INTRODUCTIONFounded in Torrington, CT, Borgeson Universal beganmanufacturing universal joints for lathes and milling machinesin 1914. By the 1920’s, Ford was using Borgeson universaljoints for the steering on some of their prototypes. BorgesonUniversal continued to develop and refine u-joints for industrial, aerospace and OEM vehicle applications. When purchased in1982 by the current owners, two avid Street Rodders, Borgesonsoon began developing applications for Street Rods. Borgesonhas continually improved and developed the original needlebearing universal joints into the most reliable, smoothestoperating, strongest u-joints available today.Seeking to expand, Borgeson ventured into manualsteering gears with the acquisition of Mullins Steering Gearsin 2001 and in July 2012 Borgeson acquired the originalequipment, tooling, drawings and the OE manufacturing rightsfor all Saginaw manual steering gear boxes. In 2016 Borgesonrelocated from its home of over 100 years in Torrington CT andexpanded into a new 101,000 square foot manufacturing facilityin Travelers Rest SC. This 101,000 square foot plant was designedand built for increased production and capacity to better serveour customers. We use the latest manufacturing and inventorycontrol procedures to maintain stock, and take great pride inbeing able to ship most orders placed by 1:30 EST the sameday. Today, Borgeson is the leading manufacturer and supplierof aftermarket steering components for the street rod, racing, specialty automotive, OEM and pickup truck markets. We believe our growth is based on a policy of honestyand always listening to our customers, whether you are acorporation or working in your garage. Ultimately, your vehicle’s safety depends on you. We striveto make Borgeson steering components as safe as possible. You can’t buy a stronger, safer u-joint anywhere in the world! However, its effectiveness is only as good as the installation. In this catalog, you will find many installationsuggestions and guidelines that will help in the design of asafe, smoothly operating steering system. Call if you have anyquestions. Our technical staff has over 95 years combinedexperience in the design and application of steering systems.Remember, auto manufacturers have thousands of engineersand millions of miles of road experience to rely on whendesigning a steering system. Without the benefit of thoseresources, the possibility of a malfunction is greater. So,overbuild your system and inspect it frequently. Safety shouldbe your most important concern! We attend many shows duringthe year, so stop by our booth and say hello, we’ll be happy tohelp! For sales and technical support, Call 860.482.8283Fax 864.610.2628 or visit www.borgeson.comA message from Borgeson president Gerry Zordan,Over 100 years ago, John Borgeson built a wooden universal joint model, dated July 22nd, 1914, for applicationto the United States Patent Office. This is the oldest Borgeson universal joint that we are aware of. His goal was to providehigh quality products at a fair price. 100 years later, that very same universal joint graces my office as a tribute to, andreminder of, where it all began. For the last 35 years, since I purchased Borgeson, we have been dedicated to the same philosophies of creatingthe best quality products at fair prices while providing outstanding customer service. This continued business modelhas helped us to grow from a humble four part-time employees all those years ago, to 35 full-time employees, proudlydedicated to providing high quality products and outstanding customer service. This growth and longevity is, in no small part, attributed to you, our valued customers. I thank you for thecontinued support and loyal patronage that has helped Borgeson Universal to become the great American company that itis today.Thank you, Gerry Zordan,President, Borgeson Universal Co. SINGLE NEEDLE BEARING UNIVERSAL JOINTSNeedle Bearing U-JointsNeedle bearing u-joints have the distinct advantage of lastingmuch longer than non-needle bearing u-joints. Borgesonrecommends only needle bearing u-joints for use on streetvehicles. Our u-joints are made of specially selected steel andstainless steel for strength and longevity. The sealed precisionneedle bearings never need maintenance. Needle bearingu-joints outlast non-needle bearing joints by a factor of 10 to 1. Ourneedle bearing joints have zero backlash (radial play) for moreprecise steering and a better feel for the road. Although nonneedle bearing joints are stronger than the same size needlebearing joint, this strength is offset by the maintenance requiredand the longevity factor. Non-needle bearing joints should belubricated with each use and a rubber boot should be used toretain lubrication. Boots are not recommended for use withneedle bearing joints.Borgeson u-joints are machined in our factory on state of the artCNC equipment from solid billet steel or stainless steel. Ongoingengineering and testing ensures our components meet orexceed current automotive production vehicle requirements.Any of our four Double D (a round shaft with two flats) sizes, 14different spline size yokes, and the ‘94 and later Mustang V stylecan be combined to mate components from many differentmanufacturers. They operate at angles up to 35 . Similar to OEMu-joints, the staked needle bearing caps prevent loosening andadjustment malfunction.Single Joint DimensionsSteelStainless SteelPolished Stainless SteelSINGLE UNIVERSAL JOINT PART #’SSteelStainless Steel Polished StainlessDescriptionSmooth X Smooth Bore0164641164641264643/4” Smooth x 3/4” SmoothSpline or DD X Smooth 1225641243641246641249641252641255649/16”-26 Spline x 3/4” Smooth5/8”-36 Spline x 3/4” Smooth3/4”-30 Spline x 3/4” Smooth3/4”-36 Spline x 3/4” Smooth13/16”-36 Spline x 3/4” Smooth11/16”-36 Spline x 3/4” Smooth1”-48 Spline x 3/4” Smooth17 mm DD x 3/4” Smooth3/4” DD x 3/4” Smooth1” DD x 3/4” Smooth3/4” Ford V x 3/4” SmoothSpline or DD x Spline or 8 Spline x 3/4”-36 Spline1”-48 Spline x 3/4” DD1”-48 Spline x 1” DD3/4”-36 Spline x 9/16”-26 Spline3/4”-36 Spline x 5/8”-36 Spline3/4”-36 Spline x 11/16”-36 Spline3/4”-36 Spline x 3/4”-30 Spline3/4”-36 Spline x 3/4”-36 Spline3/4”-36 Spline x 13/16”-36 Spline3/4”-36 Spline x 17mm DD3/4”-36 Spline x 3/4” DD3/4”-36 Spline x 1” DD3/4”-48 Spline x 3/4”-48 Spline3/4” DD x 9/16”-26 Spline3/4” DD x 9/16”-36 Spline3/4” DD x 5/8”-36 Spline3/4” DD x 5/8”-36 Chrysler Spline3/4” DD x 11/16”-36 Spline3/4” DD x 11/16”-40 Spline3/4” DD x 3/4”-20 Spline3/4” DD x 3/4”-30 Spline3/4” DD x 3/4”-48 Spline3/4” DD x 13/16”-36 Spline3/4” DD x 17mm DD3/4” DD x 3/4” DD3/4” DD x 3/4” Ford V3/4” DD x 1” DD1” DD x 11/16”-36 Spline1” DD x 3/4”-30 Spline1” DD x 13/16”-36 Spline1” DD x 1” DD1” DD x 3/4” Ford VMany other sizes are available. Double universal joints are available in steel, stainless steel and polished stainless steel. Borgeson doubleuniversal joints are available in all of our popular spline and DDconfigurations.TECH TIP:Because a double joint used in combination witha single joint will function the same as a three joint system, ashaft support bearing is required to prevent the shaft from“looping” and binding. VIBRATION REDUCERSNoise, vibration, and harshness are on top of the list ofconcerns for all automotive enthusiasts. With the morefrequent use of rack and pinions and low profile tires, thereare more road vibrations transmitted to the steering wheelthan in the past. Using urethane to isolate all of the metalcomponents, Borgeson has developed vibration reducers todiminish the annoying vibrations that are transmitted throughthe steering system and felt in the steering wheel. The useof the Borgeson vibration reducer results in an immediateimprovement of the steering feel. As an added benefit, thisreduction in vibration has been shown to increase the overalllife of the steering components, including the steering columnand box.DESIGN AND INSTALLATION TIP:Don’t install a vibration reducer in the center of a length ofshaft. It can cause excess flexing and possible binding. If yoursystem requires the use of a support bearing, the vibrationreducer must be used between the support bearing and thecolumn. The support bearing can pick up chassis vibrationand will transfer it up the steering shaft to the wheelreducing the effects of the vibration reducer.Rubber Coupling/Rag JointsOn older factory applications, a flexible coupling was used toattach the column to the steering box when there was perfectalignment. If the original column or box is changed, the stockcoupling may not work. If a conversion from a long inputsteering box to a short input with an aftermarket column isdone, a flexible coupling needs to be added. Borgeson offersthe largest variety of spline and double D sizes to fit mostapplications. black holes are fascinating objects where space and time become so warped that time practically stops in the vicinity of a black hole. Contrary to popular belief, there is a great deal of observational evidence for the existence of two types of black holes; those with masses of a typical star, and those with masses of a typical galaxy. The former type have measured masses ranging from 4 to 15 .
