Whenthe Cartanofamily movedto Springvillefrom ruralWaubeek in1878, a few ofthe older children were already married.(Photo: Internet)Once numerous, Cartanos have vanished from SpringvilleNo one named Cartano has lived in Springville for eightdecades, but in the late 1800s, there were many. The lastgrandchild in this area, Elfriede “Toni” Freshwaters, livedeast of Springville. She died over 18 years ago.The family’s story began with a wedding June 30, 1851,in Pottsville, Pa. Anton Cartano, 22, and Sophia CarolineKlein, 21, were from Obermoschel and Bischmisheim insouthwestern Germany. Anton’s father was Italian. Carolinegave birth to 16 children, but five died as infants.The first eight children who lived were John (baptizedJohannes for his paternal grandfather), Anthony (Dony),Jacob, Elizabeth, Charles, Louise, Daniel, and Anna. InMay 1869, when Anna was a month old, the family leftSchuylkill County, Pa., for Linn County, Iowa.After a year of living in Waubeek, they moved to a nearbyfarm. Richard, Mary Terace (Trace), and Lamburtis (Bert),were born. Meanwhile, the older ones started to marry. Thefirst grandchild, Carrie, was born in 1875 at Marion to Elizabeth and her husband, John J. Buxler.A grandson, John Guy, was born at Anamosa to Johnand Sarah Elston Cartano in 1878. Also that year, Charlesmarried Elizabeth Cavanaugh. They and the Cartano parents moved to Springville. The 1880 Brown Township cen-sus listed Anton as a saloon keeper, with six children ages6 through 17 at home.Jake married Lizzie McGonagle; they lived at Ireton, inSouix County, Iowa, and Goodland, in western Kansas.Daniel moved to Idaho, then Washington state. Bert went toAthena, Ore., to play pro baseball, and later lived in Seattle.Richard wed Jennie Campbell of Springville and became abanker in Monticello. (Toni Freshwaters was their daughter.) Trace married Nathan Embree, a creamery workerwho became a railroad depot agent.Dony worked at a Springville pool hall; he, Louise, andAnna were single. On Dec. 4, 1901, the father, Anton, diedat 73. Anna, 35, took her own life July 8, 1904. She hadendured chronic pain since being hurt at 14 in an unknownaccident. Louise taught piano lessons and sold Victrolas.The mother, Caroline, was bedfast two years with a brokenhip. She died March 27, 1923, at almost 93.Last survivor of the 11 siblings was Trace Embree, 86,who died Jan. 4, 1960, at Madrid, Iowa. She, her daughterIrma, and 10 other Cartanos rest in the Springville Cemetery. Today there may be hundreds of living Cartano descendants, but none around Springville.No SAHS meetings in July, AugustRemembering Toni FreshwatersThe Springville Area Historical Society (SAHS) will notmeet in July and August. Meetings will resume Sept. 12.At the June 13 meeting, Rick Heeren reported that anSAHS tour of the Masonic lodge hall might be possible,insurance permitting. Bev Franks showed photos of hermaternal grandfather and great-grandfather wearing theirMasonic regalia.Springville High School Class of 1947 memories, givenby Wava Peck Terry of Dubuque at the June 3 alumnibanquet, were read by Karen Taylor, historian. Bev reported on her Class of 1957 reunion.Don McShane donated check blanks inscribed MapleGrove (name of the Butler farm). Others present June 13were James Crow, president; Jean Schmidt, secretarytreasurer; Doug Beard; and Phil and Karen Randall.Toni Freshwaters was a petite, charming woman whobelonged to Monday Club, was organist and choir directorat the Springville Methodist Church, and enjoyed bridgeand golf. She dressed stylishly, had an impish senseof humor, and wrote lettersto the editor.Born Elfriede Lisle Cartano in 1902, Toni was theyoungest of Richard andJennie Cartano’s three children. At age 12 she lost hermother. Toni marriedGeorge Freshwaters in1930. Their children wereNancy (Mrs. William Darland) and Jack. Toni survived “Freshie” (as shecalled him) 24 years; shedied Dec. 5, 1998, at 96.AT LAST, HEADWAY is being made toward obtaining agovernment memorial for Robert L. Newman, a Springvilleman who was lost at sea Dec. 26, 1952, in the KoreanWar. The Knights of Columbus also helped with the ceremony. Pastor Rick Gail was a guest speaker along with the other 16members of the Springville American Legion, it takes this many people to have a successful flag retirement ceremony. The SpringvilleFire Department members do the actual burning of the flags. Therewere approximately 3,000 flags that were properly retired that day byfire (not burned). If you have a flag that needs to be retired, you maytake it to the Springville American Legion during normal businesshours. Flags are for sale at the Legion. Next year’s ceremony willtake place on Saturday, June 9th.
