Operations ABS2014 EAAAirVentureOshkoshRecapby J. Whitney HickmanABS has been very visible to the member shipduring the last four months. First we were inLakeland, Florida, at Sun ‘n Fun, then hostedthe ABS Homecoming in Wichita, and we just finishedwith a great week at EAA Oshkosh. The next stop willbe Santa Rosa, California, for the ABS Fly-In and AnnualMeeting, September 11-14. These are my favorite eventsas we get to visit and talk with our members on apersonal level. We arrived in Oshkosh on Saturday morning just in timeto watch the B2OSH arrival from Rockford, Illinois. It’salways impressive to witness the Beechcraft mass arrivaland see them taxi to the North 40 to camp for the week.I am happy to say that 110 airplanes touched down withoutincident. Well done!At Oshkosh, 694 ABS members signed the register inour tent, an increase in attendance over last year by 66members. What a great turnout!Free popcorn, water, and soda were available at the ABShospitality tent. Members and guests were able to step outof the sunshine, rest their legs, meet old friends, make newones, and watch the daily air show. Attendance overall forthe EAA event was up six percent with a 20 percent on theweekend, according to EAA. I did notice fewer exhibitorsthan in past years, however, reports are saying exhibitorsdid very well. The USAF Thunderbirds performed FridaySunday. It was a great show and definitely helped boostattendance. Melissa, Tom, and I were available to answermembership and program questions, renew existingmembers, sign up new members, and sell merchandise.ABS Technical Advisors Bob Ripley and Curtis Boulwarewere very busy answering members’ technical questionsand participated in the member forums and seminars, whichwere very well attended.4Jay Burris, incoming ABS board member, greeting members at theABS hospitality tent.ABS hosted its annual dinner on Tuesday evening at theHilton Garden Inn. The dinner was co-sponsored by longtime ABS supporters D’Shannon Aviation and RAM Aircraft, with 310 members and guests in attendance. The eveningwas highlighted by ABS President Bob Goff’s presentationof a Beech painting to Dick Swenson, Life Member andlong-time philanthropic supporter of the ABS Air SafetyFoundation. Dick’s numerous contributions to ABS aregreatly appreciated. Accepting on Dick’s behalf was ABSmember Jim Usher. Thank you, Dick, for your generoussupport in memory of BPPP founder Sam James.AMERICAN BONANZA SOCIETYSEPTEMBER 2014

On the drive to go see one particular airplane,my mother nonchalantly said to my father, “If it’s red, buy it.”I am sure angels could be heard singing and a warm glow emanated frombehind that V-tail as the hangar doors slid open to reveal – in all its redness –what would become a member of the family for 50 years.10AMERICAN BONANZA SOCIETYSEPTEMBER 2014

N5050X and I goway back. Fifty X came into the familyfive years before me, in August of 1964.I had my first airplane ride in this veryairplane when I was two weeks old. It’sonly fitting to commemorate its 50thyear in the family with a “Beechcraftof the Month” submission.N5050X left the factory as N1879D.It was purchased by the HeathkitCompany in Benton Harbor, Michigan, through 1930s air racing pilot RoscoeTurner’s Beech dealership. Logbook #1reveals it was a working airplane thatflew several times each week. AfterHeathkit sold N1879D, it went throughseveral owners in the Midwest. Onewas a partnership of two individualsthat changed the tail number toN5050X, presumably reflecting theirrespective half shares. Sadly, theremilywas a landing gear “event” (there, but for the grace of God, go I) atMeigs Field in Chicago. Fifty X waspurchased by Dan Towery and flown(with the gear locked down we’vebeen told) to Delaware from Meigsfor repairs. Dad bought the airplanefrom Dan. I recently met Dan and hisson, also Dan, at Oshkosh. They
