THE EV (Electric Vehicle) SYSTEMThe LEAF is an electric vehicle. Some of thevehicle’s systems operate differently andhave different operating characteristicsthan vehicles equipped with an internalcombustion engine. It is important to carefully review the entire Owner's Manual forthis reason. The main difference is the LEAFis powered by electricity. The LEAF does notrequire and it is not capable of using gasoline like a vehicle powered by a traditionalinternal combustion engine. The LEAF useselectricity stored in the lithium ion (Li-ion)battery. The vehicle’s Li-ion battery mustbe charged with electricity before the vehicle can be driven. As the vehicle operates, the Li-ion battery gradually discharges. Ifthe Li-ion battery becomes completely discharged, the vehicle will not operate until itis re-charged.This vehicle uses two types of batteries. One is the 12-volt battery that is the sameas the battery in vehicles powered bygasoline engines, the other is the Li-ionbattery (high voltage). The 12-volt battery provides power to thevehicle systems and features such as theaudio system, supplemental restraint systems, headlights and windshield wipers.EV-2 EV OverviewLI-ION BATTERYThe Li-ion battery provides power to theelectric motor (traction motor) that movesthe vehicle. The Li-ion battery also charges the 12-voltbattery.The vehicle must be plugged in for the Liion battery to be charged. Additionally, thevehicle system can extend the vehiclerange by converting driving force into electricit
