parts. They are remanufactured using standardisedindustrial processes in accordance with thetechnical specifications.A remanufactured part has the same warranty as anew part.5

SCANIACYLINDERHEADSAble to withstand the toughestoperating conditionsScania cylinder heads are optimised to maximiseengine performance and to ensure that the enginemeets emission requirements throughout it’sservice life.6Scania Parts Fact File - Cylinder head

CYLINDER HEAD FACTSWHAT WE HAVE DONEMaterial selection and precisionThe cylinder head is subjected to high stressesin operation, including high pressures andtemperatures that occur during combustion. Itscomponents must also withstand stresses whenthe valves open and close several hundred milliontimes during the service life of the cylinder head. The valves and valve seats must maintain sealingintegrity, and the valve guides and valve stemseals must ensure lubrication. For this reason, itis important to use the right material and maintainhigh precision during manufacture.1. Maintain shapeThe design and material specifications of Scaniacylinder heads are adapted to withstand thethermal and mechanical stresses that occurduring combustion and under difficult operatingconditions.2. Maintain sealing integrityScania valves and valve seats are designed tominimise wear and maintain sealing integrity usingcarefully selected materials and high machiningaccuracy. The valve stem seal also maintainssealing integrity under the high pressures thatoccur in the exhaust and intake ports, whilecontributing to the lubrication between valve andvalve guide.3. Exchange cylinder headsThe cylinder head is included in the Scania serviceexchange system and is supplied completewith valves to facilitate assembly and minimisedowntime. The exchange cylinder heads arealways supplied with valves adapted for difficultoperating conditions in order to ensure theservice life of the engine and not compromise theperformance of the head.7

SCANIAPISTON &LINER KITSLong service life withoptimum lubricationThe Scania cylinder systemprovides the best possibleperformance and service lifethanks to optimum lubrication.A new set of pistons and linersgives the engine new life.8Scania Parts Fact File – Piston & Liner Kits

CYLINDER SYSTEM FACTSWHAT WE HAVE DONEAn interaction between various componentsThe cylinder system is subjected to high stresses. When the mixture of fuel and air is compressedand ignited, the load on the piston increases up to18 tonnes. This takes place thousands of times perminute. Despite it being cooled, the temperatureof the piston still increases to approximately 400degrees. So it is important that cylinder liners, pistons and piston rings have the right propertiesand work perfectly together. Effective lubricationextends service life, and this is where the designand surface properties of the cylinder liner arecrucial.1. Long service lifeThe Scania cylinder system has a long servicelife thanks to meticulous material selection andoptimal surface structure. The cylinder liner isplateau-honed to ensure low friction and optimumlubrication, which reduces oil consumption andincreases service life. High-power engines usecylinder liners that have been honed and plasmasprayed, which also reduces the risk of corrosion.2. High performanceThe standard steel piston has a geometricallyoptimised combustion chamber that provideshigh performance and low emissions. Aluminiumpistons are used for lower-power engines. Thedesigns provide high strength and are able towithstand extreme loads.3. Tests and environmental impactThe Scania cylinder system has undergoneextensive testing in vehicles and under differentoperating conditions, such as with varyingloads and different oil and fuel grades. This is toensure that the components meet environmentalrequirements in force and provide long service lifeeven under tough operating conditions.9

SCANIA ENGINE OIL FILTERInsurance against engine failureScania oil filters have a high dirt absorption capacity, which is essential for following therecommended service intervals. Using Scania oil filters avoids unnecessary engine wearand minimises the risk of breakdown. This reduces maintenance costs and downtime.10 Scania Parts Fact File - Engine oil filter

ENGINE OIL FILTER FACTSWHAT WE HAVE DONEThe right filter and longer service lifeThe function of the oil filter is to collect impuritiessuch as metal particles and soot, while lettingthrough the right amount of oil to lubricate andcool the engine components.1. Tested for Scania enginesThe Scania engine oil filter is tested for Scaniaoil pressures and flows. The filter is tested on alltypes of Scania engines, since the oil is degradeddifferently depending on engine type. For example, engines with EGR can make the oil acidic. For thisreason, Scania carries out tests using acidic oil toensure that the filter can withstand this stress.Using an incorrectly specified oil filter can lead to: The filter becoming brittle and cracking due tounsuitable material Increased costs for maintenance and downtime Contaminated oil passing through, which canresult in engine failure In a worst-case scenario, the filter becomingclogged can lead to engine failure2. The right material in the filter mediumThe filter medium is made from synthetic andcellulose fibres to provide optimum resistanceagainst degraded oil. Using the right materialavoids the filter becoming brittle and cracking, which results in reduced wear and reduced risk ofengine failure.3. Withstands high pressuresThe Scania engine oil filter has high mechanicalstability and temperature resistance. This means itcan withstand high pressures which is particularlyimportant in modern lubrication systems.11

SCANIATURBOCHARGERAn investmentin economy andreliabilityScania turbochargers aredesigned and thoroughly testedfor Scania engines. Their buildand performance ensure that theydeliver optimum output whenrequired.12 Scania Parts Fact File - Turbocharger

TURBOCHARGER FACTSWHAT WE HAVE DONELow fuel consumption maintainedThe turbine shaft in a turbocharger rotates at up to130 000 rpm, with very tight tolerances betweenturbine blades and housing. Fuel consumptionincreases if the clearance is too great. Too littleclearance can cause the blades to come intocontact with the housing. This can cause extensivedamage, reduce efficiency and lead to oil enteringthe combustion chamber, which can result inengine failure.1. Advanced balancingScania turbochargers are manufactured with highprecision. The balancing of the turbine wheel andcompressor impeller, as well as the turbine shaft,is a process involving tight tolerances. Scaniaturbochargers are developed and tested for thevarious engines in the Scania range. Everythingpossible to provide optimum performance and thelowest possible emissions.2. Maintain sealing integrityVery high pressures are generated at theturbine outlet during exhaust braking. Scaniaturbochargers have been developed to withstandthis pressure and to minimise exhaust gas leakage(blow-by) during exhaust braking, which results inminimal oil leakage via the crankcase ventilation.13

SCANIAVG-TURBOCHARGEROptimised output andenvironmental performanceThe Scania turbocharger withvariable geometry (VG) has beendeveloped to meet stringentemission requirements, while atthe same time providing goodperformance directly from lowrotational speeds.14 Scania Parts Fact File - VG-Turbocharger

VG-TURBOCHARGER FACTSWHAT WE HAVE DONEHigh performance and low environmental impactToday's diesel engines have to meet increasinglystringent emission requirements. The turbochargerwith variable geometry (VG) is a sophisticatedsolution that continuously adjusts the intake areato the turbine. This is achieved electronically byattaching a control unit to the turbocharger. Thisprovides a wider range of usable rotational speedcompared with turbochargers with a fixed turbinegeometry. The VG turbocharger is able to meetstringent emission requirements while providegood performance at both low and high rotationalspeeds.1. Improved performanceThe Scania VG turbocharger has been developedto meet stringent emission requirements whilemaintaining performance. The VG turbochargerprovides improved performance over the wholespeed range without increasing environmentalimpact.2. Power from low rotational speedsThe Scania VG turbocharger quickly and efficientlyvaries the turbo effect regardless of engine speed. This provides ample power directly from lowrotational speeds and optimal fuel consumption athigh rotational speeds.15

SCANIA AIRFILTERClean air reducescostsScania air filters supply theengine with clean air, efficientlycleaning the air to the engine bymore than 99.9%. This results ingood fuel economy and a longengine service life. Using Scaniaair filters reduces downtime andmaintenance costs, it also extendsengine servicelife and improvesperformance.16 Scania Parts Fact File - Air filter

AIR FILTER FACTSWHAT WE HAVE DONEHandles large amounts of airToday’s trucks use approximately 36 cubic metresof air per minute for combustion.Regardless of environment and operation, thefunction of the air filter is to supply clean air inorder to extend engine service life. An air filtermust never be cleaned since this carries a highrisk of causing damage that cannot be detected.1. Developed for Scania vehiclesThe Scania air filter is unique and developedespecially for Scania vehicles. Our testing ensuresthe best possible performance. Patented sealsprovide protection so that no uncleaned air candamage the engine.Using defective filters leads to: Abnormal wear of parts such as slide bearings, pistons, cylinder liners and turbochargers. Increased repair costs. Lower engine power. Abnormally high fuel consumption2. High filtration capacity and low pressure dropScania’s air filters are optimised to ensure lowpressure drop. This means that less power is usedto draw air into the engine, which results in lowerfuel consumption. High filtration capacity alsomeans longer service intervals.3. The precise fit sealsEven the best filter cannot work without fullysealing against the filter housing. Scania hascarefully adjusted the dimensions and tolerancesof the filter housing, filter cover and filter in orderto achieve a precise fit.17

SCANIARADIATORMaximum engineperformanceScania radiators are designed towithstand the tough thermal stressesthey are exposed to and to maintain lowfuel consumption and provide the bestpossible engine performance.18 Scania Parts Fact File - Radiator

RADIATOR FACTSWHAT WE HAVE DONEOptimum operating temperatureNew emission requirements place increasing demandson radiator performance. Today’s engines must be drivenat a high temperature to meet the stringent treatmentrequirements.1. Maximum cooling outputScania radiators have been developed to provide maximumcooling, regardless of the operating conditions or climate.A condition for optimum performance is correct coolanttemperature for engine, gearbox and retarder. Cooling outputaffects fuel economy and engine service life. A efficientradiator reduces the use of the fan, which contributes tolower fuel consumption. Scania has developed a largerradiator as well as new pipes and vanes to further increasethe cooling output.Powerful engines place high demands on the coolingsystem. The engine has to work at the correct operating temperatureto be able to deliver maximum output. The coolant also has tomaintain the right temperature to ensure long service life forcooling system components and good operating economy. Inextreme conditions, there is a risk of the engine overheatingif the radiator is not working optimally. If the radiator does notcool sufficiently then damage may occur such as defectivecylinder head cover gasket, damaged valves or pistons, cracked engine block and cracked cooling hoses.2. Material selectionThe material selection in the radiator is very important forhandling the temperature load it is exposed to. The materialselection also determines how efficiently the radiator corecools the
