Ribbon CuttingsJourney Home of Johnson Co.Honor DetailingBy Dustin Steinhoffdustins@warrensburgstarjournal.comBy Dustin Steinhoffdustins@warrensburgstarjournal.comThe Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony Monday, Feb. 22, to welcome Journey Home, one of the county’s two permanent homeless shelters, as a newChamber member. The Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon cuttingceremony Tuesday, Feb. 23, to welcome its new Chamber member, Honor Detailing.Honor Detailing opened its doors May 4, 2020, and provides exterior and interior vehicle detailing as well as power-washing forbuildings.Journey Home Board member Mary McCord said being a member of the Chamber provides opportunities for networking, publicity and obtaining community support, which all help JourneyHome provide its services to the community.Customers can come by their location for services, but the business also provides mobile services to the local community as wellas residents in locations such as Independence and Blue Springs.Journey Home officially opened Nov. 2, 2020, and is located at16 S.W. 265 Road, Warrensburg.Honor Detailing co-owner Joshua Murphy said he had planned toopen the business at the end of March 2020 and had alreadyplanned the grand opening, but the COVID-19 pandemic and stay-at-home orders pushed the business’ opening to May of thatyear. In addition to providing an emergency shelter, Journey Homeworks to connect individuals with health management and mental health management, help build job-seeking skills and helpobtain individuals’ missing documents.“We try to wrap other services that other people do around thatperson to help them meet whatever goal they have,” McCordsaid.Honor Detailing was initially located in a converted manual washbay in Knob Noster, but the business switched locations to its current address at 7 SE State Highway J, Knob Noster, in November2020.Journey Home Board member Erica Jones-Collins said sincethe shelter’s opening, the organization has been able to houseand transition 11 individuals into transitional or permanent housing.Murphy said the new location allows the business to remain openduring the winter months, which wasn’t possible at the previousone.Jones-Collins said those moving into transitional housing canstill receive services from Journey Home such as receiving assistance with budgeting, obtaining transportation, obtaining insurance and obtaining furniture.Murphy said while the old location only had one bay that wasopen to the elements, the new location has two bays as well asdoors to keep winter weather out as employees work on vehicles.“We’ve worked in 108-degree temperatures and we’ve worked in21-degree weather,” Murphy said. “When you’re working in elements like that, it’s actually very difficult to do certain types of details in those temperatures if you’re outside because blacks won’tadhere to a vehicle when it’s too cold, so you have to have it in amore controlled environment.” READ MOREThose wanting to support Journey Home can do so by volunteering and donating food, clothing and funds. Journey Homealso has an Adopt-A-Bed program where individuals or a groupof people can donate the cost of housing for an individual eachmonth, which is about 200. READ MOREwarrensburg.org7

Business ArticlesTIP: How to start an affinity group andwhy it makes sense now.TIP: How to effectively network in abreakout room.Merriam-Webster defines affinity group as “peoplehaving a common interest or goal or acting togetherfor a specific purpose.” In the workplace, it may becalled an “employee resource group.”This story of Gina Calder’s experience of building anaffinity group illustrates the benefits.Breakout rooms in “zoom calls” are often the networkingpiece of the event because it’s where more manageableconversations can be had. However, we recently experienced a breakout room where the person tasked with being the facilitator didn’t take charge. They expected thatwhen one person finished talking, someone else wouldspeak up. Breakout rooms need more direction than this.Ellen Keiley in an article, Are the rules different for virtualnetworking? offers some good advice if you end up in thefacilitator role.“Calder worked her way up in the healthcare industry (not known for its large numbers of women inleadership) with the help and support of her network. She realized that while ‘I benefited immenselyfrom that experience, I was kind of building thatmentor network myself’”. She created her affinitygroup because she “’wanted the opportunity to provide that kind of guidance and support and coachingto other people, especially women and women ofcolor and young women’”.How to avoid falling behind on massiveprojectsAs an icebreaker, “Suggest that everyone go around andintroduce themselves: who they are, what they do, andmaybe something brief about themselves, such as wherethey live, where their office is located, or a fun fact. Thegoal is to connect the dots with others and find commonground for conversation.”Remember, many people are reluctant to jump in and talkin these virtual settings, so take charge of the discussions. Use a technique that broadcast journalists usewhen they “toss” a portion of the show to another anchoror reporter. When you finish speaking, toss the conversation to someone else. Make sure everyone gets a chanceto participate.7 simple steps to create better boundarieswhen you work from homeIf you often find yourself having to push back deadlines, orwork a string of late nights to get it done, here’s what to do.These simple observations and changes may help you createbetter boundaries, even when that feels impossible. How to make the most of your remoteperformance reviewThese 5 apps take the pain out of wrangling your huge photo collectionTo put yourself in control of your career, you’ll need to learnhow to “manage up.” Leveraging your virtual performanceHere’s the easy way to sort, scan, sweeten, and share yourever-growing stockpile of snapshots.warrensburg.org21
