About the AustralianReading SpineThe Australian Reading Spine is a list ofclassic books and high-quality literature. TheReading Spine is a Talk for Writing concept, and is intended to form the core of a primaryschool read-aloud program, which can thenbe supplemented with additional readingmaterials. The Australian Reading Spine hasbeen developed by the DSF Talk for Writingtraining team, with input from Pie Corbett, and is based on Pie Corbett’s original Talk forWriting Reading Spine, published by Scholasticin the UK.This document is organised by academic yearlevel, from Kindergarten (Preschool) to Year 6.Books are listed by author surname in alphabeticorder. The listed order of books for each yearlevel is not intended to suggest the order inwhich they should be read over the course of aschool year; instead, the order of reading shouldbe at the teacher’s discretion. In addition to the core texts for the AustralianReading Spine, a list of ‘Honourable Mentions’is provided for each year level. The HonourableMentions include: books that appear on theoriginal Reading Spine, but not on the Australianadaptation; books that were short-listed forthe Australian Reading Spine; and books thatmay be interesting as further reading. TheseHonourable Mentions are intended to provideinspiration for teachers when selecting booksto supplement the Australian Reading Spine. It is expected that the books on the AustralianReading Spine will be read aloud to students bytheir teacher; however, students in older gradesmay also read these books independently, or aspart of book study activities.
