WASHER SAFETY2

WHAT’S NEW UNDER THE LID?Cleaning with Less WaterAutomatic Load Size SensingOnce you start the cycle, the washer will fill to the water level. When the washer is done filling, it will start to agitate after itdetermines the correct level for the load. The washer will thenfill to the appropriate water level based on the load size.WashplateThis low-water wash method uses less water and energy comparedto a traditional agitator-style washer.Choosing the Right DetergentTraditional agitator-stylewasherWasher with low-waterwashplate wash systemThe most striking difference in your new washer is the low-waterwashplate wash system. The washer automatically adjusts thewater level to the load size. No water-level selector is needed.Use only High Efficiency detergents. The package will bemarked “HE” or “High Efficiency.” Low-water washing createsexcessive sudsing with a regular non-HE detergent. Using regulardetergent will likely result in longer cycle times and reducedrinsing performance. It may also result in component failures andnoticeable mold or mildew. HE detergents are made to producethe right amount of suds for the best performance. Follow themanufacturer’s instructions to determine the amount of detergent touse and do not go over the Max line. See “Using Laundry ProductDispensers” for more information.Use only High Efficiency (HE) detergent.Improved CleaningFor best performance, evenly load items in loose heaps around thewashplate.Low-water cleaning means concentrated cleaning. Rather thandiluting detergent as done in an agitator-style washer, this washerdelivers the detergent directly to the soils. This low water wash alsoallows the clothing to move in a more effective way to remove soils.Normal Sounds You Can ExpectAt different stages of the wash cycle, you may hear sounds andpauses different from those of your previous washer. For example, you may hear a clicking and hum at the beginning of the cycle asthe lid lock goes through a self-test. There will be different kinds ofhumming and whirring sounds as the agitator tests for load balanceor moves the load. Sometimes, you may hear nothing as the washerdetermines the correct water level for the load and allows the loadto soak.As the washer dampens and moves the load, the level of the itemswill settle in the basket. This is normal, and does not indicate thatmore items should be added.IMPORTANT: You will not see a washer basket full of wateras with your past agitator-style washer. It is normal for someof the load to be above the water line.3

CONTROL PANEL AND FEATURES123456Not all features and options are available on all models.Appearance may vary.1SOIL LEVEL2WASH TEMPSelect the setting most suitable for your load. For heavily soiledand sturdy fabrics, select Heavy Soil Level for more wash time. For lightly soiled and delicate fabrics, select Light Soil Levelfor less wash time. A lighter soil-level setting will help reducetangling and wrinkling.Wash Temp senses and maintains uniform water temperaturesby regulating incoming hot and cold water.Select a wash temperature based on the type of fabric and soilsbeing washed. For best results and following the garment labelinstructions, use the warmest wash water safe for your fabric. On some models and cycles, warm and hot water may becooler than your previous washer. Even in a cold and cool water wash, some warm water maybe added to the washer to maintain a minimum temperature.3WASH CYCLE KNOBUse the Wash Cycle knob to select cycles on your washer. See“Cycle Guide” for detailed descriptions of cycles.4EXTRA RINSEThis option can be used to automatically add a second rinseto most cycles.FABRIC SOFTENER ADDEDThis option must be set to “On” if using fabric softener.START/PAUSE BUTTONPress to start the selected cycle; press again to pause thecycle and unlock the lid.NOTE: If the washer is spinning, it may take several minutesto unlock the lid.4PROGRESS LIGHTSThe Progress Lights show the progress of a cycle. At eachstage of the process, you may notice sounds or pauses that aredifferent from traditional washers.SENSINGWhen the START/Pause button is pressed, the washer willfill to an initial water level and begin sensing to determinethe load size. The washer will then continue filling to theappropriate water level based on load size and proceed toWash. If the lid is opened or the START/Pause button is pressed, the cycle will pause. Closing the lid and/or pressing theSTART/Pause button will resume the cycle. If the cycleremains paused with the lid open for 10 minutes, the washerwill pump out the water.WASHCYCLE OPTIONSThe following options may be added to most cycles.56During the first stage of the sensing/wash cycle, water willpartially fill the washer and begin to move the load. It isnormal to have the sensing light on during this stage. Youwill hear the agitator rotate followed by a several secondpause. This process will repeat for several minutes, allowingthe entire load to become saturated. The lower waterlevel combined with HE detergent at this stage allows forconcentrated cleaning. It is normal for the load to be abovethe water line during this stage. At the beginning of thesecond stage, the washer will add water to the correct levelbased on the load size. You will hear the agitator increasespeed during this stage of the wash cycle. The motor soundsmay change at different stages in the wash cycle.

RINSELID LOCKEDYou will hear sounds similar to the wash cycle as the washerrinses and moves the load. You may hear the motor turningon briefly (short hum) to move the basket while filling. The Lock feature allows for higher spin speeds. When lit,the lid is locked and cannot be opened without pausingthe cycle. When the light is off, the lid can be opened.SPINTo open the lid after it has been locked, press START/Pause. The lid willunlock once the washer movement hasstopped. This may take several minutesif the load was spinning at high speed.Press START/Pause while the lid isclosed to resume the cycle. The washer spins the load at increasing speeds for properwater removal based on the selected cycle and spin speed.DONEOnce the cycle is complete, this light will come on.For best results, promptly remove the load.5

USING YOUR WASHER1. Sort and prepare your laundry Empty pockets. Loose change, buttons, or any small objectcan pass under the washplate and become trapped, causingunexpected sounds. Sort items by recommended cycle, water temperature, andcolorfastness. Separate heavily soiled items from lightly soiled. Separate delicate items from sturdy fabrics. Do not dry items if stains remain after washing, because heatcan set stains into fabric. Treat stains promptly. Close zippers, fasten hooks, tie strings and sashes, andremove non-washable trim and ornaments. Mend rips and tears to avoid further damage to items duringwashing.Helpful Tips: When washing water-proof or water-resistant items, loadevenly. Use mesh garment bags to help avoid tangling when washingdelicate or small items. Turn knits inside out to avoid pilling. Separate lint-takers fromlint-givers. Synthetics, knits, and corduroy fabrics will pick uplint from towels, rugs, and chenille fabrics.Always read and follow fabric care label instructions to avoiddamage to your items.2. Add laundry productsAdd single-dose laundry packets, Oxi-type boosters, color-safebleach, or fabric-softener crystals to the bottom of the washerbasket before adding clothes.NOTE: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to determine theamount of laundry products to use.3. Load laundry into washerLoad garments in loose heaps evenlyaround basket wall. For best results, donot pack the load tightly. Do not wrap largeitems such as sheets around the washplate; load them in loose piles around thesides of the basket. Try mixing differentsized items to reduce tangling.IMPORTANT: Do not tightly pack or force items into washer. Itemsneed to move freely for best cleaning and to reduce wrinkling andtangling.7

Using Laundry Product DispensersNOTE: Do not add single-dose laundry packets, color-safe bleach,Oxi-type boosters, or fabric softener crystals to dispensers. They willnot dispense correctly. Add to the basket prior to adding laundry.6. A dd liquid fabric softenerto dispenserFabric softener tray4. Add HE detergentHE removaldetergent trayAdd a measured amount ofHE liquid detergent into detergenttray. This tray holds 3 oz. (89 mL). Ifadding powder HE detergent, remove inside tray. Do not overfilltray. Adding too much detergent may cause detergent to bedispensed into the washer too early.NOTE: Make sure tray is in drawer when using liquid detergentand removed when using powder detergent. Do not go over theMax line.IMPORTANT: Use only High Efficiency detergents. Thepackage will be marked “HE” or “High Efficiency.” Low-waterwashing creates excessive sudsing with a regular non-HEdetergent. Using regular detergent will likely result in longercycle times and reduced rinsing performance. It may also resultin component failures and noticeable mold or mildew. HEdetergents are made to produce the right amount of suds forthe best performance. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions todetermine the amount of detergent to use.HELPFUL TIP: See “Washer Maintenance” for recommendedmethod of cleaning washer dispenser trays.5.Pour a measured amount of liquid fabricsoftener into tray; always follow manufacturer’sdirections for correct amount of fabric softenerbased on your load size. Close dispenserdrawer, then select Fabric Softener - On option.Fabric Softener is added during rinse.IMPORTANT: Fabric Softener option must be selectedto ensure proper distribution at correct time in cycle. Do notoverfill or dilute. Overfilling dispenser will cause fabric softenerto immediately dispense into washer. If Extra Rinse option is selected, fabric softener will bedispensed into the last rinse. It is normal for a small amount of water to remain in thedispenser at the end of a cycle.7. Select cycleAdd liquid chlorine bleachto dispenserTurn cycle knob to choose your wash cycle. For moreinformation, see “Cycle Guide.”LiquidChlorine BleachDo not overfill, dilute, or use more than 1 cup (250 mL).Do not use color-safe bleach or Oxi products in the samecycle with liquid chlorine bleach.8
