Figure 1) in theInlet of the sprinkler. The glass bulb contains a fluid thatexpands when exposed to heat. Whenthe rated temperature is reached, thefluid expands sufficiently to shatterthe glass bulb, and the Bulb Seat isreleased. The compressed Spring is then ableto expand and push the Water Tube aswell as the Guide Tube outward. Thisaction simultaneously pulls inward onthe Yoke, withdrawing the Plug withSealing Assembly from the Inlet allowing the sprinkler to activate and flowwater.TFP550

Failure to use theappropriate fitting may result in one ofthe following: failure of the sprinkler to operateproperly due to formation of iceover the Inlet Plug or binding of theInlet Plug insufficient engagement of theInlet pipe-threads with consequentleakageDrainageIn accordance with the minimumrequirements of the NATIONAL FIREPROTECTION ASSOCIATION for drypipe sprinkler systems, branch, cross, and feed-main piping connected to DrySprinklers and subject to freezing temperatures must be pitched for properdrainage.Exposure LengthWhen using Dry Sprinklers in wet pipesprinkler systems to protect areassubject to freezing temperatures, useTable D to determine a sprinkler’sappropriate exposed barrel length toprevent water from freezing in the connecting pipes due to conduction. Theexposed barrel length measurementmust be taken from the face of thesprinkler fitting to the surface of thestructure or insulation that is exposedto the heated area. Refer to Figure 7 foran example. For protected area temperaturesbetween those given above, theminimum recommended length fromthe face of the fitting to the outside ofthe protected area may be determinedby interpolating between the indicatedvalues.Clearance SpaceIn accordance with NFPA 13, whenconnecting an area subject to freezing and an area containing a wet pipesprinkler system, the clearance spacearound the sprinkler barrel of Dry-TypeSprinklers must be sealed. Due totemperature differences between twoareas, the potential for the formation ofcondensation in the sprinkler and subsequent ice build-up is increased. Ifthis condensation is not controlled, icebuild-up can occur that might damagethe Dry-Type Sprinkler and/or preventproper operation in a fire situation.Use of the Model DSB-2 Dry Sprinkler Boot, described in Technical DataSheet TFP591 and shown in Figure 9,can provide the recommended seal.

TFP550Page 6 of 8InstallationWRENCH FLATENGAGEMENTAREATYCO Series DS-3 Dry-Type Sprinklers,11.2K Horizontal Sidewall, StandardResponse, Extended Coverage, Ordinary Hazard (ECOH) must be installedin accordance with this section.General InstructionsSeries DS-3 Dry-Type Sprinklers mustonly be installed in fittings that meetthe requirements of the Design Criteria section. Refer to the Design Criteriasection for other important requirements regarding piping design andsealing of the clearance space aroundthe Sprinkler Casing. With reference toFigure 10, do not grasp the sprinklerby the deflector. Failure to follow thisinstruction may impair performance ofthe device.Do not install any bulb-type sprinklerif the bulb is cracked or there is a lossof liquid from the bulb. With the sprinkler held horizontally, a small air bubbleshould be present. The diameter of theair bubble is approximately 1/16 in.(1,6 mm) for the 135 F (57 C) rating to1/8 in. (3,2 mm) for the 360 F (182 C)rating.A leak-tight 1 inch NPT sprinkler jointshould be obtained by applying a minimum-to-maximum torque of 20 to30 lb-ft (26,8 to 40,2 N·m). Higherlevels of torque may distort the sprinkler Inlet with consequent leakage orimpairment of the sprinkler.Do not attempt to compensate forinsufficient adjustment in an escutcheon plate by under or over-tighteningthe Sprinkler. Re-adjust the position ofthe sprinkler fitting to suit.Step 1. Install horizontal sidewall sprinklers with the center line of waterwayparallel to the ceiling and perpendicular to the back wall surface. The word“TOP” on the deflector must faceupwards toward the ceiling.Step 2. With a non-hardening pipethread sealant such as TEFLON appliedto the Inlet threads, hand-tighten thesprinkler into the sprinkler fitting. Donot grasp the sprinkler by the deflector(Ref. Figure 10).Step 3. Wrench-tighten the sprinklerusing either: a pipe wrench on the Inlet Band orthe Casing (Ref. Figure 1) the W-Type 8 Sprinkler Wrench onthe Wrench Flat (Ref. Sprinkler removal is easier whena non-hardening sealant was usedand torque guidelines were followed. After removal, inspect the sprinkler fordamage.mine the cause of leakage; for example,an improper installation or an ice plug.Close the fire protection system controlvalve and drain the system beforeremoving the sprinkler.Step 4. After applying a wall finish, slide on the outer piece of the escutcheon until it comes in contact with themounting surface. For Deep Escutcheons, slide the outerskirt over the inner cup to make firmcontact with the mounting surface.Care andMaintenanceTYCO Series DS-3 Dry-Type Sprinklers,11.2K Horizontal Sidewall, StandardResponse, Extended Coverage, Ordinary Hazard (ECOH) must be maintained and serviced in accordance withthis section. Before closing a fire protection systemmain control valve for maintenancework on the fire protection systemthat it controls, obtain permission toshut down the affected fire protectionsystems from the proper authoritiesand notify all personnel who may beaffected by this action.Absence of the outer piece of anescutcheon, which is used to cover aclearance hole, may delay the time tosprinkler operation in a fire situation.A Vent Hole is provided in the Bulb Seat(Figure 1) to indicate if the Dry Sprinkleris remaining dry. Evidence of leakagefrom the Vent Hole indicates potential leakage past the Inlet seal and theneed to remove the sprinkler to deter-Sprinklers which are found to beleaking or exhibiting visible signs ofcorrosion must be replaced.Automatic sprinklers must never bepainted, plated, coated, or otherwise altered after leaving the factory.Modified sprinklers must be replaced.Sprinklers that have been exposed tocorrosive products of combustion, buthave not operated, should be replacedif they cannot be completely cleanedby wiping the sprinkler with a cloth orby brushing it with a soft bristle brush.Care must be exercised to avoiddamage to the sprinklers – before, during, and after installation. Sprinklers damaged by dropping, striking, wrench twist/slippage, or the like, mustbe replaced. Also, replace any sprinklerthat has a cracked bulb or that has lostliquid from its bulb. (Refer to Installation Section.)The owner is responsible for the inspection, testing, and maintenance of theirfire protection system and devices incompliance with this document, as wellas with the applicable standards of theNATIONAL FIRE PROTECTION ASSOCIATION (e.g., NFPA 25), in addition tothe standards of any other authoritieshaving jurisdiction. Contact the installing contractor or product manufacturerwith any questions.Automatic sprinkler systems are recommended to be inspected, tested, and maintained by a qualified Inspection Service in accordance with localrequirements and/or national codes.
