Reading for Analysisand Evaluation: To passthis unit learners haveto: read a written textand answer a range ofquestions AND listen toa spoken text andanswer questions.Assessed in class.Creation andProduction: Topass this unit,learners haveto: write anessay andcomplete a solotalk or groupdiscussion.Assessed inclass.Reading forUnderstandingAnalysis andEvaluation: Thispaper involvesreading anonfictionpassage (from anewspaper) andansweringquestions (30%of the finalgrade). Formerlyknown as thecomprehensionpaper and, later,Close Reading.CriticalReading: Partoneinvolvesyourchildansweringarangeofquestions on anextract of aScottishtextwhichyourchild will havestudied in class(20%). Part twoinvolvesacritical essay ona different textfrom a differentgenre(also20%).The Portfolio is madeup of two pieces ofwriting. One will bebroadly creative andthe other broadlydiscursive (worth 15%each).3COURSE ASSESSMENT Internal AssessmentsAll work on both Higher English units should be completed by the 25th of March.Pupils will not pass the course without passes in all four internal unit outcomes:reading, writing, listening and talk. Additional study support session will beavailable by appointment.It is also important that the folio for the Higher course be completed by studentsin line with SQA arrangements. Each student submission must be an ‘authentic’

representation of a candidate’s work. The following excerpt from the SQAarrangements documentation makes this clear.External AssessmentThe exam will consist of two papers. The Reading for Understanding, Analysisand Evaluation paper will take place 9-10:30 am Wednesday 8th May. TheCritical Reading paper will follow between 11:00 – 12:30 on the same date.Portfolio Guidelines Folio TemplateStudents work must now be submitted on a template. HomeworkIt is expected that the writing portfolio will be completed as homework.There will be regular homework tasks linked to literature being studied.Completion of RUAE and Critical Reading papers.Revision and preparation for assessments.Regular reading of both fiction and non-fiction texts.

5Home Support Provide access to quality newspapers and journalism Talk to them about the texts they are studying in class, ask them tosummarise the main events, tell you about the characters/ themes/ settings Ask to see their notes jotters- ensure that they have been making their ownnotes about their texts Allow them to research their texts online to find secondary criticism andother responses Put the news on at night and discuss current affairs- this will help withgenerating ideas for folio writing Encourage them to take a note of websites that they visit or books they readin preparation for their folio essays- it is crucial that they include abibliography to avoid plagiarism Ask to see their writing. Proof read it for them looking for any technicalerrors or typos.
