SEPTEMBER 2, 2018 TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMECatholicism:Why Not?TodayJoin us at 11:45 inthe Parish HallIs therea need fororganizedreligion?Tom Merlo, our DRE/Youth Minister willconclude our series oftalks on Catholicism byaddressing the questionof organized religion. Many believe that anorganized religion issuperfluous given one’spersonal relationshipwith God. They claim thatthey can be spiritual, butnot religious. Tom willaddress questions like:Can we worship as anindividual? Is organizedreligion a means of powerfor its leaders? Is it arestraint on our personalfreedom?Come for an engagingtalk and a chance togrow in faith!NOTES FROM Gary Perrydore– Diaconate CandidateLLector, Acolyte, Deaconast year I wrote about my journeytoward being ordained as a permanent deacon and being instituted asa lector along with nine classmatesby the Bishop. Fr. Tom invited me toshare on the next chapter of thejourney toward ordination: beinginstituted as an Acolyte. This updatewill give additional insight into theprocess of being formally institutedas an Acolyte and how that makesone more visible within the parish. This past Tuesday, August28th, Bishop Boyea instituted myselfand nine other men of our class intothe ministry of Acolyte. Before theSecond Vatican Council, when a manwas preparing for priesthood hewould be instituted into what werecalled “minor orders” which included: acolyte, exorcist, lector, andporter. Following the Council PopePaul VI in his apostolicletter, MinisteriaQuaedam, the “minororders” were establishedas “ministries” and exorcist and porter weredropped. The documentdictated that all candidates for holy orders benow instituted as lectorsand acolytes and carryout these respectivefunctions prior toordination. These ministries have been typicallyinstituted only on those advancing toordination as priests or deaconsversus the potential of institutingother men choosing not to advance toordination. Given this, most parishesdon’t have instituted lectors andacolytes serving at Mass. However, the church allows for most of theirfunctions to be carried out by noninstituted members of the laity asaltar servers and readers as commissioned by the pastor when there isan absence of instituted lectors oracolytes. Being instituted as anacolyte means that I’m expected toserve at Mass as an acolyte leading upto ordination as a permanent deacon.Visibly this means you’ll see a manwho is a bit taller than most of ourservers, a bit fuller, has facial hairand is a little gray, serving at Mass!Ministeria Quaedam and the1983 Code of Canon Law providescontinued on inside

continued from front coverdirection and requirements for conferring theseministries and the General Instruction of the RomanMissal (GIRM) details the duties and functions theycarry out. The GIRM is very directive of the role ofacolyte but space here limits including that detail.Suffice it to say the acolyte carries out the functionswe typically see altar servers doing along with additional duties. The acolyte doesn’t replace the serversbut works in conjunction with them and during theintroductory rite, per the GIRM, typically couldcarry the cross and present the book to the priest ordeacon. For the liturgy of the Eucharist, if no deaconis present, the acolyte prepares the altar and presents the thurible to the priest assisting him as heincenses the altar, then the acolyte incenses thepriest and the people. GIRM 191 and 192 state ifExtraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion areneeded, an instituted acolyte is first to assist indistribution of Communion and may also purify thesacred vessels at the credence table following thedistribution. Lastly, Ministeria Quaedam states ascircumstances call for, an instituted acolyte mayexpose and repose the blessed sacrament forAdoration but without a blessing.Institution of acolyte is done within the Massand is conferred by a bishop. From the Rite of Institution of Acolyte, Bishop Boyea spoke the followingwords during the institution Mass:Dear sons in Christ, as people chosen for theministry of acolyte, you will have a special rolein the Church’s ministry. The summit and sourceof the Church’s life is the Eucharist, which buildsup the Christian community and makes it grow.It is your responsibility to assist priests anddeacons in carrying out their ministry, and asMON 900: Our CountryTUE 700: David EldersveldWED 830: Henry MichaelMartinoFRI 830: Peter SchlossSAT 900: OSP ReligiousEducation Program400: Nancy Fox SUN 800: Parishioners1030: Gary & Kathy Wilson1230: Most Rev.
