Engineering Design ProcessTeach 1Names of student(s) teaching:Teach date:Teach time:Teach length:Title of lesson: Engineering Design Process(cont’d.)Source (Kit, Lesson, Page #):Concept statement/Main idea:Student teams are challenged to navigate a table tennis ball through a timed obstacle courseusing only the provided unconventional “tools.” Teams act as engineers by working throughthe steps of the engineering design process to complete the overall task with each groupmember responsible to accomplish one of the obstacle course challenges. Inspired by theengineers who helped the Apollo 13 astronauts through critical problems in space, studentsmust be innovative with the provided supplies to use them as tools to move the ball throughthe obstacles as swiftly as possible. Groups are encouraged to communicate with each otherto share vital information. The course and tool choices are easily customizable for varied agegroups and/or difficulty levels. Pre/post assessment handouts, competition rules and judgingrubric are es/view/ucd derbytool activity1Standards for the lesson:Plan and carry out fair tests in which variables are controlled and failure points are consideredto identify aspects of a model or prototype that can be improved.Generate and compare multiple possible solutions to a problem based on how well each islikely to meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.ObjectivesEvaluationWrite at least one question to match theobjective you listed or describe what you willlook at to be sure that students can do this.Write objectives in SWBAT formSWBAT apply the engineering design processto their obstacle course that will successfullyallow the ball to roll through it.1. Which of the following is NOT a part of theengineering design process?A) Redesign as neededB) Build a prototypeC) Research the problemJuly 2021

Step 1: Engineering Design ProcessLesson Plan TemplateD) Develop one solutionSWBAT discuss changes that were made totheir engineering design.2. What changes were made to yourengineering design plan after your initial run?EngagementEstimated time: 5 minutesDescription of activity: The teacher will have the students recall the Engineering Design Processand will demonstrate a video of Apollo 13 and the problem it had onboard. What the teacher doesThe teacher will have thestudents recall theengineering design processfrom Tuesday’s lesson. What the student doesThe student will recall theEngineering Design Processand will answer the teacher’squestions. After the students recall theengineering design process, the teacher will introduceApollo 13 and the incidentthat occurred onboard.Possible questions to askstudents — think like a studentand consider possible studentresponsesYou may have heard of theApollo 13 mission, do youknow what happened onboard the space shuttle? How important was it for thepeople at Mission Controland onboard Apollo 13?Do you think they agreed oneverything they were saying? The teacher will askquestions about Apollo 13and how the EngineeringDesign Process plays a role inhow the issue was fixed. How do you think theEngineering Design Processplayed a role in how theissues aboard Apollo 13 wasresolved?Resources needed:PowerpointSafety considerations:July 2021

Step 1: Engineering Design ProcessLesson Plan TemplateExplorationEstimated time: 25 minutesDescription of activity: Students will work in groups, with each member assigned to a specificobstacle, and will work together as a team to try to get their tennis ball to the end of theobstacle. Students are not allowed to touch the tennis ball with their hands and can only usethe given “tools’” that are provided. What the teacher doesWhat the student doesThe teacher will demonstratethe obstacle to the studentsand will give them 10minutes to design their planand to determine which toolswill be utilized to completetheir obstacle challenge. The students will discusstheir plans and write it out ontheir worksheet, and willdetermine which tools will beutilized.Possible questions to askstudents — think like a studentand consider possible studentresponsesWhy did you pick thosespecific tools? What tools will you use inyour redesign? What tools won’t you use inyour redesign? At the 10 minute mark, students will test their designidea and will have a minuteand thirty seconds tocomplete their obstaclecourse with the help of their“tools”.What worked well in yourinitial design? What did not work well inyour initial design? At the end of the explore, students will be told thatthey will have theopportunity to redesign. Theywill have 5 minutes for theredo and will have another 5minutes to test out their finaldesign.*NOTE: The competitionrules will need to be changeddepending on what suppliesJuly 2021

Step 1: Engineering Design ProcessLesson Plan Templateare used and how theobstacle is set-up.*NOTE: You, as the teacher, will have the opportunity todesign the obstacle coursePRIOR to your teach. However, for each miniobstacle within your lessonthere will have to be oneperson assigned to saidobstacle. Ex. If there is anincline, a ramp, a maze, and adrop then there will be fourpeople in the group witheach person assigned aspecific mini obstacle.Resources needed: Pre-set up obstacle course Tools WorksheetExplore Worksheet LinkExplore KEYCompetition RulesSafety considerations:Be careful with any sharp objects.Be careful with any heavy objects.ExplanationEstimated time: 10 minutesDescription of activity: Students will explain what worked well and what did not work well intheir design and redesign. What the teacher doesWhat the student doesJuly 2021Possible questions to askstudents — think like a studentand consider possible studentresponses

Step 1: Engineering Design ProcessThe teacher will have eachgroup explain what ”tools”worked well in their designand re-design. The teacherwill also ask what was themost difficult part of theEngineering Design Process.Lesson Plan TemplateThe student will explain theirEngineering Design Processand their design andredesign. What changes were made inorder to successfullycomplete the obstaclecourse? How many “tools” did youswitch out for the redesign? Why did you not make anychanges to your “tools”?Resources needed:The groups design and redesign processes, along with their results.Safety considerations:ElaborationEstimated time: 10 minutesDescription of activity: The teacher will connect the Engineering Design Process to situationsthat are used in everyday life. What the teacher doesThe teacher will ask thestudents to connect theirdesign and redesign toeveryday situations. Otherthan the Apollo 13 incidentwhere else would theEngineering Design Processbe a crucial factor withvarious people workingtogether? What the student doesThe students will connect theEngineering Design Processto real-life situations.Possible questions to askstudents — think like a studentand consider possible studentresponsesWhat common design andredesign concepts can youthink of?How important is a designand redesign concept? How many more redesignattempts do you think youwould need to havesuccessfully completed theobstacle course?July 2021

Step 1: Engineering Design ProcessLesson Plan TemplateWhy do things have to beredesigned?Resources needed:Power PointSafety considerations:EvaluationEstimated time: 5 minutesDescription of activity: Students will complete the evaluation quiz on their own and will turn itin when finished. What the teacher doesWhat the student doesThe teacher will distributethe evaluation quiz and havethe students complete thequiz on their own.The students will completetheir evaluation quiz on theirown and turn it in when theyare finished.Resources needed:Evaluation QuizKEYSafety considerations:July 2021Possible questions to askstudents — think like a studentand consider possible studentresponses
