HAMPSHIRE TROJANS, FRIDAY, August 27, 2021 5Rule seeks continued improvementfor Hampshire in his third seasonLed by Hott, Trojans have eyes on the playoffs with a favorable scheduleALEX RYCHWALSKIARYCHWALSKI@TIMES-NEWS.COMROMNEY, W.Va. — Between Hampshire head coach Aaron Rule’s first andsecond seasons at the helm, on paper, the Trojans’ two-win improvementdidn’t raise many eyebrows. But Hampshire was in more games, having chances to beat solid Petersburg and Berkeley Springs squads, andthe proof is in the pudding. The Trojans’ offense doubled its offensive output and its defense allowed 14.2 fewerpoints a night than Rule’s first year.Rule expects Hampshire’s upwardtrend to continue, though it won’t be awalk in the park. The Trojans must replace three-timeAll-Area first-teamer Trevor Sardo atreceiver, do-it-all punter, wideout anddefensive end Christian Hicks, andAll-Potomac Highlands offensive tackleSam Moreland, among others.Still, Hampshire is shooting for thestars, with Rule expecting the Trojansto make the Class AAA playoffs, a tripthat would be their first appearancesince 2003.Hampshire is hoping to set the tonefor its postseason push with a season-opening win against Preston atRannells Field tonight at 7 p.m.“I’m not doing my job if we don’tmake improvements year in and yearout,” Rule said. “We played better thantwo wins last year, there were a fewclose games that didn’t play out theway we wanted.“We have a favorable schedule thisseason, so with that schedule, I expectnothing less than making the playoffs.”In an effort to turn back the clockon Hampshire’s success, Rule hasbrought together an impressive coaching staff.Joining the third-year coach on thesideline is a pair of seasoned formerHampshire assistants in Ed Hardingerand Keith Lee.Hardinger, who recently retiredafter coaching the wrestling programfor 12 years, previously assisted longtime head coach Darren Grace and isin charge of the receivers and D-Line.Lee coached under both Grace and former head coach Sean Biser, and he’llcoach wideouts and linebackers.“They’re experienced guys buteverything is still a little new to them,”Rule said. “They’re used to coachingthe Wing-T, so the spread is a little different. They’re good motivators, making sure the players are working hard. They’re getting the best out of the players that they can.”Greg Gunter is back for his third sea-Ken Nolan/Times-NewsQuarterback Alex Hott (7) makes an adjustment as running back Stephen Leonard (42) listens during last season’s home game against Petersburg. Hott is entering his third season playing the quarterback position.son coaching the running backs anddefensive line.Drew Taylor, a former offensive lineman at Braxton County and GlenvilleState, will coach linebackers and theO-Line in his first season. He pickedup a wealth of coaching knowledge asa grad assistant at Glenville to RickTrickett, a former offensive line coachat West Virginia and Florida State. And Dave Mayfield is in charge ofthe secondary in his third campaignin Romney. Mayfield brings quite theresume to the sideline as a former AllBig East safety at West Virginia University and a Kennedy Award winner atMorgantown in 1989.As for the schematics, the baseoffense and defense at Hampshireremain the same. The Trojans will again run the spreadoffense with Air Raid principles they’veused in years past, but with a greateremphasis on moving the defense’s eyesthis season.“We put a little more in there everyyear as far as new wrinkles,” Rule said.“We have more formations, we try totake advantage of what new guys cando best.“The main thing we’ve added ismotioning a little more. It gives thateye candy for the defense, it gives themsomething to think about, looking oneway or the other.”Senior quarterback Alex Hott returnsfor his third year as the signal-caller, with sophomore Jenson Fields andfreshman Vinny Greear the backups.Hott was part of a three-man quar-terback competitionlast season, but theoffense is his now.He threw for 1,398yards, a PotomacHighlands-high, andscored 16 total touchdowns to earn honorable mention honors.A. HOTTRule said the key toHott’s success will betaking what the defense gives him.“He’s got to stay poised in ouroffense, stay patient,” the coach said.“Young guys just want to throw theball deep. He’s gotten better with that. When the short ball is open underneathSEE HAMPSHIRE — 9

HAMPSHIRE TROJANS, FRIDAY, August 27, 2021 9Ken Nolan/Times-NewsHampshire: For Trojans, offensive line is the most experienced unitCONTINUED FROM 5he’s hitting it.“We have to take shots to keep defenses honest and keep the corners andsafeties back, but you have to take whatthe defense gives you. I’m looking forward to another good season with him, another 1,000-yard, 2,000-yard year.”Senior Alex Pritts, junior Jacob Stauband sophomore Parker Kinser are thego-to backs entering the season.“They’re seasoned guys,” Rule said.“Parker Kinser is the best athlete outof the three. Pritts and Staub are northsouth runners, they do a good job ofrunning downhill. Ashton Haslackerwill get the ball back there too, whetheron jet sweeps, iso, power. We just needto get the ball in his hands.”When talking to Rule about Hampshire’s upcoming season, the nameHaslacker comes up routinely. After spending two years learning theoffense from a pair of top-notch wideouts, the junior receiver is primed for abreakout season.“He’s driven, and he’s developed wellin our program,” Rule said. “Playingbehind two great receivers like Sardoand Hicks over the years, he wants tomake a name for himself, get somelooks from college coaches.“He goes 100 miles an hour whetherhe gets the ball or not. He runs routeshard, blocks hard, we get the ball tohim on stretch plays. He’s willing to dowhatever it takes to win.”Haslacker and his 326 receiving yardsand two touchdowns will be accompanied by sophomore Zander Robinson, senior Cody Vandevander, senior AustinTaylor, junior Jonathan Moreland, sophomore Brennen Brinker and the Trojans’ backup QBs: Fields and Greear.Ken Nolan/Times-NewsRunning back Ashton Haslacker makes a reception during the second half against Petersburgat Rannell’s Field in Romney. Haslacker, a junior, will be used as a dual threat on the Trojans’offense.“They’re good possession receivers,”Rule said. “We’ve seen what routes theyrun best. On the flip side, we’ve seenwhich guys don’t run the best routesright now. So we know when to call certain plays to put them in the best position to succeed.”Keep an eye out for senior AustinEglinger during his first year playingfootball. A baseball player, Eglinger hasthe measurables at 6-foot-5, 215 poundsand big hands to be a breakout performer.“We have to get him on the field oneway or another,” Rule said.If Rule is at all concerned about theinexperience he has at the skill positions, then his offensive line will likelyhave a calming effect.Senior Zach Hill (6-4, 225) will suitup at left tackle; senior Connor Hott(5-8, 270) and junior Aiden Stambler(5-11, 230) are battlingfor the left guard job;senior Michael Gilman (5-9, 255) is thecenter; junior GrantHicks (5-11, 210) willplay right guard; andShawn Bennett (6-2,230) is the projectedstarter at right tackle, along with junior HILLNathan Sions (6-0,210).“With the experience they have there,if they go, then we go if they can create holes,” Rule said. “Hill moves fromright to left tackle with Sam Morelandgraduating. Gilman is seasoned at center, he makes the right calls. Hicks isseasoned too. I see us winning the battle in the trenches all year.”On the other side off the ball, Hampshire will employ the 4-2-5 defense onceagain. The Trojans have to replace a lot ofproduction. Defensive line mainstaysHicks, Moreland and Michael Chaneyare gone.Moreland was a machine, tallying 15tackles for loss and three sacks to earnAll-Potomac Highlands second-teamhonors. Chaney wasn’t too far off with11 tackles for loss.At linebacker, Nevin Ludwick graduates after tallying 45 stops during hissenior year, and first-team defensiveback Asher Landis moves on followingSEE HAMPSHIRE — 10

10 HAMPSHIRE TROJANS, FRIDAY, August 27, 20212021SeniorsSteve Bittner/Times-NewsFront row, left to right, Alex Hott (7), Alex Pritts (30), Austin Taylor (34) and Cody Vandevander (84). Back row, left to right, Connor Hott (72), Zachary Hill (75), Austin Eglinger (82) and MichaelGilman (76).Hampshire: Overall depth is a worryCONTINUED FROM 9a 59-tackle, six-pass breakup campaign.Though Rule is confident in his starting rotation of players, the Trojans can’tafford many injuries.“Our depth is what has hampered usright now,” Rule said. “The younger guyshave to step up and learn a little quicker.”On the line, Sions is the clear leader ofthe unit this year. The junior was a firstteam defensive lineman as an underclassman in 2020, making 46 tackles, three sacks and a forced fumble.“He makes a lot of plays, but he helpsothers make plays too,” Rule said. “He’sworked hard in the weight room, he’scoachable, does what the coaches teachhim with technique. He makes everyone around him better. He’s hard-nosedand goes 100 miles an hour like Ashton(Haslacker).”Hill and Jon Moreland are penciledin at the ends, with Stambler and Sionspacking a punch on the interior.“They look pretty good,” Rule said.“Coach Gunter is tickled. They knowtheir roles, when we’re stunting themthey fill the gaps. We’ve really emphasized hand placement this year, quickhands, getting your hips rotated. We’vegot to attack O-Lines to push them backand develop a new O-Line.”At linebacker, Hampshire will relyheavily on Pritts.Pritts made 58 tackles, 11 for loss, 1.5sacks and forced two fumbles last season. He’ll be joined by Staub as startinginside backers, as Kinser, senior BrianVagenos and freshman Bobby Springprovide depth. On the outside, Taylor and Robinsonare the likely starters, with Hott seeingtime there as well.“So far so good. They’re experienced,Zander (Robinson) is the youngest ofthe group, and he’s very physical. Taylor,Staub and Pritts do a good job of pluggingthe holes, reading the defense. I’m excited to see what they can do.”Back in the secondary, Haslacker is thefree safety, along with Fields and Greear.Hott and Brinker are expected to start atcorner, with Vandevander getting snapsthere too.“They’re learning. Coach Mayfield hasdone a good job working with them, trying to get the young guys to work on theireyes. They need to get better at eye discipline, route reading. But they’re physical,we just need to make sure nobody getsbehind us.”Either Taylor or Haslacker will bein charge of the punting duties; Vandevander or Brinker will do kickoffs; Vandevander is the placekicker; and a combination of Haslacker, Brinker, Kinser andVandevander are the return men.Alex Rychwalski is a sports reporter at the Cumberland Times-News.
