METRIC SYSTEM

THE METRIC SYSTEMThe metric system is much easier. All metric unitsare related by factors of 10. Nearly the entire world (95%), except the UnitedStates, now uses the metric system. Metric is used exclusively in science. Because the metric system uses units related byfactors of ten and the types of units (distance, area, volume, mass) are simply-related,performing calculations with the metric system ismuch easier.

METRIC CHARTPrefixSymbolFactor NumberFactor ase UnitMeter, gram, 01ThousandthThe metric system has three units or bases.Meter – the basic unit used to measure lengthGram – the basic unit used to measure weightLiter – the basic unit used to measure liquid capacity (think 2 Liter cokes!)

The United States, Liberia and Burma(countries in black) have stuck withusing the Imperial System ofmeasurement. You can think of “the metric system” asa nickname for the InternationalSystem of Units, or SI.

HOW TO REMEMBER THE loHectoDecabase unit (gram, liter, meter)DeciCentiMilli

Large Units – Kilo (1000), Hecto (100), Deca (10)Small Units – Deci (0.1), Centi (0.01), Milli (0.001)Because you are dealing with multiples of ten, you do not have tocalculate anything. All you have to do is move the decimal point, but youneed to understand what you are doing when you move the decimalpoint.MR (move right) – moving the decimal point to the right means you aremultiplying.ML (move left) – moving the decimal point to the left means you aredividing. This is a process that once you learn it, you will never forget!! The bestpart is you won’t have to memorize any conversion values.Right/MultiplyLeft/Divide

EXAMPLE Change 2 Kilometers to meters2K ?mKidsHaveDroppedOverDeadConvertingMetricsKilo Hecto Deca Base Deci Centi MilliYou are moving the decimal point left to right 3 spaces; thatis, kilo to the base unit is three spaces over to the right.2 K 2000 mNote: When a number does not have a decimal point, it is understood to be at theend of the number. So 2 would be 2.0

EXAMPLE Change 25 millimeters to meters25 mm ? mKidsHaveDroppedOverDeadConvertingMetricsKilo Hecto Deca Base Deci Centi MilliYou are moving the decimal point right to left 3 spaces; thatis from milli to the base unit is three spaces to the left.25 mm .025 mNote: When a number does not have a decimal point, it is understood to be at theend of the number. So 2 would be 2.0

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN UNITS In the S.I. system, there is a relationshipbetween volume (liters), mass (grams), anddistance (meter). 1milliliter is the same volume as 1 cubiccentimeter. 1ml 1 cm3 Themass of 1 milliliter of water is approximately 1gram. 1L of water has a mass of approximately 1 kg

LENGTH The standard unit of length in the metric system is the meter.Other units of length and theirequivalents in metersWe symbolize these lengths asfollows1 millimeter 0.001 meter1 millimeter 1 mm1 centimeter 0.01 meter1 centimeter 1 cm1 decimeter 0.1 meter1 meter 1 m1 kilometer 1000 meters1 decimeter 1 dm1 kilometer 1 kmFor reference, 1 meter is a little longer than 1 yard or 3 feet.1 inch is 2.54 centimeters

VOLUME The standard unit of volume in the metricsystem is the liter.Other units of volume andtheir equivalents in metersWe symbolize these lengthsas follows1 milliliter 0.001 meter1 milliliter 1 ml1 centiliter 0.01 meter1 centiliter 1 cl1 deciliter 0.1 meter1 1 deciliter 1 dl1 kiloliter 1000 meters1 liter 1 l1 kiloliter 1 klFor reference, 1 liter is a little more than 1 quart. One teaspoon equals about 5 milliliters.Centiliter is notused. We would say10 ml, not 1 cl.

MENISCUS – RELATED TO VOLUMEWater molecules are attracted tothe negatively charged glass. Thisforms a meniscus. The definition of a meniscus is “Aconcave surface of a liquidresulting from surface tension.”The level in a graduated cylinderis read at the bottom of themeniscus.

MASSThe standard unit of mass in the metric system is the gram.Other units of grams andtheir equivalents in metersWe symbolize these massesas follows1 milligram 0.001 gram1 milligram 1 mg1 centigram 0.01 gram1 centigram 1 cg1 decigram 0.1 gram1 gram 1 g1 kilogram 1000 gram1 decigram 1 dg1 kilogram 1 kgFor reference, 1 gram is about the mass of a paper clip. One kilogram is about the mass of a liter of water.Centigramand decigramare not used.We would say100 mg, not1 dg.

TEMPERATURETemperature is expressed as degrees Celsius in the metric system. The boiling point of water (at sea level) is 100 Celsius, or 100 C.The freezing point of water (at sea level) is 0 Celsius.A hot day is about 30 Celsius. The following equations convert between Celsius and FahrenheitF9C 325C5( F 32)9

metric units. During Year 3 familiar metric units are introduced for length, mass and capacity. Working with metric units is extended in Year 4 to include familiar metric units for area and volume. Familiar metric units are metric units that would most commonly be experienced by

Metric System The basic unit of length in the metric system in the meter and is represented by a lowercase m. Mass refers to the amount of matter in an object. The base unit of mass in the metric system is the gram and is represented by g. Volume is the amount of space an object takes up. The base unit of volume in the metric system in the liter .
