KANONSWIVEL JOINTSAbsolute leak-free designSwivel joints have been used in the processing industryfor a long time. The use of swivel joints in metal loading arms becamecritical because of the extraordinarily high bending andaxial load combination, due to the reach of the loadingarm and wind forces.KANON swivel joints are developed to withstand allthese loads without leaking. In fact, leakage and regularmaintenance is something which is unknown withKANON swivel joints.

SWIVELJOINTSBy using KANON swivel joints it is possibleto make all kinds of flexible connectionsusing rigid pipes instead of using hoses.KANON swivel joints are available in variousmaterials, including: Carbon Steel Low Temperature Carbon Steel Stainless Steel Carbon Steel with PTFE, rubber andother linings Hastelloy Titanium PlasticsTemperature range of -200 C up to 300 CPressure range up to 120 barSizes from 1” up to 24”831812817825822835Specific features: Swivel joints can withstand much higherloads than conventional designs due tothe special shape of the ball races incombination with relatively largediameter ball bearings The ball race chamber is completelyseparated from the sealing part The product seal can be replacedwithout removing the ball bearings Swivel joints are provided with long lifelubrication, so there is no need forregular maintenance Double or single ball racedepending on application Jacketing and trace heating option Full size bore Tell tale leakage indicatorTypes & Purposes: SAN831 Multi Purpose, up to 4” SAN812 Multi Purpose, from 6” upto 24” SAC817 for Cryogenic Purposes SRL825 for Corrosive Purposes (PTFElined execution) SRS822 for Toxic Purposes SAL835 Low Height Execution5

KANONMARINELOADINGSYSTEMSThe transfer of all fluids and liquefied gases, into thesmallest barge or the largest crude carrier may be safelyand dependably accomplished using a KANON MarineLoading Arm system. These loading systems are manufactured to the latestrequirements of OCIMF and major oil companies.KANON’s single counterweight balance system enablesboth hydraulically and manually operated arms to bemanoeuvred easily and safely, saving both time andmanpower.KANON Marine Loading Arms require minimalmaintenance and all product seals can be replacedwithout scaffolding or dismantling the loading arm itself.

MARINE LOADING ARMSCharacteristics: Sizes 4" to 24" diameter Materials: carbon, stainless and lowtemperature steels, with PTFE orrubber linings and other special alloys Temperature range –200 C to 300 CAll KANON arms, including manuallyoperated models, can be provided witha virtually non-spill Emergency ReleaseSystem. This ensures, that, in the event of anemergency, the liquid and vapour lines areboth sealed after disconnection. Once theemergency sequence commences, thearm automatically rises and returns to itsparked position, allowing for immediatedeparture of the tanker if necessary.7

KANONLOADING ARMMODELSThe MLA260 series is the most efficient range of marineloading arms on the market, due to the slim design andthe availability of a number of design options to ensurethat specific site requirements are met in the best possibleway. The MLA260 can be used with virtually all liquids andgases that are capable of being transferred throughpipes. The use of a unique double inboard arm hasresulted in the smallest design footprint possible whilstensuring that the loads encountered at the MLA260 baseplate are the lowest when compared with any other typeof arm.valveblockon eachloading arm

MARINE LOADING ARMSThe MLA260 model can be configuredwith more than one fully separated, selfsupporting product lines, which aredesigned to absorb all possible forcesassociated with structural mass, fluidweight, pressure load and wind load. The MLA272 series is specifically used forcryogenic or highly corrosive or toxicchemical service. This type of loading arm has a separatesupporting structure with floating productand/or vapour pipe. Both types of loading arms MLA260 andMLA272 consist of a symmetric construction. Full balance of these loading arms isprovided by means of a rigid pantographlink, which connects the outboard arm tothe rotating counterweight. Special carehas been given to the rotating pivots of thepantograph bar both in design and in material selection thus assuring smooth operation with minimum maintenance.MLA272MLA260 Double InboardMLA260 Double Inboard, with rigid vapour lineas part of the constructionMLA260 Double Inboard, with vapour line piggy back mountedMLA260 Double Inboard multi product9

THE AVAILABLEOPTIONS SAYEVERYTHINGABOUT OUREXPERIENCEOperation:KANON Marine Loading Arms can be operated eithermanually or hydraulically, depending on product pipesize, physical dimensions and fitted accessories.Hydraulic operation requires 2 drives for inboard andoutboard arm movement and 1 drive for slewing(rotation) movement.Operation of the hydraulic loading arm can be effectedby means of: Levers directly mounted to the valve block adjacent tothe loading arm stand post – (manual hydraulicoperation) By pushbuttons on either the operators console or onthe remote control pendant box/wireless set – (electrichydraulic operation). All KANON hydraulic and electrical control systems areinherently safe. The hydraulic circuit includes overpressure relief valves adjusted to 190 bar maximum(system pressure maximum 210 bar). Specific details ofhydraulic controls are provided in separate bulletins.

MARINE LOADING ARMS OPTIONSAccessories:Depending on customers needs, thefollowing options can be offered: Vapour return line, piggy back style Vapour return line as part of theconstruction Drain, purge, flush, product recoveryand pigging systems Quick connect/disconnect coupling Vacuum breaker Shut-off valve In-situ replacement of swivel jointproduct seals (standard provision) Isolation flange Centralised ‘Tell-Tale’ leakage indicatorsfor all swivel joints Adjustable support jack Electrical heating/tracing Steam or hot oil tracing/jacketing Thermal insulation Access ladders and maintenanceplatforms SCADA Position monitoring system available for one or several Marine Loading Arms.KANON Hydraulic QCDC/MultiSize Hydraulic QCDC Patent PendingKANON offers both manual and hydraulicQuick Connect/Disconnect Couplings. Thehydraulic version is of a simple and robustdesign, capable of capturing the matingflange even when the distance betweenthe coupling face and the flange is inexcess of 50 mm.An adapter can be fitted to the coupling toenable it to be used with mating flangesthat are one or even two sizes smaller thanthe size of the couplingEmergency ReleaseCoupling (ERC)The KANON ERC is part of the KANONrange of Emergency Safety Systems(ESS), designed to provide best possiblesafety in fluid loading/unloading whenusing Marine Loading Arms. The ERC providesa fully automatic, safe and spillage freedisconnection of the Loading Arm from theship should the limits of the safe workingenvelope of the Arm be exceeded. TheERC features a simple single cylinderdesign that provides a high level of intrinsicsafety, field-proven in many MarineLoading Arm applications. KANONEmergency Safety Systems, and specificallythe ERC, are known as ‘workhorses’ in thefluid transfer industry providing powerfulperformance with little or no maintenance.11

MAKINGTHE RIGHTCHOICEWhen deciding upon a conceptual design for road andrail tanker loading stations some basic principles need tobe considered. Top and Bottom loading each have theirown advantages, which can benefit the installation whencorrectly applied.Features and benefits of both Top and Bottom loadingarms are provided in later sections detailing theseproducts more fully. In general terms, however, the basic design data neededfor a loading station includes the following, all of whichmay not be applicable in every case.Design data may include: Type of fluid; temperature, pressureViscosity in normal/abnormal condition3Capacity in m or tonnes/hourMulti-product loadingNumber of different fluid media at one loading stationNumber of loading arms filling simultaneously at onetanker Required level of operator safety Environmental requirements; i.e. vapour return orrecovery overspill protection Integration with metering or weighbridge facilities.

TRUCK LOADING ARMSThe following is applicable irrespective ofwhether top or bottom loading, or even acombination of both is specified.A common requirements for all fluidtransfer systems is that contact with manand environment should be avoided. Thisdemands no leakages, non-spill connect/disconnect, self draining systems, lockablestored position, etc.Hundreds of user friendly and easy to operateKANON loading systems are in use todayin highly demanding applications. This brochure provides the tools to enablethe correct solution to be selected.MAIN CUSTOMERBALANCINGLoading arms should be balanced such thatminimum weight is borne by the operatorirrespective of the position of the arm.Balancing starts with the loading armdesign; forces working on one end ofthe arm are to be compensated forby traditional counterweight, or moreadvanced spring balancing, at the other. The maintenance free balance cylinder isdesigned for applications which demandless space and can be combined withhydraulic or pneumatic operation.KANON spring cylinders with multiplecompression spring packages, can beadjusted to meet changes in operatingconditions. Compared with conventionaldesigns, KANON adjustable spring cylindersexcel in terms of safety and long life.BASICCHARACTERISTICSSizes diameters: 1", 2", 3", 4" and 6".Materials: carbon steel, stainless, duplex, low temperature steel, Hasteloy, titaniumand other special alloys, and with or withoutlinings of rubber, PTFE- or other materials.Temperature range: -200 C 300 C.Pressure range: maximum 120 bar.Balancing: counterweight or spring cylinder.Seals: PTFE, viton, buna-N, perbunan andothers on request.GROUPS ChemicalPetrochemicalFood and beverageHealthcare, Toiletries andPharmaceuticals. TOPLOADINGARMSKANON top loading arms are specially designed to suitboth open filling of a wide range of products across allindustry sectors or closed filling of the type of highlyaggressive liquids associated with the chemical andpetrochemical industries.Loading arms can be manufactured for every application, and following years of experience, KANON have developed, and continue to develop, widely accepted solutions for fillingtankers. The three basic top loading styles are:1) Single Top Loading Arm2) Single Top Loading Arm with vapour return orpressure line3) Single Top Loading Arm for vapour return.Top loading arms can be providedwith various usefull accessories(as shown later in this brochure)including: Top level detection: (bubble pipe sensing or electronic)Pressdown cylinder to prevent the arm liftingDrop pipe deflectorTelescopic drop pipe (preventing foaming or electrostatic build up).

TOP LOADING ARMSWhere required, top loading arms can beprovided with heat-tracing, jacketing andinsulation.1) Single Top Loading ArmUsually equipped with four swivel joints, and with or without a cone, the standardloading arm offers great flexibility and coversthe complete range of manhole sizes asfound on most tankers. For closed fillingapplications additional swivel joints can beincluded in the drop pipe to ensure stressfree connections.TLA3412) Single Top Loading Armwith vapour return line, cone, press unit andtoplevel controlSemi-closed loading incorporating a conein combination with a vapour line, eitherhard piped to form a double top loadingarm, or flexible and piggy-back mountedon a single product arm is the more typicaldesign. This solution offers effectivevapour return whilst maintaining flexibilityfor the tanker fleet.Alternatively, fully closed loading usingsecure flanges, or specific couplings, provides a true ‘closed loop’. However, mating connections are required on boththe loading arm and tanker top dictatingthe need for a dedicated tanker fleet.TLA343Closed loop system also offers thepossibility of unloading by pressure, through the drop pipe of the product armwhilst pressurizing the tank via the ‘vapourline’ of the loading arm.TLA34015

BOTTOMLOADINGARMSThe advantage of Bottom Loading Arms is that these canbe operated at ground level without need for loadingplatforms. When using a single bottom loading arm, the vapour isusually vented through an opening at the top of the tank.Preferably, this should be capable of being opened fromground level thereby preventing the need for the operatorto access the top of the truck. This loading procedure, using a single bottom loading arm, is widely used and isreferred to as an ‘open loop’ product transfer.Increasingly, however, a combination of two bottomloading arms are used simultaneously to provide ‘closedloop’ product transfer. In this configuration, the productis filled through one Bottom loading arm whilst thevapour is recovered through a second usually having asmaller diameter than the product arm. This technique isnecessary for low density liquids (such as butane andpropane) and fluids with toxic or explosive vapours. Theclosed loop operation prevents product escaping into theatmosphere and offers the best possible operator safetywhilst minimising environmental pollution.

BOTTOM LOADING ARMSBottom unloading with a single loading armcan be achieved using a tanker surgepump or even more simply by gravity. Thelatter method may require a low-heightbottom loading station with special compactdesign swivels designed to prevent ‘airpockets’ in the product line.As with top loading arms, double bottomloading arms with suitable couplings canbe used for pressurized unloading usingthe vapour arm to pressurize the tanker. With all bottom unloading methods practicallyall product is evacuated from the tanker.Bottom loading arms are also particularlysuitable for use with electro static sensitivefluids. As with the Top loading arms, the use ofKANON balance cylinders ensures thatBottom loading arms can be manoeuvredthrough all positions with minimal effort.HorizontalBalancing SystemIn addition to the overall balancing of heBottom loading arms, KANON’s optionalhorizontal balancing system keeps theoutboard pipe horizontal in every connectingposition.BLA145Compared with systems incorporatingconventional gas struts, this uniqueparallelogram design provides true balancingof all forces, especially when the arm is fittedwith heavy valves or couplings.KANON’s ergonomic design eliminateshard physical work for the operator, reducingthe connection to a light duty, one manoperation.BLA144/14517

KANONCROSS-OVERBOTTOMLOADINGKANON cross-over bottom loading arms allowsimultaneous connecting and filling of up to sevenproduct lines with vapour return.Latterly, KANON has developed an innovative newdesign which minimises maintenance inspection andstock holding costs. All of KANON’s experience and know-how is incorporatedin the cross-over bottom loading system which conformsto A.P.I. standards, and provides increased safety andease of operation.

CROSS-OVER BOTTOM LOADINGFeatures and benefits Safeguarding environmental legislation All swivel joints are designed for easymaintenance without dismantling thecomplete loading arm Offers an extended operating area, notlimited to a single radius, by using wellbalanced double articulated horizontalbooms (no push and pull) Universal hose length reducesmaintenance and stock holding costs Compact design, can be retrospectivelyfitted in almost every existing application It is possible to operate on both sides ofthe station simultaneously without havingto dismantle the loading station Light and easy manoeuvring (no pushand pull) Leak proof design 6” flanged heavy duty base swivel jointensures easier servicing, safer loadingand longer working life The swivel incorporates special shapeddouble bearings featuring KANON’s fourcontact point races, resulting in a higherload capacity for longer and safer loading Long life lubrication Full spring cylinder balancing methoddesigned for safer operatingTop view parked positionAs standard, KANON Cross-Over bottomloading arms are provided with a springclip for retaining arms in the parkedposition. With this provision the loading arms areparked in such a way that the loadingisland is clear of trip hazards and thepotential for damage to be caused to thearms as a result of vehicle impact isminimised.Construction detailsKANON Cross-Over bottom loading armsfor filling road tankers are provided withdouble articulated boom arms. The innerarm is flanged onto the 6” heavy duty swiveljoint. This swivel joint is the base swivel jointdesigned to carry all the loads created bythe weight of the arm.The outer arm is perfectly balanced by useof the KANON adjustable spring balancecylinders which feature multiple compressionspring packages, and which can be adjustedto meet changes in operating conditions.Compared with conventional designs,KANON adjustable spring cylinders excelin terms of safety and long life.19

ACCESSORIES2Many tanker loading bays in the food industries are upgradingtheir loading cycles and rates. Therefore, loading facilities arerequired, that can cope with higher flow rates. This factor, coupled to the increasingly stringent regulations of H.A.C.C.P.,end-users and suppliers and a desire to reduce productcontamination to a minimum, has lead to the development ofthe “KANON Cleancon”, a 6” coupler for liquid and high viscosityproducts.Cleancon couplerThe KANON Cleancon Coupler is successfully in service in anincreasing number of tanker loading bays across the world, providing significant benefits in the field of increased flow ratesand reduced product contamination.4253621
