One can becomea student of this university at any age as we consider education a life-long and continuousprocess. The University has a vast menu of educational program at different levels, startingfrom basic literacy program to the PhD program. The courses are regularly revised in order tokeep them contemporary, relevant, and internationally compatible. Self explanatory coursematerial helps the students to comprehend the course concepts without physical presence ofthe teacher. The self-assessment activities, included in the books, help ensure the acquisition of earning outcomes. Thisuniversity offers maximum number of specialization at post-graduate level through four faculties -- Faculty of Arabic andIslamic Studies, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Sciences, and Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities. ALLAMA IQBAL OPEN UNIVERSITYprovided necessary guidance by their respective tutors.Moreover, the university has established full time studycentres, wherein the students of MBA (IT), MBA (Bankingand Finance), BS (CS), BS (Chemistry), BS (Micro Biology)etc. are being provided instruction, guidance andcounselling through face-to-face education. AIOU isoffering four year under graduate degrees.Allama Iqbal Open University, a Mega university wasestablished in 1974 under an Act of Parliament. The maincampus of the university is situated in sector H-8,Islamabad. It was the second open university of the worldand the first of its kind in Asia and Africa. The aim ofestablishing AIOU was to provide affordable andaccessible education through distance learning at the doorsteps to those people who could not continue theireducation journey through formal system of education.AIOU operates on semester system and admits students inAutumn and Spring semesters. Under graduate admissionsare offered in both the semesters where as post graduatesprogrammes are offered once a year. The enrolled studentsare given course books specially prepared by the universityon self instructional principles. However at post graduatelevel reprints of foreign books, allied material withuniversity prepared study guides help students to polishtheir skills.Apart from curricular and extra-curricular activitiesduring the academic year, the AIOU and its regional centresactively participate in the co-curricular activities byarranging educational and literary seminars, workshops andconferences, attended not only by the students and facultiesof the university but also by the renowned dignitaries andscholars. For the science students and research scholars, ascience complex has been built where they use the latestequipment of international standard for experiments andresearch. To meet the present day challenges internet facilityis also available in the student's hostel and the CentralLibrary where computers have been provided to enablestudents to access latest information available through opensource databases.At present, the AIOU is offering programs fromMatric to PhD level in diverse disciplines comprises of fourfaculties. The university has established study centresacross the country, where distance education students are3

addition, there are many labs for practical work, teaching andresearch, and instrumentation labs for analysis.FACULTY OF SCIENCESFaculty of Sciences forms an important and integral part of theuniversity. Since its establishment in 1982 with five teachingdepartments, it has undergone major development changes. Itnow comprises nine teaching and research departments whichare offering courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate levelsto more than ten thousands students. The Faculty operates underthe basic guidelines of the University Act and on “Education forAll as Convenient” basis so that maximum students get benefitfrom its academic programs and educational facilities. Thisprinciple has necessitated some structural changes in the nonformal mode, particularly at the postgraduate level, in theoffering of theory courses and practical lab work.This conceptual adjustment has been quite successfuland many of its in-service students are benefiting fromthe postgraduate study programs. Improvement in qualificationsfor a better life is a right of everyone and the Faculty’s programsmeet this challenge by offering opportunities to all. In particulara significant number of beneficiaries are those who cannot affordeducation in formal institutions due to a variety of reasons.Two Model labs have been developed in the Research Complexwith the assistance of the Higher Education Commission to meetthe training needs of science teachers. This development issignificant for training of teachers since under the neweducational policy four-year BS program has started inundergraduate educational institutions.More than fifty highly qualified full-time faculty members are onthe roll of the Faculty of Sciences. Their role in the planning,designing and development of courses to meet student’s needs isvital. Faculty members also engage in imparting and supervisingof instructions so that high standards are maintained. In additionhighly qualified and experienced professors are also engaged oncontractual basis or as part time instructors for postgraduatestudy programs. The Faculty is also offering academic positionsunder the tenure-track system to attract the best minds inscientific and technological fields.Research is an integral part of the postgraduate study programsleading to MSc, MPhil and PhD degrees in Agricultural Sciences,Chemistry, Computer Sciences, Home and Health Sciences,Physics, Mathematics and Statistics. Rules and regulationsgoverning the postgraduate study programs are those approved bythe Higher Education Commission (HEC).Realizing the importance of science education and growing needs ofthe Faculty of Sciences, the University has completed a building,the Research Complex, at a cost of Rs 35 million. The ResearchComplex now accommodates departments of Agricultural Sciences,Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, Home & HealthSciences, Mathematics & Statistics and Physics. These departmentsare running a variety of postgraduate technical, scientific andprofessional programs successfully. The Research Complex alsohas a Computer Lab with Internet and On-line Library Facility forliterature survey, Seminar Room, Lecture Hall and Library. InThe Faculty has also launched BS program in Chemistry andMicrobiology from semester Spring 2009. The four-year BSprogram is structured according to the recent policies of theHigher Education Commission for the improvement of thestandard of education so as to bring it at par with theinternational standards.4

Multimedia Centre and Open Learning Institute of VirtualEducation (OLIVE) have been established at AIOU. In additionto research activities in the area of software engineeringcommunication, networking, and multimedia, the departmentfocuses on the e-learning research in instruction design,communication, course management, e-assessment, and otherrelated areas of e-learning.DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCEIntroduction:The Department of Computer Science was established in theyear 2000. The Department has received recognition nation-widedue to its quality education. The department had developedcurricula of the academic programs at various levels to meet thenational and international standards as defined by HigherEducation Commission. The curricula include PhD (computerScience), MS (Computer Science), BS (Computer Science) andPostgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Computer Science.BS (Computer Science) Programa) Introduction:BS (Computer Science) program provides a good mix of coursesin computer science, social science, basic sciences, management,and humanities. The BS (Computer Science) courses are aimedat core computer science field and include theoretical foundationand skills in computing and programming. The BS (CS)graduates will be eligible to apply for admission in postgraduatestudies in many international universities, since the BS (CS)curriculum meets the requirements of IEEE/ACM CurriculumRecommendations Committee. They will also be eligible to getadmission in the MS (CS) Program of AIOU.The BS (CS) is 140 credit hours program and may be completedin minimum four years (eight semesters). Two semesters areoffered in a year as Spring and Autumn. The duration of eachsemester is 18 weeks.The department is equipped with latest computers and servicesincluding a digital class room and multimedia coursewaredevelopment lab. The department has its own library in additionto central library of the university. The department practices themulti-method teaching methodology i.e. face-to-face regularclasses for BS (Computer Science) and MS (Computer Science).The online methodology is practiced for PGD (ComputerScience) AND Foreign Language (French). The facilities ofVideo/Teleconferencing are also in use for lectures/consultationsin research oriented degree of MS/PhD (Computer Science). Inaddition, the department also has a flavor of distance teaching inselected courses of BS (Computer Science) program likeEnglish, Pakistan Studies, and Islamic Studies etc.Note: The maximum time limit to complete the BS (CS)Program is Seven Years from the date of first registration ofthe student in this program.Besides graduate and undergraduate teaching, the department isactively involved in research and development. Khan using modern technologies.Under this program the course work will be conducted throughVideo Conferencing / Internet. Distance education will bedelivered by faculty members from Department of ComputerScience. A local Faculty member will be provided to assist inadministrative and teaching assignments. All assessments will beperformed as per rules of the university. 50% fee concession forUmer Kot and DG Khan BS(CS) students will be provided.c)EligibilityCandidates having intermediate or equivalent qualification fromany recognized institution with at least 45% marks.1.Applying/Admission ProcedureThe completely filled original admission form along with allacademic credential shall be submitted to concerned RegionalDirector at Umer Kot and D.G.
