White paper IEC 60204-1(6 th edition) October 2017IntroductionEdition 6.0 comes into effectOn October 2016, IEC released the 6th edition of the IEC60204-1 standard, which is the reference for electricalsafety of machine manufacturers. This standard means to provide requirements andrecommendations involving electrical equipment, as well asto promote: Safety of persons and property. Consistency of control response. Ease of operation and maintenance.ScopeThe IEC 60204-1 is intended to be used in the followingrange of application: Within electric, electronic and programmable equipmentand systems for machines. Equipment starting at the point of connection of thesupply to the electrical equipment of the machine. Control cabinets with rated voltages up to 1000 V foralternating current (AC) and up to 1500 V for directcurrent (DC). Does not take into account all requirements that arenecessary or are required by other standards orregulations to protect persons from risks other thanelectrical hazards. Some important changesThis edition includes among other significant technicalchanges the following topics with respect to the 5th version: Applications with Power Drive Systems (PDS). Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). Short-circuit current rating of electrical equipment. Overcurrent protection and protective bonding circuit. Control circuits and control functions. Icons for actuators and control devices. Requirements for the technical documentation. National requirements, normative specifications, andliterature references.Nonetheless, the safety applications within PDS will be thefocus of this publication.Target groupThe IEC 60204-1 is aimed at the electrical equipment ofmachine design, project and manufacture.Timetable:Since when should the Edition 6.0 be adopted? This sixth edition constitutes a technical revision andcancels and replaces with some transition time the fifthedition published in 2005.The adoption in the Official Journal of the European Unionis expected on fall, 2017.A white paper issued by Siemens AG. White paper IEC 60204-1(6 th edition) October 2017Changes in the IEC 60204-1Regarding Power Drive SystemsOverviewOver the last decade, power drive systems have grownwidely inside the industrial automation, and so itsregulation. For these reasons, this publication intention is to clarify partof the changes affecting the requirements of PDS.Among these changes are featured: the safe standstill of thedrives (safe torque off), and the updates regardingovercurrent and overload protection against electric shock, which include new terminology such as the concept ofshort-circuit current rating. In addition, Edition 6.0 includes updates regarding newerror loop measurement for protection using automaticswitch-off; regulatory requirements for equipotentialbonding; and clarified methods of protection againstindirect contact.Up next, further information about two of the mostimportant changes within PDS is given.Updates concerning Safe Torque Off (STO)The STO function is a drive safety function that ensures thatno torque-generating energy can continue to act upon amotor and prevents unintentional starting. In accordance with 60204-1 section 5.4, the Safe Torque Offfunction safely clears the pulses of the drive making itreliably torque-free.Additionally, Edition 6.0 contains in section 5.3 aclarification regarding the incoming supply conductorterminations and devices for disconnecting and switchingoff, which confirms that no isolation from the network isnecessary for PDS with STO used to prevent unexpectedstart-ups. Nonetheless, in order to work on the electricalequipment, an isolating device still must be provided.A white paper issued by Siemens AG. Siemens AG 2017. All rights reserved.Family of SINAMICS power drivesUpdates regarding protection against electric shock incase of indirect contactThe protection against electric shock is intended to preventdangerous situations by enabling basic and fault protectionagainst direct or indirect contact with conductive parts.Nonetheless, Edition 6.0 contains only changes regardingindirect contact. The updated section 6.3.3 clarifies that converters shallprovide an output protection that automatically disconnectssupplied circuits (motors, motor cables, motor chokes) incase of insulation faults, so that the duration of the touchvoltage is sufficiently short. As appears in the standard 60204-1, manufacturers ofconverters that do not provide output protection arerequired to provide instructions on additional protectionmeasures.4

White paper IEC 60204-1(6 th edition) October 2017Siemens drive technologyApplication examplesIntegrated protection functionsAll SINAMICS drives provide integrated protection againstelectric shock for the supplied circuits by automaticdisconnection of the supply as shown in the standard60204-1 section 6.3.3.Furthermore, the drives provide integrated protectionfunctions for the equipment connected to the converteroutput: Overcurrent protection as per section 7.2 Overload protection as per section 7.3.2Short-circuit protective devices are required on the line sideof the drive system. For the SINAMICS drives a choice ofvalidated protective devices is available. Some of themusually included are:Safe Torque Off (STO)Our SINAMICS drives benefit from integrated STO function. The STO has the immediate effect that the drive cannotsupply any torque-generating energy. Siemens 3NA LV fusesThere is an increased risk of injury to personnel and damageto machines wherever there are rotating units. Therefore, incompliance with 602204-1, STO can be used in manyapplications to bring the drive to a standstill in a sufficientlyshort time by the load torque or friction. In compliance with 60204-1, our safety technology startingfrom the Safety Integrated input terminals of the SINAMICScomponents (control unit, motor module), and all the waythrough our cable routing methods, cable insulation, shielding and installation standards satisfy all requirements. Siemens SIRIUS 3RV2 motor starter protectors Siemens SENTRON 3VA1 circuit breakersSTO also enables safe working when the protective door isopen (restart interlock) and has a wide range of use inmachines/ systems with moving axes, e.g. handling, conveyor technology.Customer benefits: Powerful safety concepts with short response times High degree of flexibility: safety and operatingconcept can be implemented in-line with thoserequired in practice Increased cost-effectiveness: lower hardware andinstallation costs Higher availability: electromechanical switchingelements sensitive to disturbances are eliminatedA white paper issued by Siemens AG. White paper IEC 60204-1(6 th edition) October 2017Systems with Safety IntegratedSimply safe – twice the efficiencySINAMICS safety integrated reacts more quicklySafety Integrated (SI) is the safety concept that reliablymasters specific dangerous situations, such as whereverthere are rotating units (e.g. saws, rolls and spindles). It has a significantly faster response time and a higherdegree of functionality with generally unchanged andoccasionally even increased productivity.Lower costs, increased safetyWhile conventional safety technology always requiresadditional contactors, safety relays and interlocking circuits, for the integrated safety technology from Siemens, all ofthese additional electromechanical components areeliminated from the very start.A solution for safetyFor any application Safety Integrated from Siemens offersthe right solution according to IEC 60204-1. The SafetyIntegrated portfolio contains SIMATIC, SIRIUS and SINAMICScomponents which work perfectly together. And even more.As the safety-relevant signals can be transferred viastandard fieldbuses, the complexity and therefore wiringcosts are reduced. As a consequence, the high requirementsof the safety standards can be far more simplyimplemented. And not only this, as a result of the lowernumber of components, machine availability is increased. For further information visit:www.siemens.com/safety-drivesA white paper issued by Siemens AG.
