Concentrated Solar Power Codes and Standards Gap AnalysisSTP-PT-054FOREWORDThe report provides an analysis of the ASME codes and standards that apply to Concentrated SolarPower (CSP) technologies to determine the gaps in the codes and standards and where there may beadditional codes and standards work required to implement and commercialize CSP.Established in 1880, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) is a professional notfor-profit organization with more than 127,000 members promoting the art, science and practice ofmechanical and multidisciplinary engineering and allied sciences. ASME develops codes andstandards that enhance public safety, and provides lifelong learning and technical exchangeopportunities benefiting the engineering and technology community. Visit www.asme.org for moreinformation. The ASME Standards Technology, LLC (ASME ST-LLC) is a not-for-profit Limited LiabilityCompany, with ASME as the sole member, formed in 2004 to carry out work related to newlycommercialized technology. The ASME ST-LLC mission includes meeting the needs of industry andgovernment by providing new standards-related products and services, which advance the applicationof emerging and newly commercialized science and technology and providing the research andtechnology development needed to establish and maintain the technical relevance of codes andstandards. STP-PT-054Concentrated Solar Power Codes and Standards Gap AnalysisABSTRACTNumerous concentrated solar power (CSP) facilities have been in successful commercial operationfor the past 25 years. Recently, government incentives and advances in cost reduction have broughtmany new players into the field. An accelerated deployment of CSP is currently being seenworldwide. Many of the developing technologies in CSP have failure modes and effects differentfrom those treated by existing boiler and pressure vessel codes. This study is a gap analysis to identifydifferences between the safety regulation needs of emerging CSP technologies and existing ASMEBoiler and Pressure Vessel codes (BPV). Six leading CSP technologies are examined. The safetyrelated failure modes of these systems are identified and compared with existing Code rules toidentify gaps in code coverage. Recommendations for actions to close these gaps are proposed.vi

When ex-posed to solar radiation, the medium heats up inside the absorber tube or solar tower and can subsequently trans-fer the heat energy it has collected to a storage system or through a heat exchanger to the power plant block. A solar power air compressor is not just a tank and portable generator looking device, but also needs solar power panels and wiring from the panels to your solar power air compressor. II. Solar Cell Solar power is the conversion of sunlight into electricity, either directly using photovoltaic(PV), or indirectly using concentrated solar power .
