GAPS & HAPSSERIES000843Issue 2Aerospace Proximity SensorsDESCRIPTIONHoneywell has over 30 years’ experiencedesigning and delivering accurate andreliable proximity sensors that arecurrently used in a variety of military andcommercial aircraft.Honeywell has two new platforms ofproximity sensors: General AerospaceProximity Sensors (GAPS) and HarshAerospace Proximity Sensors (HAPS),formerly known as the IHM Series. Bothplatforms incorporate Honeywell’spatented Internal Health Monitoringfunctionality, however the productshave some technical differencesthat allow them to be used in variousaerospace applications. GAPS can beused in less harsh areas of applicationwith some differences of electrical andenvironmental characteristics whencompared to HAPS. Whilst, HAPSAerospace Proximity Sensors areconfigurable, non-contact, hermeticallysealed devices designed to sense thepresence or absence of a target in harshduty aircraft applications.The GAPS and HAPS platforms provideon/off outputs and can be configured withan optional health monitoring output tothe host system. The sensing mechanismis based on the familiar Eddy Current KilledOscillator (ECKO) principles; however,Honeywell has designed and implementedthe patented FAVCO (Fixed AmplitudeVariable Current Oscillator) technologywhich enables the Honeywell sensors tohave the health monitoring (IHM) features.See Figure 5 to compare the ECKO andFAVCO technologies. The GAPS and HAPSSeries helps to reduce downtime andmaintenance costs due to a unique circuitthat can detect any internal failures anddisplay a fault output instead of a falsepositive or false negative. For the customer,this delivers the best performance witha lower overall cost over the life of theaircraft.FEATURES Industry-leading indirect lightningand dielectric ruggedness: Meetsthe increased requirements oftoday’s composite aircraft and mostchallenging applications includinglanding gear, thrust reversers, and flightcontrols Enhanced vibration ruggedness:Capable of withstanding extremely highvibration applications Environmentally rugged: Fully hermeticpackages provide long-term reliability invery harsh environments by eliminatingthe potential for contamination ofthe sensor from the applicationenvironment. In addition, Honeywellhas developed an innovative method toenvironmentally seal wire-lead (pigtail)configurations Internal Health Monitoring Capability:Optional third output state to indicatethe health of the sensor (whetherit is healthy or failed).
