client testimonialWhen I first came to Goodwill Industries, I began measuring successwith different numbers. Here, success is measured in the number ofpeople served; the number of individuals who transition from disabilityto self-sufficiency; the number of months or years rehabilitated workersretain their positions; and, finally, the economic impact these numberscontentshave on the community. While certainly not a for-profit company, Goodwill is still a businessin the truest sense of the word and must operate as such. So, when wedeveloped our five-year strategic plan, its design was based on traditionalbusiness models.Program & Course DescriptionsI was seeking to develop a professional staff, and while exploring myoptions for training, I was introduced to Furman’s Center for CorporateCommunication Skills . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 10and Professional Development. Communication SkillsInformation Sorting Styles for ImprovingProblem Solving and CommunicationsConstructive Argument and DebateDays: (half to full)Sean Patrick O’Rourke, Ph.D.Days: (1)Scott Simmerman, Ph.D.Each of us has preferences in how we think and handle information. These differences often lead to conflict or ineffective implementation.Use a simple model of “how people think” to improve communications and problem solving. Then, learn how to apply this same modelwith the work groups in your organization. This is NOT a programusing one of the complicated psychological instruments. InformationSorting Styles frames up thinking into a dozen easily understoodpatterns that clarify differences and suggest specific frameworksfor implementing improvement in the workplace.CommunicationSkillsWriting in the WorkplaceDays: (half to full)Sean Patrick O’Rourke, Ph.D.Communication in ControversyThis module is designed to supplement Sean O’Rourke’s courses onoral communication. In keeping with his general approach, this courseassumes that effective communication is an art of making appropriaterhetorical choices, and that one of the most important choices onemakes is selecting the most fitting mode of communication, oral orwritten, for a given message. Participants are taught that writtencommunication in the workplace should complement, supplement, and reinforce oral communication. They learn the criteria of effectivewritten communication, the writer’s seven deadly sins, and the elementsof informative and persuasive writing. Using these concepts, studentscompose and revise a policy memo, a statement of objectives, a missionstatement, and/or a draft proposal. The goals of this module are topromote clear and cogent writing, to deepen executives’ understanding of the place of written communication in professional life, and tofoster the effective interaction of written and oral communication.Policy PersuasionDays: (half to full)Sean Patrick O’Rourke, Ph.D.This is an advanced course in which participants skilled in publiccommunication learn the more refined art of persuading others onmatters of policy. Participants are given a framework for policy analysis(including basic assumptions governing policy change and debateabout policy adoption), study the stock issues common to all policyquestions, learn what constitutes good reasons for adopting orrejecting a policy proposal, consider the role of ethics and emotion inpolicy argumentation, and undergo strenuous practice in policy persuasion and debate (including making one’s case for change, defendingthe current policy, asking and answering questions, and practicingrefutation). This course is especially important for participants whoengage regularly in public hearings, internal committee meetingswhere policy is set, and/or public debates over company/agency policy, and whose work involves policy assessment at any level.10Center for Corporate & Professional DevelopmentFurman University864.294.3136www.furman.edu/cpdCenter for Corporate & Professional DevelopmentIn a pluralistic society, government agencies, small businesses, publicinterest groups, and corporations must be prepared to respondconstructively and creatively to the controversies in which they findthemselves. This course provides participants an introduction not onlyto the art of argument and debate, but also to strategies andframeworks with which they can strive to keep the debate fromdeteriorating into name-calling, shouting matches, diatribes, or eristic(argument for argument’s sake). Participants will study the rudimentsof argumentation and debate theory, practice constructive argument, learn appropriate responses to destructive argument, and practicedebate under the instructor’s guidance.Days: (half to full)Sean Patrick O’Rourke, Ph.D.This course is designed to introduce participants to the challengesof communicating ethically and effectively in the midst of often highlyvolatile conflict and controversy. Participants are exposed to theoriesof controversy and conflict management, provided with frameworksfor analysis of communication situations, and guided through theirpractice of communication in controversy. The goal of the programis to increase participants’ appreciation and understanding of thedynamics of public controversy and to empower them to communicateeffectively and ethically within those dynamics.Thinking on Your FeetDays: (half to full)Sean Patrick O’Rourke, Ph.D.This course is for the speaker who welcomes the very importantchallenge of learning how to think and speak clearly, cogently, andcreatively in the most demanding situations. More than a skill, thinkingand speaking on one’s feet is an art that requires people to understandand rapidly assess their rhetorical situation, their own abilities andpositions on the question(s) presented, and their options for response. If you have often found yourself thinking, long after the moment haspassed, of all the things you should have said (but didn’t!), this courseis for you. You will learn several ways to analyze and assess thesituation and your audience, an inventory for rapid appraisal of yourposition(s), and methods for determining your response. In addition, you will have the opportunity to practice “thinking on your feet”under the guidance of expert tutors.Furman University864.294.3136www.furman.edu/cpd11

Our concerns will include the range ofethical responsibility in human communication, the origins of ethicalstandards, the problems inherent in the art of ethical criticism, andthe strengths and weaknesses of the various perspectives on communication ethics. The goals of the course are to alert you to the moraldimensions of human discourse, to stimulate your moral imagination, and to explore, in theory and in practice, the questions raised by theapplication of ethical standards to persuasive speech. That being thecase, our time will be divided between reading and discussing theseissues on the one hand and observing and criticizing rhetoricalpractices on the other.Facing the MediaDays: (half to full)Sean Patrick O’Rourke, Ph.D.In today’s media-saturated society, leaders from many walks of life(government, business, education, law, etc.) must learn to face themedia and to do so effectively.
