20213The Palm PressFROM THE OFFICEBy Laura Layne1. RULE REMINDERS: The rules very clearlystate that you are not allowed to go onto otherresidents lots without their permission and arecertainly not allowed to remove ANYTHINGfrom another resident’s lot without that resident’spermission. This is a very serious violation andwill not be tolerated. In addition to that, remember that not everyone in the community wantsanimals to come on their lots, defecate on theirlots, and most certainly do not want to pick upafter them. Please be respectful of your fellow residents, their lots, and theirprivacy.2. I appreciate all the hardwork I have seen from mosteveryone trying to get andkeep their lots free ofweeds. If you have notdone so yet, please makearrangements to do it orhave it done for you as finalnotices regarding those infractions are going out.the COVID restrictions which I have passed on tothe Park Association. I know everyone is excitedto see things begin to ease and some small eventsscheduled to take place, as are we. Please understand that these restrictions still apply: Masks arestill mandatory in all common areas other than the pool, 6 ft of social distance must still be maintained, and STILL NO GUESTSfrom outside of the park in any ofthe common areas. I expect theguest restrictions to ease withinthe next month or so and I willcertainly relay that information once we receiveit. I would expect, however, that masks and social distancing will remain in place for quite awhile yet to come. We ask that everyone be responsible in protecting yourselves and your fellow residents. As always, if you feel sick, pleasestay home.Park Phone Numbers: Office: (602) 9435833After Hours or Emergency: (602) 3. The Palm Press6AprilSENIOR LIFE—ExploringBy Allison HawleyIt’s the perfect time of year to get out and enjoy thisbeautiful weather while it lasts. Restaurants and otherspots of interest in Phoenix are re-opening and it’s agood time to (safely) get out of our homes and explore a little. Here are a few suggestions of places Ibet you will love as much as I do.THE DOWNTOWN PHOENIXFARMER’S MARKET721 North Central Avenue, Phoenix, en Saturday’s 8-12, all year around. rain or shine. This is my favorite Farmers Market in Phoenix duethe variety of vendors and goods, plus it’s just a funand relaxing place to spend a Saturday morning. TheDowntown Phoenix Farmer’s Market is an easydrive, parking is free and if you want to take yourbike, the light rail stops just a few blocks from themarket, so you can ride the rail to Central and Roosevelt and bike or walk a few blocks north on Central. The Market is in the parking lot of the PhoenixPublic Market Café, which alone is worth the trip.Along with vendors from several local farms sellingfresh organic vegetables and fruit, the Farmer’s Market has plenty to offer everyone with a great varietyof handmade artwork and jewelry, along with coffee, prepared meals and much more. Strolling throughthe open-air market on a Saturday morning is a relaxing and fun way to shop for your produce for theweek and maybe even come home with a new pair ofearrings!THE CLARENDON HOTEL AND SPA401 West Clarendon Avenue, Phoenix, 85013https://www.goclarendon.com/The Clarendon is a funky little boutique hotel in Central Phoenix with a rooftop bar offering weekend entertainment from flamenco to burlesque. The poolarea is one of the best in Phoenix with poolside service (from the amazing Fuego Bistro ResTaurant located inside the Clarendon Hotel) and large comfortable cabanas available for rent. After a day in thesun and a few cocktails, if you decide to get a roomthe prices in the summer cannot be beat (let themknow you’re a local for an even better price!)The Clarendon Hotel has some interesting historyattached to it and, if like me, you’re a long-timePhoenix resident you probably remember when DonBolles, a Phoenix reporter sadly lost his life in theparking lot of the Clarendon Hotel. On June 2, 1976, Bolles left behind a short note inhis office typewriter explaining he would meet withan informant then go to a luncheon meeting and beback about 1:30 p.m. He was responsible for covering a routine hearing at the State Capitol andplanned to attend a movie with second wife RosalieKasse that night in celebration of their eighth wedding anniversary. The source promised informationon a land deal involving top state politicians andpossibly the mob. A wait of several minutes in thelobby of the Hotel Clarendon (now known as theClarendon Hotel) was concluded with a call forBolles himself to the front desk, where the conversation lasted no more than two minutes. Bolles then exited the hotel, his car in the adjacent parking lot justsouth of the hotel on Fourth Avenue.Apparently, Bolles started the car, even moving a fewfeet, before a remote-controlled bomb consisting ofsix sticks of dynamite taped to the underside of thecar beneath the driver's seat was detonated. (You canread the rest at Wikipedia: Don Bolles - Wikipedia)JAPANESE FRIENDSHIP GARDENSOF PHOENIX (Rohō-en)1125 North 3rd Avenue, Phoenix s: Tuesday-Sunday from 10:00 until 4:00 (lastadmission 3:30). Closed May-August. General Admission 10/Seniors 8/Children 6 and under freeOne of the most beautiful and peaceful places in theheart of Phoenix, the Japanese Friendship Garden sitson 3.5 acres of land so nestled in tranQuility that youforget the busy world is outside the gates. Alongwith the many plum and maple trees, there are fourspecific terrains represented, all found in Japan:grasslands, forested mountain, stone beach andwoodlands. Relax, enjoy the serenity and don’t forgetto feed the Koi fish. Named as one of Phoenix’s(Con nued on page 7)Contact Allison at (602) 334-6328 or allijoblogs@gmail.com

The Palm Press10AprilROYAL PALM BLOCK WATCHCRIME PREVENTIONWe have seen a significant reduction in crime here atRoyal Palm. The reason for that is two-fold: ourPNP volunteers are out day and night keeping watchover us. Because of their presence, we feel betterabout leaving our homes and getting out in our community. As a result, more of us are out riding bikes,wAlking our dogs, or taking a stroll. Our presence isa huge deterrent for criminals and more of us meansless of them. Thank you, to all the Block Watch/PNPVolunteers for working hard to keep us safe.PNP/Block watch is always looking for additionalvolunteers. If you would like to attend a training session, register for an upcoming online class by emailing: pnp.coordinator@phoenix.gov.Senior Advice:Even duct tape can't fix stupid - but it suredoes muffle the sound. An Old Farmer’s Advice:The biggest troublemaker you'll probably everhave to deal with, watches you from the mirrorevery morning.Remember to call CRIME STOP at (602) 262-6151 ifthere is any sign of trouble. The PNP cannot confront a suspicious person, and neither should you.SOLAR LIGHTSIn addition to the Block WAtch patrolling our streets, the LED lights that have been added, especially to theback of our homes and the “dark spots” in the Parkare proving to be a great deterrent against crime. If you would like lights installed on your home, please contact Mike Padilla (602) 821-3411.
