LEADERSHIPArlene McAtee reflects on community leadershipArlene McAteeWhat is your educationalbackground?I have a B.A. in Communication Studies from the University of Iowa with an emphasis in Interpersonal andSmall Group CommunicationTheory. What is your professionalbackground?I began working with MidIowa Community Action, Inc.in 1977. Originally I was thepublic information officer.Since that time, I have beenplanning director, staff development director, associate director, director of the NationalCommunity Action Management Academy and probablyseveral other titles I’ve forgotten. I am now executivedirector. I’ve been responsible for all aspects of MICA’sservice and have been involved in national training andconsulting work within thecommunity action networkand for other non for profits.I’ve had the good fortune tobe able train in 44 states what a gift those experienceshave been. Most of my training and consulting work hasbeen on the design and implementation of family services, organizational managementandleadership. How would you describeyour leadership style?I believe in “mission driven”organizational life. I work tobuild an organizational culturereflecting MICA’s mission, vision and values. I strive togain as much staff, customerand community involvementas possible in defining our vision and the strategies toachieve it. I believe a leadershould hire the best peopleone can possibly find. Theleader should also guide thecreation of good policy, goodprocedures, good systemsand good processes. Fromthere, it’s a matter, as an organization, of learning everything you can about how wellyou’re doing and how to do itbetter. Combine great peoplewith great structure, then addlearning, continuous improvement and innovation to themix, and I think you have aformula for success. How do you encouragethose who work for/underyou?It may be a little easier in anorganization like ours wherepeople clearly see a connection between the work theydo and making a differencein the lives of individuals, infamilies and in the community. We attract people withthat desire. They’re prettymotivated to begin with. What responsibilities, ifany, do you feel leadershave to the community atlarge?Leaders often have access towww.marshalltownworks.commore information about ourcommunity and the peoplewho live within it. We’ve hada chance to grow certain skillsthat have wider application. If we’ve had those opportunities, I think we should sharethat which we’ve gained. Ireally believe those whoknow more and have morehave a greater responsibilityfor action. Also, from a moreselfish perspective, thehealthier our community, thebetter our organization canbecome. We want families tothrive, that is our mission, anda stronger, healthier community makes that outcome morelikely for more families. What is the advantage ofvolunteering for projects, events, etc.?The opportunity to learn, theopportunity to grow, the opportunity for deeper understanding, the opportunity tomeet great people, the opportunity to have a heck of a lotof fun. What advice would youhave for young people whowant to grow into positions of leadership?Be clear about what is important to you and what contribution you would like to makein the world. Challenge yourself to do new and differentthings whenever you can.Seek first to understand andthen to be understood. And,as Ghandi advised us, “Be thechange you want to see happen.’WHAT IS THE EASIESTWAY TO BUYAN AUTOMOBILE?www.kenwise.com24/73

There is a directrelationship between howmany words a child hears andthe economic status of thehome they are raised in.
