6General notesOperator's ManualThis Supplement provides information on all theimportant functions of your AMG vehicle that areeither not described or differ from the descrip‐tions in the vehicle Operator's Manual. Thisinformation supplements or replaces the corre‐sponding sections in the vehicle Operator's Man‐ual. Under no circumstances does the Supple‐ment replace the Operator's Manual.This Supplement describes all models, andstandard and optional equipment for your vehi‐cle, as available at the time of going to press.Country-specific differences are possible. Bearin mind that your vehicle may not feature allfunctions described here. General notes###When driving on unpaved roads or offroad, regularly check the vehicle under‐side.Remove trapped plants or other flam‐mable material, in particular.If there is damage, consult a qualifiedspecialist workshop immediately.* NOTE Damage to the vehicleIn the following situations, in particular, thereis a risk of damage to the vehicle:R The vehicle becomes grounded, e.g. on ahigh curb or an unpaved roadR The vehicle is driven too fast over anobstacle, e.g. a curb, speed bump or pot‐holeR A heavy object strikes the underbody orchassis componentsIn situations such as this, the body, theunderbody, chassis components, wheels ortires could be damaged without the damagebeing visible. Components damaged in thisway can unexpectedly fail or, in the case ofan accident, may not absorb the loads thatarise as intended.If the underbody paneling is damaged, flam‐mable materials such as leaves, grass ortwigs can collect between the underbody andthe underbody paneling. These materials mayignite if they come into contact with hotparts on the exhaust system.# Have the vehicle checked and repairedimmediately at a qualified specialistworkshop.or# If driving safety is impaired while con‐tinuing your journey, pull over and stopthe vehicle immediately in accordancewith the traffic conditions, and contacta qualified specialist workshop.Qualified specialist workshopAn authorized Mercedes-Benz Center is a quali‐fied specialist workshop. It has the necessaryspecial skills, tools and qualifications to cor‐7rectly carry out the work required on your vehi‐cle. Occupant safetySeat beltsLimitations of the protection provided by theseat beltThe AMG sport seat and the AMG Performanceseat are designed for the standard three-pointseat belt. If you install a different multipoint seatbelt, such as a four-point seat belt, the restraintsystem cannot provide the intended level of pro‐tection.Depending on the vehicle equipment, there maybe openings in the seat backrest. These open‐ings have no function.& WARNING Risk of injury or fatal injurydue to modified seat belt systemsIf you feed seat belts through the opening inthe seat backrest, the seat backrest may bedamaged or may even break in the event ofan accident.# Only use the standard three-point seatbelt.# Never modify the seat belt system.AirbagsProtection provided by the side airbagVehicles with AMG Performance seat:depending on the accident situation, the side air‐bag can increase the level of protection for theribcage of the respective passenger in additionto a correctly fastened seat belt.9

12Driving and parking% To permanently shift the gears manually indrive program using the steering wheelgearshift paddles, select the M (Manual) set‐ting for the transmission.##To shift up: pull steering wheel gearshiftpaddle 2.To shift down: pull steering wheel gearshiftpaddle 1.* NOTE Damage to the engine due to shift‐ing up too lateThe automatic transmission does not shift upin manual mode even when the engine's lim‐iting speed is reached.The fuel supply is interrupted in order to pre‐vent the engine from overrevving.# Shift up before the engine speed rea‐ches the red area in the tachometer.If the engine speed is too high or too low, youcannot change gear using the steering wheelgearshift paddles. In this case, segments 1light up red.Glide mode functionWith an anticipatory driving style, Glide modehelps you to reduce fuel consumption.Glide mode is characterized by the following:R The combustion engine is disconnected fromthe drivetrain and the vehicle continues toroll.R The J symbol appears in the multifunc‐tion display.Glide mode is activated if the following condi‐tions are met:R The ECO start/stop function is switched on.R Drive program is selected with thedrive setting "Moderate" or "Reduced".R The speed is within a suitable range.R The road's course is suitable, e.g. no steepuphill or downhill inclines or tight curves.R You are no longer depressing the acceleratoror brake pedal.Glide mode is deactivated again if one of theconditions is no longer met.

In addition, otherdriving safety systems are switched off.# Drive on carefully.# Have ESP checked at a qualified spe‐cialist workshop.You can select between the following modes ofthe Electronic Stability Program (ESP ):R ESP ONR ESP SPORTR ESP OFFCharacteristics when ESP is activatedESP monitors and improves driving stability andtraction, particularly in the following situations:R When pulling away on wet or slippery road.RRWhen braking.In strong side winds when you are drivingfaster than 47 mph (75 km/h).ESP can stabilize the vehicle by intervening inthe following ways:R One or more wheels are braked.R The engine output is adapted according tothe situation.ESP is activated every time the engine is star‐ted regardless of whether ESP was in ESP SPORT or deactivated before the engine wasswitched off.If the ESP warning lamp flashes in theinstrument cluster, one or several wheels hasreached its grip limit:R Adapt the driving style to suit the prevailingroad and weather conditions.R Do not deactivate ESP under any circum‐stances.R Only depress the accelerator pedal as far asis necessary.13Characteristics of ESP SPORT& WARNING Risk of skidding if ESP SPORT is used incorrectlyWhen you activate ESP SPORT, there is anincreased risk of skidding and having an acci‐dent.# Activate ESP SPORT only in the cir‐cumstances described below.When ESP SPORT is activated, the å andÆ warning lamps light up continuously in theinstrument cluster.Select ESP SPORT when the vehicle's ownoversteering and understeering characteristicsare desired, e.g. on cordoned off roads.Driving with ESP SPORT or with ESP deactiva‐ted requires an extremely qualified and experi‐enced driver.If ESP SPORT is activated and one or morewheels start to spin, the ESP warninglamp on the instrument cluster flashes. ESP

14Driving and parkingthen only stabilizes the vehicle to a limiteddegree.ESP SPORT also has the following characteris‐tics:R ESP only improves driving stability to a limi‐ted degree.R ETS/4ETS traction control is still active.R The engine's torque is only restricted to alimited degree and the drive wheels can spin.The spinning of the wheels results in a cut‐ting action for better traction on loose surfa‐ces.R ESP continues to provide assistance whenthe brakes are firmly applied.R Crosswind Assist is no longer active.#ESP should only be deactivated in thefollowing situations.When ESP is deactivated, the å and warning lamps light up continuously in theinstrument cluster.Deactivating ESP has the following effects:R Driving stability will no longer be improved.R The drive wheels could spin.R ETS/4ETS traction control is still active.R Crosswind Assist is no longer active.& WARNING Risk of skidding if ESP isdeactivated% Even when ESP is deactivated, you are stillassisted by ESP when braking hard.It may be best to activate ESP SPORT or deacti‐vate ESP in the following situations:R When using snow chains.R In deep snow.R On sand or gravel.If you deactivate ESP , ESP cannot carryout vehicle stabilization.% Spinning the wheels results in a cuttingaction, which enhances traction.Characteristics when ESP is deactivated% Activate ESP as soon as the situationsdescribed above no longer apply. ESP willotherwise not be able to stabilize the vehicleif the vehicle starts to skid or a wheel startsto spin.If the ESP warning lamp lights up continu‐ously even when ESP is activated, ESP is notavailable due to a malfunction.Observe any information which is displayed inthe instrument cluster:R Indicator and warning lampsR Display messagesETS/4ETS (Electronic Traction System)ETS/4ETS traction control is part of ESP .ETS/4ETS can improve the vehicle's traction byintervening in the following ways:R The drive wheels are braked individually ifthey spin.R More drive torque is transferred to the wheelor wheels with traction.
