Shoplocal180great gift ideas for the holidayseason & throughout the year!Story and gift photography byThe Wicks Buildingon the north side ofBloomington’sdowntown Square.Photo by Steve Raymer72   Bloom December 2009/January 2010pamela keechthis is the fourth december that Bloom Magazine has presented a holiday shopping guide. Butthis year is different. This year we are in the midst of the worst economic crisis since the GreatDepression. As in the past, our guide includes gifts only from locally owned, independent stores. We’ve always felt that supporting Bloomington retailers was important—that the people who ownand work in these stores are vested in this community, are concerned about the environment here(schools, culture, infrastructure, the air we breathe), and care about our future. But now, in thiseconomic climate, there are even more reasons to support our own. Small local businesses arethe nation’s largest employer and provide the most new jobs. For every 100 spent in a locallyowned, independent store, 68 returns to the community; spend 100 in a national chain andonly 43 stays here; and when you buy on the Internet or from a catalogue, no money remains inBloomington. In this year’s guide, we have also included many gifts made right here in MonroeCounty, by artists, craftspeople, and manufacturers. They are wonderful Hoosier gifts, and forsure you won’t find them at the big box stores. So, I hope you enjoy reading the guide, that youfind some great gifts, and that you “shop until you drop”—right here in our town. —the editorDecember 2009/January 2010 Bloom   73
