Dion Giarusso: Making Gonzo GoldPhotos: Combat ZoneWhen Combat Zone owner Dion Giarusso spoke toAVN in early 2006, he wasn’t sure what the fate of hisnew project would be. Four years later, it is perfectly clearthat Giarusso’s studio has become a leader in hardcoregonzo.Before his career in the adult industry began, DionGiarusso worked in the nightclub business. He says thatthis experience helped to teach him about people’s desireswhen it came to pleasure. In 1997, when Jake Maloneintroduced Giarusso to Patrick Collins, Collins offeredGiarusso a job at Elegant Angel. Giarusso was the generalmanager at Elegant Angel until he and brother DavidJoseph began Red Light district. Now leading his ownstudio, Giarusso oversees all operations at Combat Zone.Combat Zone is known for their wide array of “all naturalnewbies” and, of course, energetic hardcore sex.Giarusso’s philosophy is simple: Keep the faces fresh, thesex hot, and above all make your consumers happy. Thisconsumer-driven approach affects every area of CombatZone. From hand-picking directors for their talent to theongoing commitment to keeping costs low and quality high,Giarusso knows how to make movies that people want towatch and to buy.When asked how retailers can respond to competition withthe internet, it is this commitment to value that Giarussoadvises retailers take up. “Buy the best product at the bestprice and pass the savings on to the end user . nevertake the end user for granted.” Given that Giarusso starteda studio at the start of a huge economic recession andmade it thrive, his is advice that’s well worth taking.Within the industry, Dion Giarusso also maintains acommitment to his colleagues. Through his anti-piracyefforts and donations to the defense funds of those beingunjustly prosecuted, Giarusso shares the responsibilityfor keeping the industry afloat. In fact, when asked whatcareer accomplishment he’s most proud of, Giarusso didn’tname an award, or other recognition (though his companyhas had plenty); he said simply “I am most proud that I amable to still provide jobs in this troubled market.”In the industry’s future, Dion Giarusso sees companiesgoing further to protect their content. He also sharedthat in a perfect future, he’d love to see “less productout there. More quality, than quantity.” On the horizonfor Combat Zone, Giarusso’s plans are to broaden thecompany’s influence with an expansion into other cornersof the industry. “We are going to branch out into lingerieand novelties,” he shares. It’s a path many studios havealready taken to increase revenues. Juan Cuba: From Cubicle-Dweller to Porno DirectorJuan Cuba doesn’t see himself asyour typical porn director. “I camefrom a very poor family My parentswere immigrants. I never would havethought that this would have been thecareer for me It’s a dream.” AndCuba will be the first to point out thathis journey into the adult industrywasn’t a typical one. “I had no clue,no connections, [and] no friends in theindustry.” What he did have was hisgregarious nature and a long historyas a devoted fan. As we talked, Cubadescribed his unlikely transformationfrom cubicle-dweller to porn director.Before his career in the industrybegan, Juan Cuba worked at a callcenter. “I was in a fucking cubicle andgoing insane,” he tells me mid-day,from the parking lot of a coffee shop.After work, Cuba was renting pornseveral times a week. He continues todescribe himself as an “avid, avid fan”today. He says he’s in the industrybecause he loves women. “I loveeverything about them,” he tells me.It was while looking through an LAWeekly that a new world opened upto Cuba. A long time porn fan, hesaw an advertisement for Erotica LAand decided to go. “I was there withmy little 35mm camera and my littlebag standing in line like every otherschmuck. It was like Disneyland forme.” His industry career was about tobegin but he didn’t know it. Meetingone star set him on a path to a newlife.Cuba describes seeing Brandon Ironacross an aisle and going to talk tohim. “At first, he sort of tried to blowme off.” But Cuba, never at a lossfor words, continued to schmooze,explaining to Iron what a big fanhe was. “I started talking about myfavorite scenes, and girls he’d beenwith, and where they’d taken place;he was like ‘Wow, you really are afan.’” Iron, a fan-turned-pro himself,eventually invited Cuba to hang out.Hanging out with Brandon Iron, Cubamet Michael Stefano, who offeredhim a PA job. After a year workingtogether, Michael Stefano boughtCuba his very first camera. Foranother year, Cuba shot behindthe-scenes footage for Stefano. Allthe while, Cuba was itching to startmaking movies himself. “I felt ‘I knowI can do this. I know I can.’”his state of mind. “Because of porn, Ilive a healthier lifestyle. I used to feelguilty [for watching porn], and thinkI was a bad human being. I thinkpeople would be more at ease if theywould allow themselves to be sexual.”So Cuba asked his friend, performerMissy Monroe, to shoot a short realityPOV video with him. “I didn’t have alot of money,” Cuba said, “but I knewI could make something really good.”He showed the footage to Stefanoand Manuel Ferrara, who Cuba refersto as his mentors. They agreedthat Cuba had produced somethingworthwhile, but there were no jobsopen at Red Light District, whereCuba had worked with Stefano. SoCuba shopped his footage around andeventually found a home at ElegantAngel.When referring to his directorial style,Juan Cuba cites one of his heroes.“Like John Stagliano says, I shootmovies that turn me on.” Cuba’sother industry influences includeBelladonna, Jules Jordan, JoeySilvera, and Erik Everhard. So whatdistinguishes him as a director? “Onething about me girls love working forme. I’m fun. And I don’t tell peoplehow to fuck. The girls are the mostimportant people on the set. I treatthem like that.” The result of thissomewhat laissez-faire style is moviesin which the performers are clearly,genuinely enjoying themselves.“[Patrick Collins] loved it,” Cuba tellsme. “He gave me my first [directing]job.” Cuba directed six titles forElegant Angel before moving toHustler. Soon, a spot at Red LightDistrict opened, and Cuba returnedto the company where it all began forhim. He’s been there ever since.Since those early days in his career,Juan Cuba has made quite a namefor himself. His work has beenrecognized with a number of awardnominations, but the industry reallybegan to take notice of Cuba when,in 2008, he won Urban Spice (nowUrban X) awards for Red LightDisctrict/Candy Shop’s Alone in theDark 6 and Best Director (Gonzo).Still, Cuba says that the moment whenhe really knew he’d made it was whena band mate (yep, he’s in a bandtoo) was looking through a Hustlermagazine, stopped on the centerfold,and Cuba could say “Hey, I know thatgirl.”Cuba speaks of his job in the industrywith a gratefulness and reverence it’sunusual to encounter in any career.“Porn has helped me travel—to seethe world,” he says. In addition torepeated mentions of how lucky heis to be doing a job he loves, Cubaalso credits his career with improvingAsked about his feeling concerninggonzo versus more plot-driven porn,the gonzo director diplomatically said“There’s a little bit for everybody.Gonzo isn’t the only good porn.” Still,given free reign to make his dreammovie, Cuba would put out “An allfuck movie. All my favorite performers,every scene being different . I wouldlike to make one movie that’s like ‘thebest of sex.’ Everything. No genrelimitations. Whatever seemed right inthe moment.”Currently, Cuba is working on anumber of projects for Red LightDistrict, at least one video a month.He also tells me that he’s alwaystrying to “keep up.” “These daysyou’ve got to think about content goingon mobile devices and stuff—what itwill look like on those tiny screens.”Near the end of our interview, Cubaasked me to help him sound like “theCuban George Clooney,” but I’mnot sure he needed any help.
