Crafting with the SaintsThe Saints of the Catholic Church are such an incredible gift to us! Theyhave gone before us and shown us how to live out the call to holiness in somany different ways. The most fun part of creating this book of patternswas to be reminded of just how different all of the Saints are. They notonly lived at all different times, they came from all walks of life. Somewere poor, others were rich or even royalty. Many answered calls to thereligious life, others were mothers and fathers. Some wrote great works, others were simply laborers. The uniting factor in all of their lives was Jesus. And Jesus is what unites uswith them still. This book of patterns can be used in a hundred different ways. Below Ihave listed some ideas. More than anything, though, I pray that this simplebook of patterns helps to bring the Saints alive for you! As you stitch orarrange perler beads, sit in the quiet and ask the Saint to be with you andpray for you.Ideas for Use Create a FAMILY SAMPLER of all of your Patron Saints.Stitch up special CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS for your loved ones thatfeature their Patron SaintsSet the kids to work on creating a NATIVITY SET out of perler beadsthat they can play with all season long.Share the patterns with your LITTLE FLOWERS GROUP or BLUE KNIGHTSGROUP and help children create images of their Saints that they cantake and put in their homes.Add a special HEAVENLY DETAIL to pillows or quilts by adding a Saint.Use the patterns in your ART CLASS to help children improve dexteritythrough cross stitch and learn a little bit about their favorite Saints.Create a little something special to hang on the wall of a nursery, given to families at BAPTISMS.Stitch up the CONFIRMATION SAINTS of those that are beingconfirmed.Create an IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY AND SACRED HEART OFJESUS to hang above your bed.Design and stitch a beautiful BIBLE BOOKMARK featuring your favoriteBible Character for a loved one.l 6 l

How to Cross StitchCross Stitch is the simplest form of embroidery. It is perfect for beginners, but also enjoyable for seasoned stitchers. In case you are new to theworld of cross stitch, here are the basics.Supplies Aida Cloth–this is special cloth for cross stitching. You can find it atany craft store, even Walmart. It is made in a variety of sizes and colors. I usually always use 14 ct, and 11 ct for young stitchers.Embroidery Thread–I use DMC thread which can also be found at anycraft store. DMC thread is organized by number, each specific colorcorresponding to a number. As you will notice the patterns do not callfor specific colors. Why? Because unlike complicated cross stitch patterns, these were created with simple color blocking. This means thatyou can simply pull out the colors you already have and start stitching!Or, if this is the first stitch project for you or your little saint, simply takethis book along with you to the craft store and pick out some colors youlike! Change colors, add colors, have fun!Needles--Since you are using aida cloth that already has holes, youdon’t need super sharp needles. Any standard needle should work fine.Embroidery Hoops–I always cross stitch with an embroidery hoop. Thehoop holds the fabric tight and makes it easier to keep the stitchesneat. This isn’t a mandatory supply, however. I use a plastic hoop forstitching and usually display my finished pieces in a wooden hoop.Masking Tape–Aida cloth, especially when handled a lot, tends to fray. Therefore, whenever I start a new pattern I cut my aida cloth biggerthan needed and place a strip of masking tape around each edge ofthe fabric. The edges of the aida cloth will be cut away when you aredone stitching.Pattern—I recommend printing it out or copying it. The digital copy ofthis book is included with this purchase, along with lots of other patterns that aren’t in the book. You will find all of these resources at catholicsprouts.com/CrossStitchSaintExtras.l 7 l

Getting StartedHere are just a few things you should do to make sure your project gets off onthe right foot! Find the center of your pattern, then find the center of your cloth and startthere. To make sure you aren’t going to run out of fabric as you stitch, always start in the middle. For the purposes of these patterns, use 3 threads for all cross stitches on14 and 11 ct cloth, and 2 threads for 18 ct cloth. 1 thread for all back stitches. Make sure that you don’t work with too long of a piece of thread. If thethread is too long you will end up spending most of your time wrestlingwith knots. I usually tie a knot at the end of my thread when I am beginning a newthread. You can also just leave a tail of thread on the backside of the fabric when you start and not worry about the knot. Instead, as you stitch, thethread will become tucked under the stitches. When you finish a threadsew a few times through the back of your stitching and trim. The StitchesCross Stitch is mathematical and precise, so take your time and make yourstitches look perfect. Here’s how: Cross Stitches are just that–an X. But, the X’s will only look good if youstitch all your X’s in an orderly fashion. Here’s how to do that. If you havea row of stitches all in the same color, start left and head right, stitchingjust the first 1/2 of each stitch, from the lower left corner to the upper rightcorner. When you reach the end of the row, doing just the first half of thestitches, turn around and stitch the second 1/2 of each stitch, from upperright corner to lower left corner. Back Stitches are also involved in several patterns, for wording or outlines. Back stitches are the simplest stitch, just straight lines. Generallyyou back stitch with only one thread. Make sure you don’t make yourstitches too long, as they will loosen with time. Any straight lines includedin these patterns are backstitches. Although no one will (likely) be seeing the back of your project, try to keepit neat back there! If you finish off a section of color on one side of theproject, tie off the string and start again, don’t stretch all the way acrossthe back. Doing this will make your back look junky and probably lead to aknot nightmare. Many patterns also call for French Knots. I recommend watching a videoon Youtube as they are a bit tricky and take some practice to master.l 8 l

A Few More Cross Stitch Tips Washing a finished cross stitch project is a pain, so instead wash yourhands before you begin stitching, every time.Make sure you have good light while you stitch.Always always double check your counting. It is, after all, called counted cross stitch. Being off by even one stitch in key areas can ruin aproject, so take the time and check your counting before you startstitching. And then count again. If you mess up, cut your thread, pickout your stitches and try again. And you will mess up. I always do.As with all my patterns, feel free to make adjustments to thread color. It’s your project after all!l 9 l

Perler Bead Saint ProjectsThese patterns can also be used for Perler Bead, or Melty Bead Creations. This can be a particularly fun project for children. The Saints they createwith these patterns will be large and fun to play with!Supplies Melty Beads-- Also known as Perler Beads, these can be purchased bycolor, or in a large tub with a variety of colors.Standard pegboard-- Pegboards are used for placing the beads. Purchase a rectangular pegboard, not one that is a circle or other shape. Also, these patterns are big, so you will need with either a super sizedpegboard, or a couple of square pegboards that can fit together toform a longer rectangle.Printed pattern-- Creating the Saints out of perler beads is a biggerproject and requires a lot of counting. I recommend copying or printingoff the pattern for children to use so that they can mark off the sectionsof the pattern as they are completed.Parchment paper-- Parchment paper is used to iron, or melt, thecreations once all of the beads are placed. The parchment paper isplaced between the beads and the iron.Iron-- Our family has a dedicated crafting iron since it is not impossibleto get some of the melty beads onto the iron and we would prefer notto transfer that to our clothes.Permanent Marker-- Since there is no way to “backstitch” with perlerbeads, you will have to add the smaller details with permanent markerafter the creations have been ironed.l 10 l
