Prepare & Submit YourProject Outcomes ReportPrepare and submit your Project Outcomes Report for the General Public onHow to UseFindReviewerson mes Reportis a briefsummary, preparedby the PrincipalInvestigator (PI) or Co-PI specifically for the public, describing the nature and outcomes ofthe project. Section 7010 of the America COMPETES Act requires that research funded byNSF report on the outcomes for the general public. These reports are available for publicviewing on Research.gov’s Research Spending & Results service on the bottom of the detailpage for the award.The Project Outcomes Report is: A new NSF reporting requirement effective for all awards made or existing awards thatreceive funding amendments on or after January 4, 2010 Prepared and submitted by PIs/Co-PIs through Research.gov Due by the end of the 90-day reporting period after award expiration Posted exactly as submitted by PIs/Co-PIs with a disclaimer noting that NSF has notapproved or endorsed its content.The Project Outcomes Report should: Briefly describe the project outcomes or findings that address the intellectual merit andbroader impacts of your work (200-800 words) as defined in the NSF merit review criteriaand covering the entire life of the award Be written for the general public using layman’s terms Include up to 6 images to creatively show your work (optional)Notifications to Submit Your PORPIs/Co-PIs will be notified of due and overdue reports via: Email alerts sent to PIs/Co-PIs, Sponsored Project Officers (SPOs), and NSF ProgramOfficers (POs) – exactly the same notifications as your annual and final reports FastLane Project Reports System under Project Report Requirements. Additionally, PIs/Co-PIs will be notified of due and overdue reports via: The Project Outcomes Report Dashboard on their Research.gov HomepageLogging into Research.govThe PI/Co-PI can access the Project Outcomes Report tool by logging intoResearch.gov at preview.research.gov. Additionally, you can navigate to this servicefrom: Project Reports System in FastLane (seamlessly connects you directly toResearch.gov), A link to Research.gov provided in the email notifications of due and overdue reports.To log into Research.gov:1. On the Research.govhomepage, select NSFUser from the Logindrop down menu2. Click Login3. On the NSF User Loginpage, enter your Last Name,NSF ID, and Password(same as FastLane ID andpassword)4.Click Login2

Preparing and Submitting Your ReportOnce logged in, you will seeyour Project OutcomesReport Dashboard, whichprovides the status of yourPORs (Due, Overdue,Submitted, and Not YetDue).1. Click on the ProjectOutcomes Report linkprovided on the ProjectOutcomes ReportDashboard to preparereportsNote: Also click this link when you return to edit saved reports and add addenda once yourPOR has been submittedThe Project Outcomes Report Pagewill show you which Project OutcomesReport s are Due, Overdue, Submitted,and Not Yet Due. Your reports aresorted by status.2.Click the link under the POReport Status column for theaward to prepare or edit asaved report23

Enter the report text of 200 to 800 characters in the text box providedPlease Note: You receive an error message if you submit a report with fewer than 200 or more than800 words You Can include hyperlinks to PI/Co-PI website You should continue to include citations with their Final Progress Report. They will beposted with Project Outcomes Report4. To upload up to 6 images withyour report, click Add an Image(see “Adding Images to YourReport” for more information )To preview your report before5. submitting, click Preview Report6. To save and return to your reportlater, click Save at the bottom ofthe report editing page7. To submit your report, clickSave and Submit at thebottom of the report editing pageNote: Once submitted, you have 30 days to edit your report. To view or edit a submittedreport, follow the same steps provided above. After 30 days you can add unlimitedaddenda (see “Adding an Addendum”).4

A confirmation screen notifies youonce your report has beensuccessfully submitted.Additionally, you will receive anemail confirming your reportsubmission.Note: Following submission, your report will be made available to the public the next dayon the award detail page of Research Spending & Results on Research.govAdding Images to Your Report1. Click Add an Image to add up to 6images to your report2. Click Browse to find and selectthe image to upload.Images should be: Oriented as landscape (widthis greater than height) Less than 8MB In one of the file formats:JPG, JPEG, GIF, PNG, TIFFNote: You must have copyrightpermissions to use an image.5

Fill in required information: Image title Caption (up to 300 characters) Credit Image Creation Date (optional)Check the Primary Image box to4. make image to be the main imageyou will see posted with yourreport.Note: If there are no images withyour report, this box will notappear and the image willautomatically be the primaryimage.5. Select the copyrightdesignation of your image: Copyrighted Public Domain Creative Commons Royalty-free (restricted usecannot be shared Royalty-free (unrestricted use) Copyright owner is an institutionwith an existing agreementallowing use by NSF6. Check the copyright release boxand click Save6

Adding an AddendumAfter the 30 day editing period has passed for a submitted report, PIs/Co-PIs can addimages and content to the report by adding addenda. Addenda should briefly summarizeadditional outcomes of awards and can be up to 800 words. Addenda cannot be editedonce submitted to Research.gov. Addenda can be added until the award record retires.On the Project Outcomes Dashboardon the Research.gov homepage1. Click the link to Edit/View Reportto add addendum to the report2. Click the AddAddendum button onyour reports page7

3. Enter the addendum text in thetext editor (up to 800 words))Click Add an Image to add up4. to 6 images (OPTIONAL)5. Click Preview Report topreview addendum6. Click Save to save youraddendum and return later7. Click the Save and Submit tosubmit addendum (oncesubmitted, addenda cannot beedited)Note: Following submission,addenda will be available to thepublic the next day along withyour report on the award detailpage in Research Spending &Results on Research.gov.8

View Your Submitted POR on Research.govSubmitted Project Outcomes Reports will be made available to the public the followingday through Research.gov’s Research Spending & Results service, included at thebottom of an award’s information page. Note that it takes up to a full day for reports to beposted.1. Click the ServiceOfferings link in theleft-hand navigationto expand this menu2. Click ResearchSpending & Results3. Find NSF award byentering: Federal Award ID Number PI/Co-PI name4. Click the Search9
