The Universityof KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) offersprospective students the choice of fivecampuses, each with its own distinctivecharacter.EdgewoodThe Edgewood campus is the University’sprimary site for teacher education.Situated in Pinetown with easy accessto the N3 highway and approximately 20minutes drive from Durban, the campusoffers sophisticated and attractivefacilities to a growing number ofEducation students. A Choice of CampusesHoward CollegeDurban is a vibrant coastal cityrenowned for its beaches and coastalresorts. The city is also a major SouthAfrican port. The magnificent gamereserves and estuaries of Maputaland,north of Durban, are favourite getawaysfor staff and students. The HowardCollege campus is situated on theBerea with spectacular views of theDurban harbour. It was opened in 1931following a generous donation by Mr TBDavis, whose son, Howard Davis, waskilled during the Battle of the Somme inWorld War I.The campus is situated in asuccessful environmental conservancyand the lush gardens of the Universityreflect a commitment to indigenous floraand fauna. The Howard College campuscurrently offers degree options in thefields of Engineering, Law, Humanities(including Music) and Social Sciences(including Social Work), Nursing andArchitecture.Nelson R Mandela Schoolof MedicineThe Medical School has been producingquality doctors since 1950. Founded asa ‘black school’ in a ‘white institution’,for most of its history the School hasbeen synonymous with the struggle fordemocracy and racial equality. On its 50thanniversary in 2000, the Medical Schoolreceived the finest birthday present itcould have wished for – the agreement offormer president and Nobel Peace Prizewinner, Nelson Mandela, to link his nameto the School. Launched in July 2003, itis training a new generation of clinicalresearchers, enhancing the clinicalresearch infrastructure in KwaZulu-Nataland fostering collaborations betweenresearch groups working on similarprojects in South Africa and othercountries.PietermaritzburgPietermaritzburg is located in theKwaZulu-Natal Midlands, close tonumerous nature reserves and parks.It is one hour’s drive from Durban andtwo hours’ drive from the uKhahlamba/Drakensberg Park. The city has a richarchitectural heritage, with manyexamples of Victorian and Edwardianbuildings. The city is the birthplace ofthe former University of Natal and itsforerunner, the Natal University College,which opened its doors to 57 studentsin 1910. The Old Main Building is thehub of the present-day Pietermaritzburgcampus. How to ApplySouth African applicantsApplications via the CentralApplications Office (cao) All first time South African applicantsto UKZN for entry into degree/diplomastudy in the first semester (February)of an academic year (Grade 12’sas well as undergraduate transferstudents from other institutions) mustapply via the Central ApplicationsOffice (CAO). Obtain the CAO application formand CAO Handbook from the CAOOR institutions OR high schools.UKZN will mail forms in responseto requests received at: enquiries@ukzn.ac.za, the UKZN web, by phoneor letter. The CAO also has an onlineapplication facility. The forms have unique CAOreference/application numbers whichmust be quoted in all correspondence.The CAO system will generate a CAOnumber when you apply online. On theCAO application form you can apply tomore than one institution. Applicantsuse the same application numberfor all institutions. Application forresidenceaccommodationandfinancial assistance are also madeon the CAO application form. ForUKZN no further application formsare required. The CAO Handbook providesinformation on programmes available8 undergraduate prospectus 2015as well as information on minimumrequirements for application tospecific programmes. Applicants areallowed six choices which must belisted in order of preference. Applicants pay one application feeonly to the CAO, regardless of thenumber of institutions they apply to. If you apply before 31 October2014, the CAO application fee isR175. If you apply from 1 November 2014onwards, the CAO application feeis R400. Application fees are paid either:by crossed cheque or postalorder made out to the CAO onsubmission of applications OR bypayment at any Easy Pay facilityusing your application numberand Easy Pay number on theform as reference OR Internetapplicants can print a deposit slipquoting the CAO number for bankdeposits. Do not enclose cash. Completed application forms, proof ofpayment and documentation must bemailed to: Central Applications Office,Private bag X06, Dalbridge 4014. The CAO will confirm receipt of yourapplication by letter, fax or e-mailAND confirm your basic informationand your choices made AND provideinformation on special programmerequirements AND list outstandingdocumentation.

Application Procedures Check the information and informthe CAO in writing if you want tomake any changes to your programmechoices. A change of mind will requirepayment of an additional R100. Institutionswillaccesstheapplications via the Internet. UKZNmay make early/conditional offersbased on your National SeniorCertificate (NSC) results if alreadyobtained, or excellent Grade 11,Grade 12 mid-year or trial results. Themajority of offers may only be madeonce the NSC results are received inJanuary. The CAO advises applicants via SMSas soon as a decision has been made.UKZN will follow up with furthercorrespondence. Refer to page 22for information on UKZN selectionprocedures.
