MARCH 2021Valentine’s Celebration in a PandemicBy Connie GroganFor the past four years, the Attic Angel Intern Class of 2015 has had fun hosting a Valentine’s Party for AAPresidents. With a barbershop quartet and festive decorations, residents have tapped their feet, sang along andeven dressed up. Then there was a pandemic. Not wanting to forgo this celebration, the Class got together onZoom to brainstorm some alternatives and brainstorm they did. The results were wonderful. The abundantcreativity of class members kicked into gear.Sheree Paradise and Deb Cohn handmade beautifulValentine’s cards for each individual resident. With theassistance of classmates, Mary Goers and Consuelo Lopez, messages were glued inside and cards were placed indecorated envelopes. In collaboration with Colleenand the Activity staff, DianaVarner created Valentine’sthemed games for residents in each level of care. These games weretransported by the staff on carts that were festively decorated with hearts, balloons and more by Barb Seaman and Sue Haen.In addition to bringing joy to the residents, the Class wanted to show theirappreciation to all of the staff for their hard work during the pandemic.Heather Meyer led the team of Consuelo Lopez, Martha Martin, and Ellie hall. They each filled 50 gift bags with popcorn and tied them with red ribbon.Delwyn Keane created signs of gratitude for each bin of popcorn bags.Classmates that were unable to help cheered the others on. There was a senseof deep pride and appreciation for the chance to work together to provide joy toresidents and staff. After all, that is what Angels do. We have missed that.ATTIC ANGELCOMMUNITY1

Compared to a total electricity annualexpenditure of 312,314, that is a 5.5% savingswith our solar power. It is wonderful to be part ofa community that focuses on ways to enhance ourenvironment AND save money!AAPP Board HighlightsBy Mary Ann Drescher, PresidentThursday, February 11, 2021Fescue (low mow) GrassResidents Bjorn Thompson, Dennis Keeney andJon McCarthy presented the origin of the idea toconvert Kentucky bluegrass with fescue, and thepotential benefits to the Prairie Point community. The area the Committee is proposing to convert isthe perimeter of Prairie Point and the terraces onPleasant View Road, which is a total of 2.4 acres.Currently, there is an average of 28 mowings ayear, with fescue grass it would only require fourmowings a year. Switching to fescue grass, therewill be far less watering, and products such asherbicides and fertilizer would no longer beneeded. With the cost of the initial investment andreducing to four mowings a year the payback timeof the project would be five years. The Boardapproved the project in the budget for 2021-2022 tobe paid out of the Contingency Fund.Capital and Operating BudgetSolar Energy UpdateBy Mary Ann Drescher, President and Larry Long,Director of Plant OperationsWith the bitter cold we have been experiencing inrecent weeks, it is fun to report on the power of thewarmth from the sun. You may recall that we installed solar panels on the Apartment roofs in Juneof 2018, and on the Haven in June 2019. We nowhave a full year of the two sources to report upon.Certainly there are environmental benefits with thetwo systems cumulatively saving over 300,000 kgof carbon dioxide emissions, which is the equivalent of planting over 5,000 trees.CFO John Kaiser reported on the Capital andOperating Budgets. The Capital Budget (definedas items with a useful life that cost over 2,000 peritem, or multiple items that combined cost over 10,000) is 708,800, with 429,000 coming fromthe Capital Reserve Fund and 151,600 comingfrom the Contingency Fund. The largest cost itemis for unit refurbishments and the second largest isto finish up the insulation upgrade for theremaining 27 units. The Operating Budgetincludes an increase of 17 to the monthly fees, plus an additional 25 per month for the annualprovision to the Capital Reserve Fund for a totalaverage increase of 4.6%.ATTIC ANGELCOMMUNITY2
