This is the fifth mandated update to ICD-10-CM codes since ICD-10 codes went live on October 1, 2015.CMS and NCHS typically revise ICD-10 codes each year, which are always effective October 1. ICD-10-CM (International Classification of Diseases) codes are divided into 22 chapters and are based oncode subjects. Chapter 22 (Codes for Special Purposes, U00-U85) is new this year and only includes twocodes: vaping-related disorder (U07.0) and COVID-19 (U07.1).o Resource: ICD-10-CM 2021 Tabular List of Diseases and Injuries (PDF)2021 ICD-10-CM eye-related code changes affect Chapter 7 (Diseases of the Eye and Adnexa), Chapter 18(Symptoms, signs and abnormal clinical and laboratory findings, not elsewhere classified), Chapter 19(Injury, Poisoning and Certain Other Consequences of External Causes), Chapter 20 (External causes ofmorbidity), and Chapter 21 (Factors influencing health status and contact with health services).ICD-10-CM 2021 Code Change Task ChecklistTo avoid delays in claim processing and/or rejected or denied claims, your practice should set aside time to: Review and become familiar with the new codes. Add new codes and remove old codes in your“favorites” list in your EHR or practice managementsystem. Review plans, assessments, and outbounddocuments that were mapped from old codes to newcodes. Review and update all “code rules” you created inyour EHR and practice management software thatare affected by the new and deleted 2021 codes. Be careful when using “copy from previous” as many optometry software systems will copy over removedcodes. Make sure the primary ICD-10 codes match the primary chief complaint and reason for the visit inthe exam note.
