Executive summaryEvery enterprise is striving to adopt a cloud-first strategy - butmaking that happen is easier said than done. Until now, moving, scaling, building and deploying on clouds has caused a lot ofroadblocks and detours for IT teams.Google Cloud VMware Engine bypasses the challenges of movingand modernizing critical workloads to the cloud - enablingbusiness agility without risk, app refactoring or having to reskillyour teams. The service enables customers to seamlesslymigrate their VMware workloads from on-premises data centersdirectly into Google Cloud too. This paper will show you how you can deploy VMwareinfrastructure to Google Cloud natively and securely, givingyou access to cloud scalability and cost savings as well asdevelopment and management services from both providers- helping you build the future, faster than ever. What is hybrid cloud?Hybrid cloud is a cloud computing architectureconsisting of one or more on-premisesenvironments connected to a public cloud withorchestration between the two platforms.3

Why is getting to the cloud so tough for enterprise?Cloud adoption is driven by a desire for agility.Organizations want an infrastructure they can shapefluidly as their needs change, without being locked intoa fixed, costly and complex on-site environment. Theyalso want access to unique public cloud services thatallow for faster and more far-reaching innovation, andleverages artificial intelligence, machine learning andautomation. But if your enterprise wasn’t born in thecloud, getting there can be a challenge.CompatibilityThe cloud is a natural fit for new apps, but rewritingand refactoring existing apps to make them cloudcompatible is far more complex. It can be costly,error-prone and more time-consuming than mostenterprises have the patience for. Today, only a fewvirtual machines (VMs) exist in the top three clouds. The complexities of inconsistent infrastructure, policiesand tools also make it difficult to monitor, troubleshoot, network, secure, backup, audit, and establishcompliance and do many other typical enterprise ITsupport operations from on-premises to the cloud.Unsurprisingly many enterprise apps have remainedlocked into their fixed, on-premises infrastructures, slowing the path to growth, innovation, and newservice delivery.OperationsIt’s not enough to just move a workload to the cloud.Once you migrate, things can get difficult for IT teamsas they contend with the challenges of operating acrossmultiple environments. Many providers only deliver the bare minimum when itcomes to hosting VMware SDDC services. They installVMware on public cloud hardware and leave the jobof configuring, managing, and operating theinfrastructure to the enterprise. Inconsistenciesbetween environments mean organizations oftenstruggle to manage workload, policy and compliancecompatibility, as well as training training staff in the useof new and unfamiliar tools. As IT operators extend their remit beyond the datacenter their responsibilities compound. Withoutautomated capabilities these already stretched-thinteams can become mired in operational complexity.InnovationWhen it comes to delivering innovation, not all publicclouds are created equal. Modern IT teams are beingpushed to deliver the latest capabilities to developers,so that they can build new and better services at thespeed customers and competition demands.Access to Google Cloud provides developers withleading artificial intelligence, machine learning (ML), bigdata analytics solutions they can use to drive innovation. However, without consistency between environments, developers often get caught in operational bottlenecks, unable to access the services they need, when theyneed them.4

What you need tosucceed in the cloudEnterprises need a specific set ofcapabilities that removes operationalcomplexity and provides speed andfluidity to developers so that they canbuild the future. You need a solution that delivers:Operational continuityThe same operation, support, monitoring andprocessing tools to manageboth on-premises and cloudenvironments, with seamlessAPI management - tomigrate without refactoringor reskilling.Unified networking andsecurity configurationsAccess toinnovative servicesThe same networkconfigurations, and security, compliance, monitoring andchargeback policies acrossenvironments, to ensure datais safe and compliant, whether at rest or in transit.Once running in the cloudyou need the ability to adoptthe latest AI, ML, automationand analytics services toquery your data and derivenew insights.5

Three key components for a smarter, more innovative cloudGoogle Cloud VMware Engine consists of three key components:Hybrid cloud infrastructureOperating SystemNetwork edge servicesDedicated, isolated, private clouddeployed on a hyperconvergedinfrastructure stack. This enablesyou to run VMware natively withinGoogle Cloud, along with back-endoperations and support for theentire solution, and separated via adata plane for additional security. The hybrid cloud managementplatform that orchestrates, automates, and maintainsavailability across the VMwarebare metal and Google Cloudinfrastructures. This is managedthrough a single managementportal, through which you canview both VMware and GoogleCloud environments.Enable communication betweenyour hybrid architecture and thepublic internet with advancednetworking and security capabilitiesprovided by Google Cloud.Google CloudGoogle Cloud VMware EngineDedicated VMware StackGoogle Cloud ConsoleVMware vCentreVMware Engine UIOn Prem VMwareVMVMware vCentreVMVMVMVMESXi geBilling, IAM, etc.NetworkGoogle Cloud ServicesStorage, Operations,BigQuery, Anthos, etcThird-Party ServicesZerto, Veeam, etc.Figure 2: Key components of VMware Engine.VMESXi HostsBare Metal8

Hybrid cloud infrastructureVMware partner ecosystem servicesThe dedicated, isolated, and private cloud abilitiesof VMware Engine, means that it offers a broad setof capabilities to drive business success andmodernization. The dedicated, isolated, private environment enablesaccess to the entire vSphere ecosystem of third-party ITmanagement tools, as well as the complete corevSphere platform and its default interface, vCenter. Thisallows you to access provisioning, monitoring, support, inventory management, backup and disaster recovery, security, network and IP address management, identitymanagement, and ticketing capabilities - all managedthrough a single pane of glass.Hot, cold and bulk migrationsComplete compatibility between the environmentsenables organizations to move on-premises workloadsto the cloud with standard VMware tools. In a hotmigration, you can use vMotion to transfer a live,powered-on virtual machine between data centers, clusters, or hosts without downtime. You can achievethe same function with a cold migration, moving thevirtual machine in a powered-off state. These twomethods work best for serial migrations. You can also use VMware HCX (included in the service),to schedule migration of workloads en masse usingreplication. After you replicate your workloads to a newenvironment, HCX will automatically power-off datacenter workloads and power-on the workloadsin your cloud.Google cloud innovationA dedicated VMware SDDC in Google Cloud means youhave high speed VLAN connectivity to innovativeservices. This is ideal for developing next generationapps that take advantage of Google Cloud’s servicesthat harness the power of Google’s big data. Forexample you can build and run AI and ML apps in thepublic cloud, while leveraging your database that resideson your dedicated cloud. With a single portal to both VMware and Google Cloudenvironments, application developers can build, manageand deploy their workloads directly in a self-servicemanner using tools they are already familiar with. Theycan perform power operations and configure them withthe appropriate amount of disks and network interfaces. They can also create additional VMs within the limitsof resources allocated to them by administrators. Forexample: developers may wish to deploy their webfacing app layers in Google Cloud where they haveconfigured a load balancer, auto scale, and public IPaddresses. This layer then has the ability to talkto databases deployed in VMware’s SDDC, establishingthe appropriate security rules between layers.9

Google Cloud VMware Engine OSThe service provides a cloud operating system and OSthat integrates services and innovations that optimizeVMware administration tasks. Key to this is provisioninga portal for self-service consumption, control andownership for Private Cloud resources. In addition, itserves to integrate Private Cloud and Publicconsumption in the same interface, thus fosteringhybrid application development. Finally, this integrationprovides direct access to backup services, eventlogging, and for monitoring the health, performance, availability, and capacity of clusters. For example, developers can use VMware EngineHybrid Templates to repeatedly deploy their applicationduring every stage of the application lifecycle: Dev,Test or Production.Rather than relying on a lower cost “secondary” storefor backup and archival data, VMware Engine targetscloud object storage directly, so customers can chooseredundancy and availability levels as appropriate, orconfigure their own automated tiering. You can alsoenable backup strategies for environments in theVMware Engine portal, integrated into Google Cloud andthen configure these with a plugin to the vSphere UI.VMware Engine also supports the most commonbackup tools used in VMware vSphere environments. The service establishes the level of probes and errorlogs best-suited for you, and enables continuouscollection of performance data so that issues can bedetected and resolved quickly. The OS also schedulescustom maintenance times for VMware upgrades andpatches based on customer convenience. Criticalsecurity or stability patches are performed with fullcustomer awareness and approval, and minimaldisruption to workloads. These capabilities ensure organizations can maintainand manage environments on an ongoing basis, withrole-based levels of access control configured betweenuser and administrators. The solution establishes theright access control levels for each of the 350 operations supported by the vSphere platform.Google Cloud Edge NetworkEdge Network enables communication between theinternet and your hybrid environment. It runs on GoogleCloud, leverages cloud edge security, and simplifiesnetwork setup and direct access to vCenter formanaging VMs.Edge Networking Services establishes access to thepublic internet using Google Cloud connectivity, andallows public IP addresses for virtual machines to bepublished with the right level of network isolationwithout having to configure many different systems anddevices. Google Dedicated Interconnect providessecure, high-speed connections to the public cloud fromon-premises environments.Edge Network also protects the traffic betweenworkloads and application layers flowing to/from VPN(supporting site-to-site or point-to-site), public internetand public IPs, and across all subnets andenvironments. This allows organizations to takeadvantage of Google Cloud’s edge network security andadvanced level of DDOS protection. The solution also allows you to maintain compatibilitywith existing vSphere network designs, including NSX-T,Port Groups and Distributed Virtual Switches, enablingeasier migration with minimal re-architecture.10

Bringing it all togetherMany enterprise cloud strategies involve both exiting expensiveon-premises data centers as well as digitally transforming theirprocesses. Taking advantage of these at scale means movingor redeploying to a public cloud.VMware Engine offers the only platform that provides amanaged, dedicated cloud in Google Cloud for VMwareworkloads. By providing a complete platform that incorporatesmanagement, networking, isolation, and high speedconnections to Google Cloud resources, VMware Engine givesenterprises a fast and secure way to meet their digitaltransformation goals on time.Google Cloud VMware Engine is verified by VMware.VMware and Google are trademarks of VMware and Google respectively. 2019 Google LLC 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA 94043.11
