Chamber News April 20165Hans Gehman977 W. Main Street, Mount Joy, PA 17552620-2323 www.gehmanfurniture.com What made your family decide to open a fine furniture& interiors store? My Grandparents, Lester and MarthaGehman, opened Gehman’s Furniture & Interiors right nextdoor to our store in 1969 with the help of their children,Nancy, Leon and Laverne. My parents, Leon and Anna, began offering interior design services in the 1970s. As business grew, they moved to and restored a brownstone farmhouse along the Swatara Creek in Middletown, and openedHolly Tree Farm Interiors in the restored barn. My brother,Seth, and I grew up at this farm/store/home, but our parentsdecided to sell the farm and move back to Mount Joy in order to be more involved in our teen activities. After Seth andI graduated from Elizabethtown College, our parents invitedus to join them in the family business. Having served manycustomers from the West Shore over the years, we selecteda site along Route 15 in Mechanicsburg, and expanded froma home business to 37,000 square feet in 2002. Can you tell us what made you to decide to move yourstore from your previous location to Mount Joy? Duringthe recession, the furniture industry, like so many others, changed dramatically. Asian goods pushed consumer priceexpectations ever lower, and many American manufacturers and high-end retailers closed their doors. We developeda loyal customer base among those who still appreciatequality goods and American craftsmanship, but we realizedwe could conduct our business just as well without so muchoverhead, inventory and commute! So, once again, webrought our business back home to Mount Joy, settling intoa charming historic barn on the west end of Main Street. Do you offer more than furniture? In addition to furniture, we offer a highly curated selection of flooring, lamps, and paintings, with access to many more by special order. We also offer custom draperies and Hunter Douglas blinds. What services do you provide? In-stock items are available for immediate purchase, but we enjoy special ordering“The Perfect Thing” customized to your preferences. Thereis no charge to pick up your purchases, but we charge 99per trip for local deliveries. We have coordinated deliveriesto the Jersey Shore, Vermont, Florida and Hawaii. We canhelp you pull a room together with space planning and product selections, but we also work with local interior designers through our Design Trade Program.Eastern Mobile Wash donates time/equipmentA Big “THANK YOU” goesout to Chamber MemberGlen Bootay, EasternMobile Wash for againthis year donating stafftime and equipment toclean the playgroundequipment, bleachers andbenches at Rotary Park. 8Health Tip of the Monthfrom Norma Millard, RN,Certified Health CoachHealthy Exercise: What is it?First there is normal activity used aswe perform our ROUTINE daily tasks.Increase calorie burn by having goodposture, standing instead of sitting, doing things manually instead of usingmachines, taking stairs rather thanelevators, etc. Second, there is sometype of regular STRUCTURED exercise. When you choose your exercise, besure it’s something you will want to do!You are more likely to stay with it if youdo. It should be:1) Convenient. There’s nothing moreconvenient than lacing up your shoesand heading out the door or hoppingon the treadmill in your basement! Youdon’t need any excuses for missing aworkout!2) Enjoyable. Always hated running?Don’t start with running. Did you enjoyriding your bike as a kid? If you don’tlike your first choice, don’t give up! Findsomething you like.3) Pain-free. Nothing should hurtyou—not your equipment or your body.Be sure your shoes fit and your bike seatis right for you. Don’t work out an injuredbody part. Sometimes early on workedmuscles will be sore, and it’s actuallygood to continue your exercise so thatyour muscles don’t get stiff.4) Maintainable. If the thought ofwalking every day bored you to tears, change it up! Go skating, get on the bike, use a hula hoop. Changing it up every sooften will also help confuse the musclesand work some different ones. What about time and intensity? After you’ve found the right combinationfor you, go for time. On your first fewdays, work out for ten minutes. Whenyou feel you can go longer, add five.Continue to add five minutes until youwork up to a half-hour several days aweek, adding speed and difficulty toimprove results. Always increase inmanageable increments to create a newhealthy habit you’ll love forever! As soonas you reach one goal, set another. YOUARE YOUR ONLY COMPETITION! And youwill always win by becoming as healthyas you can be.For more information and a personalcoach, contact me at 717.314.4348 ornormllrd@gmail.comChamber News April 2016Milanof-Schock Library CelebratesNational Library Week - April 10-16On Thursday & Friday, April 20 & 21 there will be a veryspecial Family Story Time at 10:30 a.m. highlighting the OneBook Every Young Child (OBEYC) literacy campaign.
