Message from Kevin Quinn, Parish AdministratorDear FriendsJust like all of you, I have been struggling with the rollercoaster-like turn of events of the national healthpandemic created by the spread of COVID-19. The realities of managing the ups and downs, uncertainties, and momentary crises in both my personal family life and parish life over the past few months hasbeen, at times, exhausting and anxiety producing! However, I truly believe as though the light at the endof this strange tunnel is growing larger. I have accepted the reality that things will be different and haverecently began to see that some of those changes may actually be positive.I pray along with you for the worry of those who are sick and the sorrow of those who have already losta loved one to this virus. I recognize the gravity of the reality that in this moment of collective traumaand crisis, the negative effects are experienced much more drastically by those who are already vulnerable in our society— the elderly, those in poverty, those with disabilities, those in foster care or withoutsafe and loving family structures. I also recognize that there are also very remarkable responses unfolding, as we push ourselves not to be paralyzed by a state of despair. This health crisis continues to expose the extreme fissures in our society and the deep and abiding obligation that we, collectively, have to help society get things right as we move towards the future and thechanges that undoubtedly lie ahead.Like most other places, we (our collective community) are embracing the changes and are finding newways to be in community, to be together. And, at the same time, our hearts and minds reel as we witness the collective fall-out from the effects of the pandemic on our community. As your daily lives have become reconfigured to a degree, I ask how can you be more in control of thereconfiguration? It may be that social distancing isn’t quite the right frame for what we all need rightnow. We certainly need physical distancing, but we also need to imagine and act from places of socialcloseness and care. What if we recognized this moment as also a possibility of significant change? Is itpossible that we have a chance to reconfigure life towards the world that we want? What kinds of questions should we ask, what kinds of reimagining can we do together? We are all thinking about these big questions. We, the parish of Notre Dame de la Mer, also think abouthow we can support our Faith-Filled Community in this moment, and about our role in meeting some ofthe very acute needs of our members, schools, and families that are pressing and urgent in our localworld!.I hope that you and your loved ones are well, and I hope that you believe that we (The Parish Team)have, over the past few months, shown the ability to think outside the box and commit to you more thanever to do our work in a way that supports all in our community of faith. I ask that you be open to thechanges that will come along as we move ahead.Kevin2- 650

StewardshipAugust 30, 2020Stewardship Wisdomnd22 Sunday in Ordinary Time“What profit would there be for one to gain thewhole world and forfeit his life?” - Mਁਔਔਈਅਗ16:26St. Francis of Assisi once said, “Remember, youare what you are in the eyes of God, and nothingelse.” We often forget this Stewardship wisdomwhen we spend all of our time, talent and treasureto gain more of the world’s riches. We need to setour priorities based on God’s values and not thevalues of the material world.Parish InformationHoly Hour of IntercessionThe Youth and Young Adults Office at the Diocese ofCamden requested that parishes come together inIntercessory Prayers for our youth. Cut the footprints out, and askeach person to print on his or her foot one way he orshe will follow the way of Jesus this week.x To follow Jesus, to do the will of God, comes at acost. Invite family members to answer the question:When is it difficult for you to follow Jesus? Remindfamily members that with God’s grace and help, anything is possible.x Have each family member cut a cross from construction paper. On the crosses, describe a cross thatyou will carry for Jesus this week. Keep the crosses onthe refrigerator or in another prominent place in yourhome as a reminder of your commitment to Christ.Liturgy Corner.learn something new or maybe even become inspired !What is the Liturgy of the Hours?Have you ever noticed in old films a priest with a small black book? Most people assume this is the Bible, but it most likely is the Breviary. The Breviary is a prayer book that contains three psalms, a reading from Scripture, a response, and a prayer. The two major hours, Morning Prayer (Lauds) and Evening Prayer (V espers), include a Gospel canticle and intercessions. The Liturgy of the Hours, as theChurch describes them, is the extension of the Mass. It is another way to continue the Mystery of theLiturgy throughout the day.Although described as “hours,” each “hour” only takes about 15-20 minutes. The reason for using theword hour is to signify the different hours of the day in which the proper set of psalms and prayers areto be said. For example, you shouldn’t be praying Vespers at 9 o’clock in the morning. You should tryto match up the hours with the proper time of day.Prior to Vatican II, this was known as “The Divine Office” or simply “The Office.” This form of prayerwas excluded only for religious and priests. Ordained clergy then and even now are required to praythese “hours” by The Code of Canon Law (Church Law). Vatican II, however, recognized that the laity, meaning those who are not ordained, should also be encouraged to pray this beautiful treasure of theChurch.

Please contact the parish office for more information and to register for the class. Funerals: To be arranged with a priest and funeral director. Please call funeral home of your choice. Sacrament of the Sick: Anytime Marriage: Arrangements should be made one year in advance and prior to making reception plans. Spanish Baptism Information
