Risk-Based ThinkinginISO 14001:2015Risk Management / Analysis of Risk

Risk ManagementEvery version of the ISO 14001 standard has advocated riskmanagement and risk avoidance, but it has been implicit. The new ISO 14001:2015 standard explicitly expects organizations toidentify and address risks affecting compliance of products andservices, resulting in improved environmental performance.Besides identifying the risks, the new ISO standard expectsorganizations to address opportunities for improvements andcorrective actions based on the risk analysis.Note that while corrective action is a requirement of ISO 14001:2015,the concept of preventive action is expressed through a risk-basedapproach where risks are determined and actions to address risks andopportunities are taken. The standard does not require you to create a formal risk managementsystem. However, this risk analysis exercise is intended to outlineseveral approaches / options for the management of risk at yourcompany. To prepare for the change, it is time to begin understanding RiskBased Thinking and begin looking at your processes in terms of risks.Risk is the possibility of an event or activity negatively impacting theoperational or strategic objectives of an organization. When evaluating risk, it is helpful to address it using two (2) metrics orparameters:1. Severity (if harm happens, how serious is the event)2. Likelihood (what is the probability of a harmful event)Because this topic is so important, it will have an impact on your EMS.Risk-based thinking in ISO 14001:20152

Risk-Based ThinkingThe new ISO 14001:2015 covers Risk in a number of sections (e.g.6.1, 6.1.1, 6.1.4, 6.2.1). The objective of the emphasis on risk is tohave the organization, through its EMS, address uncertainty inprocesses that will affect the environmental performance at yourcompany. When addressing risk in your Environmental Management System, besure that you look beyond determining the "chance" that somethinghappens to "the effect of an uncertainty" on your business and EMSobjectives. There are five (5) attributes to enhance risk management:1. An organization should accept accountability for their risks anddevelop comprehensive controls and risk abatement strategies.2. Risk management should be a part of an organization's continualimprovement strategy. Organizations should set performance goalsand then review and modify processes as required. An organizationshould review and modify its systems, resources and capability /skills to ensure continual improvement.3. Identify and train individuals with accountability for riskmanagement. These individuals should have appropriate skills, have adequate resources to check and improve controls, monitorrisks, and have the ability to communicate effectively with all theinterested parties / stakeholders.4. Decision making within the organization should includeconsideration of risks and the application of the risk managementprocess where appropriate.5. Maintain consistent and periodic reporting to all interested parties ofthe organization’s risk management performance.Risk-based thinking in ISO 14001:20153

ISO 9001:2015 Overview ISO 9001:2015 Overview Risk-based thinking The concept of risk-based thinking is described in the Introduction of ISO 9001:2015. Risk is about what could happen and what the effect of this happening might be. Risk also considers how likely it is to happen. Risk is commonly understood to be negative. In risk-based thinking .

ISO 8402 was published in 1986, with ISO 9000, ISO 9001, ISO 9002, ISO 9003 and ISO 9004 being published in 1987. Further feedback indicated that there was a need to provide users with application guidance for implementing ISO 9001, ISO 9002 and ISO 9003. It was then agreed to re-number ISO 9000 as ISO 9000-1, and to develop ISO 9000-2 as the .
